    This study presents a liquid crystal micro-Fresnel zone plate (LC-MFZP) with fine variable focusing properties. The LC-MFZPs are fabricated via photochemical processes without any mechanical process. The focusing properties are investigated through numerical simulations and experiments. LC-MFZPs can generate a focusing spot with a specific incident wavelength such that the transmitted phase difference between their adjacent ring zones is π rad. When this difference is changed by the electrical reorientation of the LCs, the focusing spot disappears because the diffraction condition is no longer satisfied. Subsequently, another focusing spot at a specific incident wavelength is generated to satisfy the diffraction condition. The positions of these focusing spots differ because the focal lengths depend on the incident wavelength. Consequently, LC-MFZPs can be used to electrically control the focal length. This study may find applications in optical manipulation and optical trapping.

    Abstract

    It is a significant issue in controlling the polarization distribution in ferroelectric nematic liquid crystal cells. We investigated the polarization configuration of ferroelectric nematic liquid crystals on the surface and in the bulk of parallel/anti-parallel cells with rubbed substrates and proposed the polarization models in each cell. It is found that on the surface of rubbed polyimide films, the polarization direction is fixed and opposite to the rubbing direction. Splay and twist distribution of the polarization are formed in parallel and anti-parallel cells, respectively.

    Abstract

    We investigated the lattice orientation behavior of cholesteric blue phase II on a stripe-patterned surface, on which the orientational easy axis of the adjacent region changes discontinuously. The lattice orientation depends on the patterned-region size when the easy axes of the adjacent patterns are orthogonal to each other. For the large regional period, the (110) lattice planes are parallel to the substrates, and the [001] axes within each region are aligned along the corresponding easy axes, whereas for a small period, owing to the orientational frustration caused by the elastic strain, the (100) planes are uniform regardless of the pattern.

    Optical vortices (OVs) with orbital angular momenta show promise for various optical applications. Spiral zone plates (SZPs) can generate a focused OV and are thus used in applications like edge-enhanced imaging. However, conventional SZPs have low diffraction efficiency because they operate based on amplitude modulation. This study proposes a liquid crystal spiral zone plate (LCSZP) that operates based on phase modulation and demonstrates the generation of a focused OV with high efficiency and electric tunability. The LCSZP has no threshold voltage owing to its homeotropic/planar hybrid alignment regions, and it can find applications in imaging, laser processing, and optical manipulation.

    Abstract

    Optical vortices (OVs), which carry orbital angular momenta are attractive for many optical applications. A facile means of generating OVs is through the use of q-plates, which are patterned liquid crystal (LC) waveplates. However, they are limited to generating beams with topological charge ±${\ell }.$ In this work, we propose a stacked LC structure consisting of patterned nematic LC with 1/4-wave retardation and planar cholesteric LC, and demonstrate its capability to generate coaxial OVs with topological charges $\left|{\ell }\right|$ and $\left|2{\ell }\right|.$ As an extension of the function of conventional q-plate, this structure provides large degree of freedom in the generating OVs.

    Authorship:Principal investigator 

    近年、厚みを持たないフラットな光学素子を実現する概念としてメタサーフェスと呼ばれる技術が注目を集めています。しかしながら、一般に半導体微細加工技術を応用したトップダウン方式で作製されるため、大面積製造や可視光の利用が困難でした。そこで本研究では、液晶の自己組織性を利用したボトムアップ方式により大口径な光学素子を実現します。さらに、液晶の外場応答性を最大限活用することで動的な光波面制御を実現します。
