    To obtain fundamental information on the washing feeling and the cleaning performance of washcloths, we surveyed the washing feeling using five kinds of washcloth on market in Japan, which were made of cotton, ramie, silk, regular synthetic fiber (nylon/polyester), and microfiber (nylon/polyester). Further, we selected the regular and microfiber washcloths for further study due to remarkable differences in washing feeling between them. We examined the performance of both types washcloth on cleaning a felt-tip-pen mark from human skin, their effect on stratum corneum, and made physical measurements of the contact state between them and human skin, etc. It was found that the regular washcloth had a poor cleaning effect, though it had a good washing feeling. On the contrary, the micorifiber washcloth had a good cleaning effect, though it had a bad washing feeling. © 2006 The Textile Machinery Society of Japan.

    This study has two final goals. The one is to obtain some practical and fundamental guides to designing cosmetic powder puffs made of synthetic-fiber cloths which have superior intake abilities, including micro-fiber puffs. The other is to confirm whether micro-fiber powder puffs have good intake ability or not. Some measurements were conducted using five kinds of synthetic-fiber puffs, each with different fiber diameters and pile lengths, and one kind of cotton puff currently on the market in Japan. The measurements included the intake weight of powder, observation of puffs coming in contact with powder, the weight of powder retained on a fiber, SEM photographs of powder retention, <I>etc</I>. It was concluded that important factors in designing superior synthetic-fiber puffs are fiber diameter, pile length and space between fibers. Micro-fiber puffs used in this study had not good intake ability.

    To obtain fundamental information for designing micro-fiber kitchen wiping cloth with a superior liquid wiping performance, the authors studied the liquid wiping performance of three different prototypes of micro-fiber kitchen wiping cloth. Each cloth was tested against the liquid samples of water, soy sauce and Worcester sauce. Each cloth differed in fiber diameter, yarn density and thickness, etc. A cotton kitchen cloth on the market in Japan was used as a control sample. A vertical wiping method and a horizontal wiping method were used to test the cloth against the liquid samples. The results showed that each micro-fiber cloth easily absorbed water and soy sauce, especially along the yarn axes and when both the vertical and horizontal wiping methods were used. However, when each type of micro-fiber cloth was tested against Worcester sauce sample, the sauce was not easily absorbed and most of sauce was left smeared on the surface. The horizontal wiping method was particularly unsuitable for wiping Worcester sauce. The authors suggested that design of micro-fiber kitchen wiping cloth should be guided by an adequate parameters of thickness and surface roughness.

    This study aims to clarify experimentally shadow effect of shadow-type pantyhose available on the market in Japan. The pantyhose used for our experiments are those of beige color with a shadow color part, whose center of both sides is deeper beige than other part. The shadow aims to present legs of wearers thinner, straight and more aesthetically.     To obtain fundamental data for designing lateral striped patterns of equal width and two-color com-bination for women's legwear such as pantyhose and tights, we studied the effect of the stripe width. color, and leg shape on the visual impression of the legwear using three-dimensional images. The images were magnified to a life-size on a screen using a projector. and then, an evaluation of the visual impression was conducted by a semantic differential method using Japanese female undergraduates as evaluators. The legwear with narrower white-black stripes made the leg appearance relatively thinner, longer and more aesthetically appealing than that with wider stripes does. The two-color combinations gave specific visual impressions such as a loud and strong impression and a mild and moderate one. Aesthetically shaped legs wearing laterally-striped patterns gave a good visual impression, while non-aesthetically shaped legs did not. Some appropriate coordinates for white-black laterally-striped legwear were found.

    We investigated the relationship between aesthetics and leg shape using Japanese female undergraduates from the viewpoint of the measurement of leg dimension using leg images, the statistical classification of leg shape, and the visual impression survey of subject's legs. Leg shape was classified into an aesthetic leg group and an ordinary leg group, and both were further classified into three sub-groups. Based on the analysis of these groups, the concept of aesthetic leg was defined, and an empirical f ormula for estimating leg aesthetics objectively and numerically was derived.

    To identify important factors for designing clothing shop windows, we have compared clothing shop windows in Kansai district, Japan to those in Italy. Photographs of windows have been used for samples. The photographs had been taken in several cities in Kansai district including Osaka, Kyoto and Kobe as well as in several Italian cities, i.e., Milano, Verona, Venezia, Firenze and Roma between March and May in 2001. Types of construction and forms of the shop windows have been classified and displayed items have been compared. Subjective evaluation have been conducted with the semantic differential method by female undergraduates as evaluators. The following results have been obtained.<BR>Clothing, supplementary items, inter-environmental items, construction type, purpose and exhibi-tion form have been included in an important factor. Especially, many Italian clothing shop windows have a brand-oriented image as the purpose factor, while many shop windows in Kansai district, Japan have a sales-oriented image.
