本年度は新型コロナウイルス感染症の影響により、海外での史料調査が実施できなかった。そのためまずWoodward, E.L. and Butler, R. (eds.), Documents on British Foreign Policy 1919-1939, First Series, 27 vols.(London: HMSO, 1947-1986) などの公刊史料を中心に1920年代のイギリス外交に関する史料の分析に従事した。その結果、特に1920年代の日英協調について、イギリスの政策決定者が中国大陸のみならず、インドや東南アジア、太平洋地域におけるイギリス帝国の利益の防衛という観点から考慮していたことが明らかになった。これは日英協調の成否が中国大陸における日英両国の利害の一致または不一致という観点だけでは説明できないことを意味しているとも考えられ、この点をさらに精緻に立証するためにイギリスの政治家や外交官の未公刊の私文書に焦点を当てた史料調査の実施が必要になった。
その後、1920年代のイギリス外交と日英協調において重要な役割を果たしたイギリスの政治家であるオースティン・チェンバレンの私文書が慶應義塾大学三田メディアセンターにマイクロフィルムとして所蔵されているため、史料調査の計画を立てた。新型コロナウイルス感染症対策により学外への出張が制限されたためこの史料調査は実施できなかったものの、計画策定の過程で、オースティン・チェンバレンおよびその他のイギリスの政策決定者の対日政策に対する構想への理解を深めることができた。 -
