    Pauferrol A (1), a unique chalcone derivative was isolated from the stems of Caesalpinia ferrea Mart, and the structure was determined on the basis of 2D-NMR spectroscopy to be a chalcone trimer fused by a cyclobutane ring. This new chalcone trimer showed potent inhibitory activity against human topoisomerase II, with an IC50 value of 2.1 mu M, and cell proliferation inhibitory activity through the induction of apoptosis in human leukemia HL60 cells, with an IC50 value of 5.2 mu M. To our knowledge, this is the first report of the isolation and structure of this chalcone trimer and its biological activity. (C) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

    The crystal structure for one of crystal modifications of the title compound (taa) has been determined by X-ray diffraction at room temperature. The crystal system is monoclinic with a space group of P2(1)/a a = 14.926(2), b = 5.2342(8), c = 19.570(2) Angstrom, beta = 112.195(7)degrees Z = 4. The final R factor is 0.033 for 1443 observed reflections to 270 variables. The crystals recrystallized from xylene have been proven to be a different crystal modification from those obtained by vacuum sublimation at 250 degrees C. In the present crystal, two independent molecules are located on the crystallographic centres of symmetry. Each of them shows positional disorder at the amino hydrogen atoms. This modification does not exhibit the alternation of the bond lengths in the 1,3-propanediiminato linkage beyond the limit of Delta I < 3 sigma(I), which is the case for a previously reported crystal modification. These findings lend support to dynamic imine-enamine tautomerization rather than static disorder. The difference Fourier map suggests a double-minimum potential for tbe proton tautomerism. Rapid tautomerization in [H-2(8)]toluene solution can be observed by H-1 NMR spectroscopy down to -90 degrees C, just above the melting point of the solvent.

    The first 7, 10-Dithiafluoroanthene has been prepared from acenaphthenone in three steps, via ring expansion reaction of acenaphthenone ethylenedithioacetal. It was shown to be good pi-donor and form highly conducting cation radical salts with PF6-. X-ray crystallographic analysis of the salt showed columnar stack structure of donors and the salt showed high electrical conductivity at room temperature.

    A novel 2,3,8,9-tetrahydro-1,4,7,10-tetrathiachrysene (7) was conveniently prepared by dithioacetalization of 1,5-decalinedione with 1,2-ethanedithiol followed by ring expansion and aromatization on treatment with tellurium tetrachloride. Electrocrystallization by anodic oxidation of 7 in the presence of suitable electrolytes gave the radical cation salts, (7)2ClO4 or (7)2BF4 with a considerable high electrical conductivity (0.4-12 Scm-1) and good thermal stability. Single crystal X-ray analyses revealed a segregated stack structure for 7 and anions in these salts.
