    Abstract

The superfamily Dryopoidea is a diverse group of beetles with a mixture of aquatic, semiaquatic, and terrestrial life histories. These beetles exhibit remarkable morphological diversity, particularly in the larval stages, which is likely associated with their repeated adaptation to aquatic habitats. The phylogenetic relationships among Dryopoidea families and subfamilies are controversial, as phylogenetic analyses based on morphology have failed to propose robust and consistent hypotheses. However, recent molecular phylogenetic studies have provided better resolution for the interfamilial relationships and suggested the non-monophyly of a few families. In this study, we conducted phylogenetic analyses of Dryopoidea obtained in Japan along with other groups in the Elateriformia (Byrrhoidea, Dascilloidea, Buprestoidea, and Elateroidea) using sequence data from ultraconserved elements with the maximum-likelihood method and species-tree analysis based on a multispecies coalescent model. Our results show that Dryopoidea is a monophyletic group, not sister to Byrrhoidea. In Dryopoidea, Dryopidae is sister to all other groups, and Psephenidae and Ptilodactylidae are not monophyletic groups. In Psephenidae, Eubrianacinae has clearly diverged from the other subfamilies (Psepheninae, Psephenoidinae, and Eubriinae) and is closely related to Callirhipidae; in Ptilodactylidae, Cladotominae is related to Psephenidae (except Eubrianacinae) + Chelonariidae and separated from the other Ptilodactylidae subfamilies (Anchytarsinae and Ptilodactylinae). Although ML analyses indicated paraphyly of subfamilies in Limnichidae and Psephenidae (except Eubrianacinae), this was resolved in species tree analysis. Our results show that Eubrianacinae and Cladotominae are clearly distinct groups with different origins from other subfamilies of the respective families and can be separated as independent families.

Japanese species of the genus Georissus are revised. Seven species, including two new, G. (Neogeorissus) takahashii sp. nov. and G. (Ne.) satoi sp. nov. are recognized. Georissus (Neogeorissus) sakaii Sat??, 1972 and G. (Ne.) katsuoi Nakane, 1995 are synonymized with G. (Ne.) japonicus Sat??, 1972. Based on the type series and additional specimens, three subgenera and seven species are (re) described with SEM micrographs of the external morphology and figures of male and female genitalia. The terminology of some structures of the head and the pronotum are redefined for convenience of taxonomy. A key to the Japanese species is also given.

The elmid beetle Orientelmis parvula (Nomura & Baba, 1961) is a rare and endangered species in Japan. Mouth parts and genitalia in adults of both sexes and larval morphology are described based on scanning electron microscope observations. The larva of the genus Orientelmis Shepard, 1998 is described for the first time. The systematic position of the genus is discussed based on the morphology and a phylogenetic tree inferred from the mitochondrial COI, and nuclear ArgK and 18S gene sequences. A new key for larvae of known species and genera of Japanese Elmidae is given.

Chilarboreus is a small genus comprising three species occurring in Nothofagus forests of Chile. The female of a single species, Chilarboreus fossulatus, was described in the original description. In the present paper we provide descriptions of females of the remaining two species for the first time. Morphology of females supports the previous division of Chilarboreus into two subgenera. Pronotal excitators are described and illustrated for the first time in Scirtidae.

Japanese species of the genus Intybia are revised taxonomically, with the examination of the endophallic structure. Eight species, including one new species Intybia donan sp. nov. from Yonaguni-jima, are recognized. All species are described or redescribed with a key and figures. The endophallic structure contains one primary sclerite (gonoporal piece), three secondary sclerites (ligula, semigonoporal piece, and spinous plate) in some species, and a membranous basal area densely covered with many spines (spinous area). Based on the structures of the endophallus, the Japanese members of the genus are divided into two species groups (the histrio and pelegrini groups). The pelegrini species group is furthermore subdivided into three subgroups (subgroups 1-3). New distributional records are as follows: I. histrio from Hachijo-jima and Tanega-shima; I. niponica from Sakhalin and I. takaraensis from Tokuno-shima and Amami-Oshima.

Periphyllus acerihabitans Zhang, 1982, associated with Acer buergerianum, is known only from the original description from China. Based on the type series and specimens collected in Japan, we re-describe apterous and alate viviparous females of P. acerihabitans and describe dimorph (aestivating nymph) and oviparous female in detail with illustrations. This is the first record of this species from Japan. The differences between P. acerihabitans and a related species P. viridis (Matsumura, 1919) are discussed. Keys to similar species: P. acerihabitans, P. viridis and P. californiensis (Shinji, 1917), associated with A. buergerianum or A. pictum subsp. mono, are provided.

The endophallic structure of the genus Laius is studied and discussed based on the examination of 19 species from Asia to the Indian Ocean. The structure contains two primary sclerites (named gonoporal piece and ligula), a secondary sclerite on the basal part of the gonoporal piece (named additional sclerite) in some species, and a membranous basal area closely covered with many spines (named spinous area). Five species groups are recognized based on the morphology of the endophallic sclerites. The sympatric species have different body sizes and quite distinguishable endophallic sclerites (= different species group), while the allopatric species have overlapping body sizes and similar endophallic sclerites (= same species group). Three new species are described and six previously known species are redescribed with endophallic sclerites, and the descriptions of endophallic sclerites of the remaining ten species are added. The larva of Laius rodriguesensis sp. nov. is also described. The genus Nossibeus Evers, 1994 is synonymised with Laius Guerin-Meneville, 1830.

Morphology of larvae, pupae, adult female and male genitalia of Doubledaya sinuata Zia, 1934 (Coleoptera: Erotylidae: Languriinae) are described. The adults were found to be sexually dimorphic in external morphology, particularly in the shape of the head and mandibles: females have a large asymmetric head and mandibles; males have a symmetrical head with slightly asymmetric mandibles. Adult females of D. sinuata excavate holes with their mandibles on intermediate-sized internodes of recently dead culms of the bamboo Sinobambusa sat (Balansa) C. S. Chao & Renvoize, in order to deposit eggs on their inner surface. Larvae of D. sinuata consume tissues of the bamboo and complete the development within the internode. Significance of the asymmetric head and mandibular morphologies, oviposition preference and feeding habits of D. sinuata are discussed.

The subfamily Horelophopsinae was originally proposed as one of the earliest diverging clades of Hydrophilidae (s.s.), but its phylogenetic placement has never been tested. We describe the larva of Horelophopsis hanseniSato et Yoshitomi, 2004 of the Horelophopsinae. Larval data are based on larval specimens collected together with adults, and unambiguously associated with them by means of DNA barcoding. We perform an analysis testing the phylogenetic position of H.hanseni based on larval and adult morphological characters. Horelophopsis hanseni is unambiguously placed within the hydrophilid subfamily Hydrophilinae and its close relationships to the genus AgraphydrusRegimbart, 1903 (Hydrophilinae, Acidocerini) is recognized. The results suggest that the subfamily Horelophopsinae is unlikely to be a basal taxon of Hydrophilidae, as originally suggested.

Application Specific Instruction-set Processors (ASIPs) expose to the designer a large number of degrees of freedom. Accurate and rapid simulation tools are needed to explore the design space. To this aim, FPGA-based emulators have recently been proposed as an alternative to pure software cycle-accurate simulator. However, the advantages of on-hardware emulation are reduced by the overhead of the RTL synthesis process that needs to be run for each configuration to be emulated. The work presented in this paper aims at mitigating this overhead, exploiting a form of software-driven platform runtime reconfiguration. We present a complete emulation toolchain that, given a set of candidate ASIP configurations, identifies and builds an overdimensioned architecture capable of being reconfigured via software at runtime, emulating all the design space points under evaluation. The approach has been validated against two different case studies, a filtering kernel and an M-JPEG encoding kernel. Moreover, the presented emulation toolchain couples FPGA emulation with activity-based physical modeling to extract area and power/energy consumption figures. We show how the adoption of the presented toolchain reduces significantly the design space exploration time, while introducing an overhead lower than 10% for the FPGA resources and lower than 0.5% in terms of operating frequency. © Copyright 2012 Hiroyuki Yoshitomi.

The genus Stenocyphon Lawrence, 2001 was described from central Chile to accommodate a single new species, S. sasajii Lawrence, 2001. The genus shows features unusual for Scirtidae, including tibia without longitudinal carinae, distinct frontoclypeal suture, laterally compressed male aedeagus, laterally compressed, vertically arranged coxites of ovipositor, and very elongate habitus. This led Lawrence and Yoshitomi (2007) to place it in a new monotypic subfamily, Stenocyphoninae. The recent discovery of Stenocyphon in New Zealand greatly extends the known geographical range of the genus and subfamily. The initial discovery of the New Zealand species was made about 8 years ago, when one of us (ST) was examining unsorted beetles in the Auckland Museum collection, and found a single specimen from Northland of a beetle that was difficult to place to family. Further investigation led to the suggestion that it may be an odd scirtid, and John Lawrence subsequently determined it to belong to the genus Stenocyphon. Unfortunately, the specimen was destroyed in the post while on return from Lawrence, and no further material was located until early 2011, when ST was examining some unsorted samples collected by Dave Seldon (University of Auckland), again from Northland.

The female penis, which is protrudable and inserted into the male vagina-like cavity during copulation to receive semen, is thought to have evolved independently twice in the tribe Sensitibillini, once in the Brazilian Neotrogla and once in the African Afrotrogla. This strongly suggests that there are some factors unique to Sensitibillini that have facilitated female penis evolution. The female-female competition for nutritious semen, the oligotrophic environment, and the twin insemination slots with switching valve are considered to be the driving factors for female penis evolution. Additionally, the following factors are considered responsible for relaxing the constraint against female penis evolution: pre-existence of the female-above mating position, the elongated duct connecting the female pre-penis with the sperm storage organ, and the small male genital cavity accepting the female genital tubercle bearing the opening of this duct.

In the cultivation experiment site in the sago palm research base, We continue to research Morphological Leaf Growth for selecting excellent seedlings. Moreover, in order to respond to the request of a large number of seedlings from a local government in Luwu and a company engaged in greening project, we are starting to produce seedlings from seeds. Production of these seedlings from seeds was started by installing three towers (made by bamboo) for growing observation of seven sago palms at the flowering stage, with investigation of flowering and fruiting results. These results will be announced at the Sago palm conference to be held in June this year.

Beetle fauna of the Izu Islands, Tokyo, Japan was intensively surveyed mainly focused on the following minor interest but ecologically important taxa: weevils (Curculionoidea), rove beetles (Staphylinidae, especially Omallinae and Pselaphinae), and water beetles. Endemic beetle taxa to the islands and regarded to be relict was also studied based on the molecular phylogenetic analysis. As the results, two of them (Lucanidae) are considered to be derived rather recently from the sister taxon occurring neighboring area. And, the third one (Curculionidae) was unexpectedly regarded to be an introduced species due to the unnatural habitat, which is restricted to the plantation forests of coniferous trees.
Lastly, Mikurajima Island might become a candidate's area of one of the biodiversity hotspots within the Izu Islands from the viewpoint of beetle fauna. Toshima Island located on the northern Izu Islands was also regarded as an important area among the islands.

The insect fauna on agroecosystem and its surroundings was investigated in highlands of both Vietnam and Laos. The number of species and individuals in any kind of insects (phytophagous, parasitic, flower-visiting, xylophagous, aquatic) including pests and natural enemies was much higher in pesticide-free agroecosystem than in that with use of pesticides. In particular, the number greatly increased in pesticide-free agroecosystem surrounded or faced by extensive primary to secondary forests, compared with that with plantation or without forests. Since a number of new and newly recorded species were found during the investigation, these regions with rich agroecosystem are estimated to keep invaluable insect resources. However, inventory of the insect fauna has been just started.
