In this paper, we report ecological and environmental investigations on Pteris vittata in the As-Pb-Hg-polluted Bone River area, Gorontalo Province, Indonesia. The density distribution of P. vittata decreases from around the artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) site to the lower reaches of the Bone River, and it is rarely found near Gorontalo City. The maximum concentrations of As, Hg, and Pb recorded in the soil samples were 401, 36, and 159 mg kg-1, respectively, with their maximum concentrations in P. vittata recorded as 17,700, 5.2, and 39 mg kg-1, respectively. Around the ASGM sites, the concentrations of As, Pb, and Hg in P. vittata were highest in the study area. These data suggest that P. vittata, a hyperaccumulator of As, may be useful as a bioindicator for assessing environmental pollution by Pb and Hg.

The Shoubu volcanic ash is intercalated with the middle Pleistocene Iyoki Formation, western Shikoku, Japan. The ash has been petrographically correlated with several widespread tephras, but detailed geochemical correlations have yet to be made. We therefore examine the lithology, petrography, glass geochemistry, and fission-track (FT) ages of the Shoubu ash in an attempt to establish robust, detailed correlations. The petrography and chemical composition of glass show vertical trends in the Shoubu ash. The FT age of the lowest unit indicates that eruptions began at 0.53±0.12Ma. Although the Shoubu ash has previously been interpreted as a single, homogeneous volcanic ash, the results indicate that it either comprises several volcanic ashes or records a compositional change within a single eruptive sequence.

The source mantle of the basaltic ocean crust on the western half of the Pacific Plate was examined using Pb-Nd-Hf isotopes. The results showed that the subducted Izanagi-Pacific Ridge (IPR) formed from both Pacific (180-similar to 80 Ma) and Indian (similar to 80-70 Ma) mantles. The western Pacific Plate becomes younger westward and is thought to have formed from the IPR. The ridge was subducted along the Kurile-Japan-Nankai-Ryukyu (KJNR) Trench at 60-55 Ma and leading edge of the Pacific Plate is currently stagnated in the mantle transition zone. Conversely, the entire eastern half of the Pacific Plate, formed from isotopically distinct Pacific mantle along the East Pacific Rise and the Juan de Fuca Ridge, largely remains on the seafloor. The subducted IPR is inaccessible; therefore, questions regarding which mantle might be responsible for the formation of the western half of the Pacific Plate remain controversial. Knowing the source of the IPR basalts provides insight into the Indian-Pacific mantle boundary before the Cenozoic. Isotopic compositions of the basalts from borehole cores (165-130 Ma) in the western Pacific show that the surface oceanic crust is of Pacific mantle origin. However, the accreted ocean floor basalts (similar to 80-70 Ma) in the accretionary prism along the KJNR Trench have Indian mantle signatures. This indicates the younger western Pacific Plate of IPR origin formed partly from Indian mantle and that the Indian-Pacific mantle boundary has been stationary in the western Pacific at least since the Cretaceous.

Soil in the Fukushima area has been polluted with the radioactive contaminants such as Cs by the accident of Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant in March 2011. Remediation of soil contaminated with radioactive Cs remains one of the most important problems. Phytoremediation is an environmental remediation technique that takes advantage of plant physiology and metabolism to remove radioactive contaminants. Eleocharis acicularis is well known as heavy metal hyperaccumulator aquatic plant and expected as the strong candidate for application to Phytoremediation of polluted water and soil. In this study, a laboratory experiment was carried out to investigate the potential of E. acicularis for Phytoremediation of radioactive Cs contaminated site. The plants were grown hydroponically and placed in solutions containing Cs and K at different concentration (Cs concentration: 5 mg/L, K concentration: 0, 0.2, 2, 5, 50, 100 mg/L) in a period of 21days. In the experimental results, the highest concentration of Cs was 1560 mg/kg-DW in E. acicularis after 21 days. The concentration of Cs in plants decreased with the increasing initial concentration of K in the solution. This results indicate that E. acicularis has the ability to accumulate radioactive Cs from radioactive Cs contaminated soil and water, making it a good candidate species for radioactive Cs Phytoremediation.

A new Japanese course of study was implemented in 2011. One important change to the course of study was the increase in the contact hours for elementary science from 350 hours to 405 hours. New observation activities and experiments were also introduced into the new elementary science course. The purpose of this research was to develop a special pre-service teacher training program for elementary science teaching guided by the new course of study and to investigate the effectiveness of the program for elementary teachers in training. The training program consisted of 26 university hours which included observation activities and experiments covering most of the content in the new course of study. A total of 800 teachers in training from various departments and colleges at Ehime University participated through the academic year 2011-2012. The results showed that the participants acquired basic scientific knowledge and competency in observation activities and experiments through the program. Although the program was a non-credit subject the teachers who actively participated in at least 70% of the list of activities were given certificates of completion. The successful outcome of the program shows the importance of improving and maintaining a high quality of pre-service teacher training program for elementary science teaching.

A reactive flow geochemical model based on pMELTS thermodynamic calculations explains the observed modal, major, and trace element variations in the Red Hills peridotite, New Zealand. The model also reproduces the major and trace element chemical variations in mid-ocean ridge basalts (MORB) observed in present-day spreading ridges. The Red Hills peridotite is thought to originate from palaeo-MOR magmatic processes in the mantle-Moho transition zone. The peridotite body consists of a harzburgite matrix and dunite channels. The harzburgite forms the Lower Unit and is intruded by replacive dunite channels in the Upper Unit. This lithology gradually turns into a massive dunite zone in which disseminated to lenticular clinopyroxene aggregates are present. The rare earth element (REE) abundances in the peridotite samples vary greatly depending on their lithologies. In the Lower Unit, REE are extremely depleted, whereas in the Upper Unit they are relatively enriched, in contradiction to the depleted lithologies. Our model consists of two stages. The first stage assumes melting of depleted MORB source mantle in the garnet stability field, and the second assumes reactions between residual solids and the melts from the first stage in the spinel stability field in an open system. The model explains the formation of depleted harzburgite and the formation of dunite channels in the harzburgite matrix well. The major and trace element compositions of the melts calculated by the model vary from ultra-depleted MOR melts in harzburgite to normal MORB in dunite, suggesting that these lithologies are residues of a palaeo-MOR. The model also explains the origins of the local and global geochemical trends observed in MORB and the geochemical variation in abyssal peridotite samples. Our model confirms the important role of reactive flow in the mantle-Moho transition zone beneath MORs.

Seven trace elements (As, Cr, Ga, Pb, S, Th and V) compositions of granitic rocks in Awaji Island were analyzed using X-ray fluorescence spectrometer at Fukuoka University. Rare earth elements (REE) compositions of some samples of the Granitic Rocks II and III from the island were also determined by instrumental neutron activation analysis at Ehime University. The variation trends of most trace elements of Granitic Rocks I, II and III overlap in Harker's diagrams. Samples, which were off main trend of major and trace elements in Harker's diagrams in previous analyses (Yuhara et al., 1998), are often off the variation trends of these trace elements in this study as well. Therefore, these trace elements are also useful for investigation of chemical variations of granitic rocks. Chondrite-normalized REE patterns are enriched in LREE and flat in HREE, and fit in those of granitic rocks in the Ryoke metamorphic belt.

Phytoremediation is an environmental remediation technique that takes advantage of plant physiology and metabolism. The unique property of heavy metal hyperaccumulation by the macrophyte Eleocharis acicularis is of great significance in the phytoremediation of water and sediments contaminated by heavy metals at mine sites. In this study, a field cultivation experiment was performed to examine the applicability of E. acicularis to the remediation of water contaminated by heavy metals. The highest concentrations of heavy metals in the shoots of E. acicularis were 20 200 mg Cu/kg, 14 200 mg Zn/kg, 1740 mg As/kg, 894 mg Pb/kg, and 239 mg Cd/kg. The concentrations of Cu, Zn, As, Cd, and Pb in the shoots correlate with their concentrations in the soil in a log-linear fashion. The bioconcentration factor for these elements decreases log-linearly with increasing concentration in the soil. The results indicate the ability of E. acicularis to hyperaccumulate Cu, Zn, As, and Cd under natural conditions, making it a good candidate species for the phytoremediation of water contaminated by heavy metals.

This study was conducted to evaluate the phytoremediation and phytomining potential of 10 plant species growing naturally at one of the largest lead-zinc mines in Northern Vietnam. Total concentrations of heavy metals and arsenic were determined in the plant and in associated soil and water in and outside of the mine area. The results indicate that hyperaccumulation levels (mg kg(-1) dry weight) were obtained in Houttuynia cordata Thunb. (1140) and Pteris vittata L (3750) for arsenic, and in Ageratum houstonianum Mill. (1130), Potamogeton oxyphyllus Miq. (4210), and P. vittata (1020) for lead. To the best of our knowledge, the present paper is the first report on metal accumulation and hyperaccumulation by H. cordata, A. houstonianum, and P. oxyphyllus. Based on the obtained concentrations of metals, bioconcentration and translocation factors, as well as the biomass of these plants, the two latter species and P. vittata are good candidates for phytoremediation of sites contaminated with arsenic and multi-metals. None of the collected plants was suitable for phytomining, given their low concentrations of useful metals (e.g., silver, gallium, and indium). (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The Hirano volcanic ash in Nomura Town, southwestern Shikoku, Japan, has been characterized by petrography, refractive index and geochemical composition of volcanic glass (major and trace elements), and fission-track age of zircon. The Hirano volcanic ash has abundant vesicular glass shards and phenocrysts of biotite, hornblende and orthopyroxene. The volcanic glass has a rhyolitic composition. LREE (Light Rare Earth Element) profiles of the volcanic glass are steep with La/Sm_N=5.0-5.3 and those of HREE (Heavy Rare Earth Element) are flat with Gd/Yb_N=1.2-1.3. They have a weakly developed Eu anomaly. The Hirano volcanic ash has similar values of some incompatible trace element ratios, such as La/Y, Ba/La and Nb/Zr, with the Yufugawa pyroclastic flow deposit in the Ooita Prefecture. The fission-track age of 0.46±0.09Ma (1σ) was obtained for zircons from the Hirano volcanic ash. The Hirano volcanic ash can be correlated to the Yufugawa pyroclastic flow deposit based on petrographical, geochemical and geochronological data.

Sb, As, Cu, and Zn toxicity and contamination have become a growing concern in recent years. Phytoremediation, a plant based and cost effective technology, may be an effective approach in the cleanup of water contaminated by these metals. In this study, the aquatic macrophyte Eleocharis acicularis was used in laboratory and field experiments to assess its capability to accumulate Sb, As, Cu, and Zn, and thereby investigate its potential application in phytoremediation. The results showed that E. acicularis adapted well to water contaminated by these metals. The removal rates of Sb, As, Cu, and Zn in the laboratory experiment were 3.04, 2.75, 0.417, and 1.49 mu g/L/day, respectively. The highest concentrations of these metals accumulated in E. acicularis after 10 days of the laboratory experiment were 6.29, 6.44, 20.5, and 73.5 mg/kg dry weight, respectively. Only 8% of As, 12% of Sb, 87% of Cu and 93% of Zn removed from the water were used by E. acicularis. The highest concentrations of Sb, As, Cu, and Zn accumulated in E. acicularis after 10 wk of the field experiment were 76.0, 22.4, 33.9, and 266 mg/kg dry weight, respectively. The results indicate that E. acicularis has the ability to accumulate Sb, As, Cu, and Zn from contaminated water.

Phytoremediation, a plant-based and cost-effective technology for the cleanup of contaminated soil and water, is receiving increasing attention. In this study, the aquatic macrophyte Eleocharis acicularis was examined for its ability to take up multiple heavy metals and its potential application for phytoremediation at an abandoned mining area in Hokkaido, Japan. Elemental concentrations were measured in samples of F. acicularis, water, and soil collected from areas of mine tailing and drainage. The results reveal that Pb, Fe, Cr, Cu, Ni, and Mn accumulation in the plants increased over the course of the experiment, exceeding their initial concentrations by factors of 930, 430, 60, 25, 10, and 6, respectively. The highest concentrations of Fe, Pb, Zn, Ni, Cr, Cu, and Ni within the plants were 59500, 1120, 964, 388, 265, 235, and 47.4 mg/kg dry wt., respectively, for plants growing in mine drainage after 11 months of the experiment. These results indicate that E. acicularis is a hyperaccumulator of Pb. We also found high Si concentrations in E. acicularis (2.08%). It is likely that heavy metals exist in opal-A within cells of the plant. The bioconcentration factors (BCF; ratio of metal concentration in the plant shoots to that in the soil) obtained for Cr, Cu, Zn, Ni, Mn, and Pb were 3.27, 1.65, 1.29, 1.26, 1.11, and 0.82, respectively. The existence of heavy metals as sulphides is thought to have restricted the metal-uptake efficiency of E. acicularis at the mine site. The results of this study indicate that E. acicularis shows great potential in the phytoremediation of mine tailing and drainage rich in heavy metals.

The Red Hills peridotite in the Dun Mountain ophiolite of South Island, New Zealand, is assumed to have been produced in a paleo-mid-ocean ridge tectonic setting. The peridotite is composed mostly of harzburgite and dunite, which represent residual mantle and the Moho transition zone (MTZ), respectively. Dunite channels within harzburgite blocks of various scales represent the MTZ component. Plagioclase- and clinopyroxene-bearing dunites occur sporadically within common dunites. These dunites represent products of melt-wall-rock interaction. Chondrite-normalized rare earth element (REE) patterns of MTZ clinopyroxenes show a wide compositional range. Clinopyroxenes in plagioclase dunites are extremely depleted in light REE (LREE) ([Lu/La](N) > 100), and are comparable with clinopyroxenes in abyssal peridotites from normal mid-ocean ridges. Interstitial clinopyroxenes in the common dunite have flatter patterns ([Lu/La](N) similar to 2) comparable with those for dunite in the Oman ophiolite. Clinopyroxenes in the lower part of the residual mantle harzburgites are even more strongly depleted in LREE ([Lu/La](N) = 100-1000) than are mid-ocean ridge peridotites, and rival the most depleted abyssal clinopyroxenes reported from the Bouvet hotspot. In contrast, those in the uppermost residual mantle harzburgite and harzburgite blocks in the MTZ are less LREE depleted ([Lu/La](N) = 10-100), and are similar to those in plagioclase dunite. Clinopyroxenes in the clinopyroxene dunite in the MTZ are similar to those reported from mid-ocean ridge basalt (MORB) cumulates, and clinopyroxenes in the gabbroic rocks have compositions similar to those reported from MORB. Strong LREE and middle REE (MREE) depletion in clinopyroxenes in the harzburgite suggests that the harzburgites are residues of two-stage fractional melting, which operated initially in the garnet field, and subsequently continued in the spinel lherzolite field. The early stage melting produced the depleted harzburgite. The later stage melting was responsible for the gabbroic rocks and dunite. Strongly LREE-MREE-depleted clinopyroxene in the lower harzburgite and HREE-enriched clinopyroxene in the upper harzburgite and plagioclase dunite were formed by later reactive melt migration occurring in the harzburgite.

The sporophyte of the fern Pteris vittata is known to be a hyperaccumulator of arsenic in its fronds to>2.3% of its dry weight. However, very little has been stated about hyperaccumulation of arsenic by gametophytes of P. vittata. Here we report that gametophytes of P. vittata from Beppu City and Okinawa Island in western Japan hyperaccumulate arsenic in a similar manner to that observed in the sporophyte. The gametophytes from the Beppu City are able to grow in medium containing 10mM arsenate and accumulate>1.8% of their dry weight as arsenic. The results suggest gametophytes of P. vittata also have a great potential to be used for phytoremediation and the relative ability of tolerance and accumulation show some local variation of their sources.

Abundance of trace elements including toxic heavy metals in water along the Tobe River system are determined by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) to identify the origin of high contents of arsenic and antimony in the water around the area. Based on our new data, the highest contents of arsenic and antimony come locally from any groundwater related to the abandoned Koboshi-mine, in which mines mainly stibnite (antimony). The high abundances of the elements are diluted with increase of water volume. As the results, arsenic content through the river system becomes below the 0.01mg/L considered to be environmental criteria. On the other hand, the antimony content in the water is still too high as compared to item to be monitored. This is consistent with results of the previously reported value. We need further monitoring of the antimony contents through the river system.

Olivine-orthopyroxene-andesite in Tobe Town, Ehime Prefecture, Japan has been investigated based on geology and petrology. It intrudes into the Mannen altered andesite but it has not undergone hydrothermal alteration. The olivine-orthopyroxene-andesite contains Mg-rich olivine and orthopyroxene and Cr-rich chromite. It is a high-Mg andesite (HMA) based on petrography and bulk rock chemistry. From the effect of the hydrothermal alteration the age of the intrusion is inferred to be immediately after the hydrothermal alteration of the Mannen altered andesite.

We determined trace element abundance in twenty seven ferns and related lichen from the Mannen area, Tobe Town, Ehime Prefecture, to find plants for phytoremediation. Although the most ferns do not show specific accumulation for any toxic elements, Arachniodes standishii (Moore) Ohwi contains significant amount of antimony (max. 44μg/g-DW). Further greenhouse pot experiment is needed to test the possibility for the fern as the accumulator.

The weathering process of Mannen altered andesite in Tobe Town, Ehime Prefecture, Japan, has been investigated based on geology, petrography and geochemistry. The Mannen andesite intrudes into the Sanbagawa metamorphic rocks and the Middle Miocene Kuma group. The andesite dyke have undergone extensive hydrothermal alteration and mineralization, and has domains of a high concentration of As, S and Sb. Index alteration minerals are pyrite, arsenopyrite, marcasite, stibnite, quartz, carbonate, chlorite, titanite and illite. The weathering types in the near surface of the Mannen andesite is divided into five based on the degree of progress of weathering. That results show that domains of sulphide minerals-rich altered andesite are extremely weathered. CaO, Fe_2O_3, MgO, Pb, Cu, Sb, S and As are depleted in weathered parts of the Mannen andesite based on isocon analysis. Especially, Fe_2O_3, S and As are extremely depleted in weathered parts of sulphide minerals-rich altered andesites. It shows that sulphide minerals in the andesite are decomposed by interaction of surface water and microbial activity, and these elements are leaching away to surrounding environments.

Precise quantitative analyses of arsenic for a small amount of dried plant samples (〜10 mg) by instrumental neutron activation analyses (INAA) and inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) were developed to evaluate environmental purification of soil and water by phytoremediation technique. To confirm the reliability of the analytical methods, we measured standard material NIES No.l (pepperbush). Obtained arsenic contents of the NIES No.l by INAA and ICP-MS were 2.18 ± 0.03 μg/g-DW and 2.25 ± 0.03 μg/g-DW, respectively. Both results agree well with the certificated value of the NIES standard (2.3 ± 0.3 μg/g-DW). Results by both analytical methods for the higher arsenic contents ofPteris vittata L. (〜4,000 μg/g) were also satisfied to confirm the accuracy. Consequently, we conclude that both quantitative analytical methods are appropriate for determine the wide range of arsenic content in small amount of plant samples.

Phytoremediation is the use of plants for the in situ cleanup of contaminated soils, sediments, and ground water. Pot-scale experiment evaluated phytoremediation by Pteris vittata L. (Chinese brake fern) for mudstone containing arsenic (12.3 mg/kg-DW) of the Hakobuchi Group in the Yubari City, central Hokkaido, Japan. In this experiment, fronds of Pteris vittata L. were taken after 18 weeks growth in soil. The following properties became clear after examining the experimental results. (1) The brake fern can growth in the soil made from mudstone containing arsenic. (2) The highest arsenic concentrations in the frond of Pteris vittata L. growing in the soil are about 3000 mg/kg-DW. (3) The fern removed arsenic about 10 % from mudstone. The results suggested that the brake fern has a great poten tial to be used for phytoremediating soils with low concentration of arsenic.

Arsenic hyperaccumulation and tolerance in gametophytes and spores ofPteris vittata L. (brake fern) have been investigated. Gametophytes are able to grow normally in medium containing 50 to 200 or 300 μM arsenite and arsenate. In medium containing <300 μM arsenite and 500 μM arsenate, gametophytes do not almost grow. The highest arsenic concentrations in gametophytes are about 1,023 and 920 mg/kg-DW in medium containing 300 μM of arsenite and arsenate. The results suggest that gametophytes of the brake fern also has a great potential to be used for phytoremediating soils with low concentration of arsenic.

Mode of occurrences of sulfide minerals and As concentrations of samples from a horizontal boring core of Mannen altered andesite in the Tobe Town, Ehime Prefecture, Japan, has been investigated based on petrography, mineralogy and geochemistry. The Mannen altered andesite intrudes into the vicinity of boundary between the Sanbagawa metamorphic rocks and the Middle Miocene Kuma group. The andesite body has undergone extensive hydrothermal alteration, and has domains of a high concentration of As, S and Sb. Index alteration minerals are pyrite, arsenopyrite, marcasite, stibnite, quartz, opal, carbonate minerals, chlorite, illite and kaolinite. In the Mannen arrear textures of sulphide minerals can be divided into the following six types; sparse, sand spot pool and vein, and black-ink-drawing types. The black-ink-drawing type is characterized by the abundance in marcasite and arsenopyrite. The high concentration domains in arsenic are in general agreement with that characterzed by sulphide minerals of the black-ink-drawing type. Sb, S and As are extremely added and Na_2O, MgO, CaO and FeO are depleted in the Mannen andesites during the hydrothermal alteration on the basis of isocon analyses.

Mine drainage and yellowish brownish precipitation (so called "yellow boy") in the Ichinokawa mine, Saijyo City, Ehime prefecture, Japan, have been geochemically investigated. The mine drainage reaching the Ichinokawa River originates in the Senga gallery of the Ichinokawa mine. The Ichinokawa mine drainage is characteristically high in arsenic and exceeds the water-quality standard on arsenic. The yellowish brownish precipitation is characterized by high iron, arsenic and antimony contents. It is supposed that the Ichinokawa mine drainage has been formed by pyrite weathering. The drainage does not have a negative impact on the water quality of the Ichinokawa River. However, the Ichinokawa rivers may be degraded by the Ichinokawa mine drainage in future.

Seventeen trace element abundance (Li, Al, V, Cr, Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Ga, As, Rb, Sr, Cd, Cs, Ba and Pb) for 4 fountains and 8 river waters derived from the high As-bearing Mannen andesite body, Tobe-town, Ehime prefecture, were determined for environmental assessment by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). We had predicted high arsenic contents in the surface waters, because the local geologic background contains extremely high arsenic content (max. 1200 ppm As). The arsenic contents in the waters are low (<3.5 ng/g) contrary to our expectations, which the concentrations of the arsenic are below the environmental standard (<10 ng/g As). However, there is still in danger of increasing the arsenic contents by abrupt environmental change such as expansion project of road and tunnel in the area. The construction may produce large amount of rock debris including abnormally high arsenic. Consequently, further weathering of the debris at the surface condition must cause new liquation into surface water of arsenic from the rock. On the other hand, river water around the former Choshi-daki sulfide-ore Mine in the andesite body contains abnormally high zinc content (ca. 200 ng/g). This must be influenced by solve out of zinc ions to the water from the country rock. We need further environmental monitoring for the water condition.

Tectonic blocks are widely distributed throughout the serpentinite melange of the Peel-Manning Fault System, southern New England Fold Belt, Australia. Two meta-diorite blocks from the Pigna Barney area have distinctly differing chemical signatures. One resembles boninite, containing high Ni and Cr, low rare earth element (REEs), and high field strength element (HFSEs) contents. Further, it exhibits an enriched chondrite normalized LREE pattern and an atypical epsilonNd(536Ma), value of -4. Well-defined isochrons for this sample gave Sm-Nd and Rb-Sr ages of 536+/-38 Ma and 426+/-38 Ma respectively The former represents the emplacement age and the latter resetting of the Rb-Sr system during a later metamorphic event. The initial Nd isotopic composition suggests an enriched source. The other meta-diorite block has a flat REE pattern, a Ti/V ratio >10 and Y, La and Nb values typical of tholeiitic magmas erupted in an island arc setting. By contrast, blueschists from this locality and from the Glenrock Station area show depleted REE patterns, Ti/V = 20-50, and epsilonNd(480Ma) = +8, features characteristic of normal mid-ocean ridge basalts (N-MORB). Meta-diorites from the Glenrock Station area have moderately depleted signatures (epsilonNd(400Ma) = +4.5) and Ti/V ratios and REE patterns typical of calc-alkaline and tholeiitic island arc magmas. These contrast with hornblende cumulate rocks from this location, which have very high Cr and Ni, low Zr and Y, and show slight LREE-enriched chondrite normalized patterns. Chromites (100 Cr/Cr+Al = 85) and clinopyroxenes (Wo(93)En(42.3)Fs(7.7)- Wo(48)En(43.7)Fs(8.3)) in these rocks reveal an island arc affinity. The epsilonNd(420Ma) values vary from +2 to +4 and Rb-Sr ages from 425+/-44 Ma to 411+/-15 Ma. The core of a single grain of cumulus hornblende gave a poorly defined Ar-40/Ar-39 age of 394 Ma in contrast to younger ages (235-263 Ma) obtained from other grains. The younger ages are attributed to resetting of the K-Ar system during a metamorphic event. This study has provided further evidence for an Early Paleozoic arc-trench system along the eastern Gondwana margin.

Chemical compositions of cored sea floor sediments from six stations (Yawatahama, Mikame, Hoketsu, Uwajima, Shitaba and Kitanada Bays) in Uwakai Sea along the western part of the Shikoku Island were analysed by instrumental neutron activation analyses, in order to evaluate influences of inflow materials from geological hinterland and human pollution. Scandium, chromium, iron and cobalt contents in the sediments from the Yawatahama and Mikame Bays, which locate to the northern part of the Uwakai Sea, are obviously high compared with that from other stations. This is strongly depended on the materials from geological hinterland. Mafic rocks including higher contents of such elements belong to the Sambagawa and Mikabu belts distributed in the area. By weathering of the rocks, the constituting particles directly deposit to the sea floor in the bay areas. On the other hand, zinc content of the sediments from the Yawatahama and Uwajima Bays is two times as large as that of the normal sediments. This may be caused by human pollution, because the twobays face to urban areas in the Uwakai Sea region. However, further examination is necessary to that the possibility of human influences, based on the genesis of sulfide in diatom and relationship between zinc and total organic carbon contents.

We present mineralogical, petrological and geochemical data to constrain the origin of the Harzburg mafic-ultramafic intrusion. The intrusion is composed mainly of mafic rocks ranging from gabbronorite to quartz diorite. Ultramafic rocks are very rare in surface outcrops. Dunite is observed only in deeper sections of the Flora I drill core. Microgranitic (fine-grained quartz-feldspathic) veins found in the mafic and ultramafic rocks result from contamination of the ultramafic magmas by crustal melts. In ultramafic and mafic compositions cumulate textures are widespread and filter pressing phenomena are obvious. The order of crystallization is olivine --> pargasite, phlogopite, spinel --> plagioclase, orthopyroxene --> plagioclase, clinopyroxene. Hydrous minerals such as phlogopite and pargasite are essential constituents of the ultramafic cumulates. The most primitive olivine composition is Fo(89.5) with similar to0.4 wt % NiO, which indicates that the olivine may have been in equilibrium with primitive mantle melts. Coexisting melt compositions estimated from this olivine have mg-number = 71. The chemical variety of the rocks constituting the intrusion and the mg-number of the most primitive melt allow an estimation of the approximate composition of the mantle-derived primary magma. The geochemical characteristics of the estimated magma are similar to those of an island-arc tholeiite, characterized by low TiO2 and alkalis and high Al2O3. Geochemical and Pb, Sr and Nd isotope data demonstrate that even the most primitive rocks have assimilated crustal material. The decoupling of Sr from Nd in some samples demonstrates the influence of a fluid that transported radiogenic Sr. Lead of crustal origin from two isotopically distinct reservoirs dominates the Pb of all samples. The ultramafic rocks and the cumulates best reflect the initial isotopic and geochemical signature of the parent magma. Magma that crystallized in the upper part of the chamber was more strongly affected by assimilated material. Petrographic, geochemical and isotope evidence demonstrates that during a late stage of crystallization, hybrid rocks formed through the mechanical mixing of early cumulates and melts with strong crustal contamination from the upper levels of the magma chamber.

Language:English Publishing type:Research paper (scientific journal) Publisher:BLACKWELL SCIENCE ASIA

Greenstones, representing remnants of paleo-oceanic crust, occur in Permian and Jurassic accretionary complexes of the Inner Zone in the Southwestern Japan arc. The formation age of most of the greenstones is early Carboniferous, based on fossil ages for overlying limestones and Sm-Nd isotope ages of the greenstones themselves. The geochemistry of such greenstones is similar to those of present-day oceanic islands. Greenstones of the Permian accretionary complex (Akiyoshi belt) are alkalic and tholeiitic in composition. Some alkali basalts show peculiar feature from an EM-1 mantle source, such as the Gough Island and Tristan da Chunha basalts in the South Atlantic. Greenstones of the Jurassic accretionary complex (Tamba belt) are also alkali and tholeiitic basalts with both basalt types in the northern part of the Tamba belt coming from strongly depleted characters similar to a mid-ocean ridge basalt source mantle. The variable geochemistry of the oceanic basalts is explained by hypothesis on existence of a Carboniferous mantle plume below the spreading ridge which divides the Farallon and Izanagi plates. The Akiyoshi belt seamounts and/or oceanic islands of the Farallon plate and Tamba belt seamounts and/or oceanic islands of the Izanagi plate formed simultaneously by the upwelling of the thermal plume. Some part of the Akiyoshi belt basalts originated locally from an EM-1 mantle source, while basalts from the northern parts of the Tamba belt have a normal-type mid-ocean ridge basalt (N-MORB) source component. Existence of an N-MORB signature is consistent with the presence of a spreading center in a Carboniferous 'Pacific Ocean' that caused separation of the Farallon and Izanagi plates. Disparity in accretion ages of the basaltic rocks in the Permian and Jurassic may have been caused by differences in the relative motion of the two plates.

Recent advances in inductively coupled plasma source-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) has enabled us to determine trace and ultra-trace elements contained in various geochemical samples. Due to the high sensitivity and rapid mass scanning features of ICP-MS, multiple element analysis for trace elements can be performed without any pre-concentration procedure. The high sensitivity also permits direct spot analysis of solid geochemicl samples using laser ablation (LA) or laser probe (LP) sampling techniques. Spatial resolution as fine as 5-15μm has been achieved in the LP system. However, despite the great analytical ability of ICP-MS, some care should be taken in quantitative analyses. Spectroscopic interferences such as oxide molecular ions (MO^+), doubly charged ions (M^<++>), and polyatomic ions (i. e., ArX^+) affect the accuracy of measurements for the certain elements.Non-spectroscopic interferences, known as the matrix effect, also affect the analytical accuracy. There are two causes of the matrix effect: one originates in the plasma equilibrium and the other is the mass discrimination effect in an ion beam known as the "space charge effect". Differences in both the major chemical composition and introduction volume of analyte shift the aspect of the matrix effect. In order to attain high precision and accuracy in the analysis, optimization of the facility setting and analytical procedure is required to minimize those interferences. The problem in LA analysis is elemental fractionation mainly due to thermal heating of the sampling site during the laser ablation. This paper presents the facilities, functions, and analytical techniques of ICP-MS. Actual examples of terrestrial water analysis, rock analysis using solution samples, and micro analysis of minerals and bulk-rock analysis using LA-ICP-MS are also presented in this paper.

Basaltic dikes of the Lee River Group (Permian) at Roding River and in the Red Hills ultramafic body, both parts of the Dun Mountain Ophiolite, were analysed for major and trace elements. The dikes in the Lee River Group change into massive and pillowed lava towards the uppermost part of the sequence. The dikes in the Red Hills occur parallel to the layering of host ultramafic rocks. The Red Hills ultramafic body corresponds to the mantle-crust transition zone. The age of Red Hills dikes has been determined at c. 280 Ma. Hence, the Lee River Group and Red Hills dike complexes are about the same age. There are contrasting differences, however, between major and trace element compositions in those two dike rock groups. Lee River Group basalts show an increase in FeO*/MgO with increase in SiO2; high field strength elements and REE concentrations are higher in the Lee River Group than those in the Red Hills basalts; and epsilon Nd values are +7.5 to +8.3, suggesting the source to be depleted mantle. On the other hand, Red Hills basalts do not show an increase in FeO*/MgO with increase in SiO2, and are relatively enriched in large ion lithophile elements such as Ba and Sr, depleted in high field strength elements and REE, and epsilon Nd values (+6.2 and +7.1) of plagiogranites associated with the Red Hills basalts are lower than those in the Lee River Group basalts. Lee River Group basalts have MORB or back-arc basin basalt affinities, whereas Red Hills basalts have island arc related characteristics. The new set of geochemical data is consistent with the Red Hills ultramafic body being a section of residual uppermost mantle previously described. The Dun Mountain Ophiolite is here suggested to have been derived from an island arc related tectonic environment following the extraction of MORB in a back-arc basin at 280 Ma.

Spectroscopic interferences such as oxide molecular ions (MO+), doubly charged ions (M++), and polyatomic ions (i. e., ArX+) affect the accuracy of measurements for the certain elements.Non-spectroscopic interferences, known as the matrix effect, also affect the analytical accuracy.

Shikoku Karst, the mountainous limestone plateau extending from west to east in central Shikoku, is one of Upper Paleozoic limestone plateau in the southwest Japan outer belt. Basal greenstones, overlain by the limestone bed are composed of weakly porous pillow to massive lavas and hyaloclastites which are intercalated with thin chert and clastic sediments. Petrochemical affinity of the greenstones from Shikoku Karst with arc basalt is well exhibited by MORB normalized Nb-depleted spidergram. The greenstones from Akiyoshi-dai and Taishaku-dai, the coeval limestone plateaus in the southwest Japan inner belt, have the similar petrochemistry to seamounts or oceanic islands of intra-oceanic plate. REE abundance of the greenstones from
Shikoku Karst is evidently lower than that of Taishaku-dai and Akiyoshi-dai. Chondrite normalized patterns of the rocks from Shikoku Karst characterized by low and mild downward inclination from LREE to HREE or mild upward convex of intermediate REE are similar to that of N-MORB and/or island-arc tholeiites. Chondrite normalized patterns of the greenstones from Akiyoshi-dai and Taishaku-dai represent tholeiitic and alkaline basalts patterns of within oceanic plate. CeN/YbN to CeN relation supports the same magmatic and geotectonic interpretation mentioned above.
It is concluded that the greenstones from Shikoku Karst represent island arc related origin, and the greenstones from Taishaku-dai and Akiyoshi-dai express intra-plate seamounts or oceanic islands.

Several late Paleozoic limestone plateaus sporadically occur in Southwest Japan. The Taishaku limestone plateau located at the northeastern part of Hiroshima Prefecture is one of them. The Taishaku greenstones are classified geologically and petrologically into two different types; one is of alkaline basalt forming the basement of limestone and the other is of tholeiitic basalt cropping out in clastic rocks in and around the limestone plateau. Sr isotopic ratios of the alkaline basalts range from 0.70546 to 0.70622. Some relict clinopyroxenes separated from the alkaline basalts have isotope ratio slower than their respective host basalts and the ratios range from 0.70522 to 0.7560. Sr isotopic ratios of the tholeiitic basalts are lower than those of the alkaline basalts, ranging from 0.70476 to 0.70553. Two clinopyroxenes from the tholeiitic basalts also have lower isotopic ratios from 0.70432 to 0.70485. In a ^<87>Rb/^<86>Sr versus ^<87>Sr/^<86>Sr isochron diagram, the plots of the alkaline basalts indicate a broad clustering which does not express a single isochron, however some points suggest a coincidental fit with the reference isochron of 370 Ma. A single clinopyroxene-bulk rock join also shows nearly the same inclination as the 370 Ma reference isochron. However, the steep inclination of other clinopyroxene-bulk rock pairs suggests the possibility of Sr enrichment in rocks during metamorphism. The plots of tholeiitic basalts are scattered widely and do not indicate isochronous trend. Nd isotopic ratios of the alkaline basalts can be divided into two groups; normal alkaline (N-type) and enriched alkaline (E-type) basalts. The N-type alkaline basalts have Nd isotopic ratios ranging from 0.51262 to 0.51269, which are similar to those of the tholeiitic basalts. In a ^<147>Sm/^<144>Nd versus ^<143>Nd/^<144>Nd diagram, a clinopyroxene-bulk rock pair of tholeiitic basalt shows 370 Ma isochron, and those of other two tholeiitic basalts and two N- type alkaline basalts express 366 Ma. Five analyses out of seven enriched alkaline basalts also give a linear fit for the 370 Ma reference isochron. In a Nd-Sr epsilon diagram, the ε_^<Nd> values of the enriched alkaline basalts are from -0.7 to -3.5, whereas those of the normal alkaline basalts and tholeiitic basalts form a cluster around +4 to +5. The enriched basalts of the Kerguelen Islands volcanics in the south of the Indian Ocean and the similar basalts from Tristan da Cunha in the south of Atlantic Ocean have nearly the same ε_^<Nd> values as the Taishaku enriched alkaline basalts. These enriched basalts are characterized by their ε_^<Nd> <0 andε_^<Sr>=+10 to +20. In other words, these alkaline basalts are plotted on the "mantle array" which extends to ε_^<Nd> < 0. The present study supports the existence of an anomalous EMI type or TGK type alkaline basalt seamount of latest Devonian age. These anomolous basalts also suggest that there was once "EM I or TGK" like LIL elements enriched source mantle under the old Pacific Ocean of latest Devonian age.

The auther has examined mantle heterogeneity by using the neodymium isotope data of oceanic region. It has been stated that the εNd values of MORBs originating from the most depleted mantle are characterized by the range between +9 and +12, However, from many collected data, it has been recognized that the εNd values of +10 and over are rare. The most depleted MORBs are distributed in restricted region of the Northern Hemisphere. On the other hand, the MORBs of the Southern Hemisphere are characterized by low εNd values as compared with those of the Northern Hemisphere, and form the isotopically anomalous zone. The most of new εNd data concentrate between +7 and +10, and the ranges of those values are different in each ocean. The εNd values of OIBs in the Southern Atlantic and the Indian Oceans are +1 to -2. They are lower than those of the other OIBs. It has been suggested that large-scale Pb and Sr isotopic mantle anomalies (Dupal anomaly) exist in the Southern Hemisphere. On neodymium isotopic composition, the auther also has been recognized the anomalous zone in the Southern Atlantic and the Indian Oceans. Furthermore, it has been clearly that the anomaly on OIBs is found in the same area on MORBs.

The Kohistan block in northern Pakistan is interpreted as a surface-exposed crustal cross section down to the upper mantle/lower crust boundary of the "Kohistan paleo-island arc" which was sandwiched between the Eurasian and Indian coantinents at the closure of the Tethys during the Cretaceous. We can enjoy fine exposures of this whole crustal cross section along the Karakoram Highway which follows the Indus River.

REE abundance of the greenstones from <br>Shikoku Karst is evidently lower than that of Taishaku-dai and Akiyoshi-dai. CeN/YbN to CeN relation supports the same magmatic and geotectonic interpretation mentioned above.<br> It is concluded that the greenstones from Shikoku Karst represent island arc related origin, and the greenstones from Taishaku-dai and Akiyoshi-dai express intra-plate seamounts or oceanic islands.

Radiometric age and origin of metagabbros and the related plagio-granites constituting "Yakuno ophiolite" in Maizuru Tectonic Belt, southwest Japan, have been examined by using the Nd isotopic compositions.<br> It has been considered that the metagabbros are equivalent to lower parts of unusually thick oceanic crust, because the metamorphism corresponds to amphibolite ?? granulite facies. Based upon K-Ar and Rb-Sr mineral age determinations, the range of radiometric age of 240-280 Ma has been reported.<br> The Sm-Nd ages of the metagabbros and the related rocks are 409-426 Ma, and the initial 134Nd/144Nd ratio is 0.512265-0.512300 (εNd=+3.4-3.7). The obtained ages are enough older than results of previous works. These ages must represent igneous event such as the solidification from a magma. Ages including clinopyroxene which is product of metamorphism of granulite facies condition, are also same with that of isochron of whole rocks. Ages reported from previous workers maybe represent the events that the minerals such as amphiboles and micas are recrystallized during metamorphism of any later stages, or passed through the closure temperatures of the system. Therefore, metamorphism of granulite facies should be followed to the magmatic process.<br> The ages of 409-426 Ma of the gabbros and the related rocks of the "Yakuno ophiolite" is similar to that of age (about 400 Ma) of metagabbros in the Sangun-Renge Belt where locates on different tectonic unit. Based on age similarity the gabbros of the "Yakuno ophiolite" may at least belong to member of mafic-ultramafic complexes in the Sangun-Renge Belt.<br> The obtained εNd values of the gabbros at 409-426 Ma are +3.4-+3.7. These values are quite lower than those from recent oceanic basalts. On the other hand, it has been reported that the metabasalts from the Ibara district belonging to the Maizuru Tectonic Belt show higher εNd values of +7.7, and younger age of about 300 Ma. Furthermore, it has been preliminary reported that Rb-Sr whole rock radiometric age of metabasalts in the Yakuno district is 285 Ma. It means that there is no genetic relations between the metagabbros in the Yakuno district and metabasalts in both Yakuno and Ibara districts. Metagabbros and the related rocks in the Yakuno ophiolite must represent lower crustal materials showing less depleted Nd isotopic signature at Silurian Epoch.

Malakand ophiolitic peridotite, which is fragment formed by convergence of Indian and Eurasia plates, represents the uppermost mantle beneath an island arc. The main constituents are strongly depleted harzburgite with intercalating dunite, which includes minor chromitite. Based on the field occurrence, petrologic and mineralogic studies and rare earth elements compositions of the ultramafic rocks, an interaction between residual mantle wall rock and the percolating melt around the uppermost mantle is important to consider the magma process.

Tectonic blocks are widely distributed throughout the serpentinite melange of the Peel-Manning Fault System, southern New England Fold Belt, Australia. Two meta-diorite blocks from the Pigna Barney area have distinctly differing chemical signatures. One resembles boninite, containing high Ni and Cr, low rare earth element (REEs), and high field strength element (HFSEs) contents. Further, it exhibits an enriched chondrite normalized LREE pattern and an atypical εND_<536Ma> value of -4. Well-defined isochrons for this sample gave Sm-Nd and Rb-Sr ages of 536±38 Ma and 426±38 Ma respectively. The former represents the emplacement age and the latter to resetting of the Rb-Sr system during a later metamorphic event. The initial Nd isotopic composition suggests an enriched source. The other meta-diorite block has a flat REE pattern, a Ti/V ratio >10 and Y, La and Nb values typical of tholeiitic magmas erupted in an island arc setting. By contrast, blueschists from this locality and from the Glenrock Station area show depleted REE patterns, Ti/V=20-50, and εNd_<480Ma>=+8, features characteristic of normal mid-ocean ridge basalts (N-MORB). Meta-diorites from the Glenrock Station area have moderately depleted signatures (εNd_<400Ma>=+4.5) and Ti/V ratios and REE patterns typical of calc-alkaline and tholeiiticc island arc magmas. These contrast with hornblende cumulate rocks from this location, which have very high Cr and Ni, low Zr and Y, and show slight LREE-enriched chondrite normalized patterns. Chromites (100Cr/Cr+AI=85) and clinopyroxenes (Wo_<93>En_<42.3>Fs_<7.7>-Wo_<48>En_<43.77>Fs_<8.3>) in these rocks reveal an island are affinity. The eNd_<420Ma> values vary from +2 to +4 and Rb-Sr ages from 425±44 Ma to 411±15 Ma. The core of a single grain of cumulus hornblende gave a poorly defined ^<40>Ar/^<39>Ar age of 394 Ma in contrast to younger ages (235-263 Ma) obtained from other grains. The younger ages are attributed to resetting of the K-Ar system during a metamorphic event. This study has provided further evidence for an Early Paleozoic arc-trench system along the eastern Gondwana margin.

The Red Hills peridotite body (RHP) in Dun Mountain ophiolite belt in South Island, New Zealand, is divided into two parts, a harzburgite dominant zone in thelower part (L-RHP) and a dunite dominant zone in the upper part (U-RHP). The L-RHP harzburgite is homogeneous except for a plagioclase-bearing variety in the uppermost part. In the U-RHP, clinopyroxene-bearing and plagioclase-bearing dunites and blocky harzburgites are observed in the common dunite matrix. It is supposed an interaction process on relatiotiships between the dunite and the U-RHP ranges from 87.0 to 92.5 while that in the L-RHP ranges from 90.5 to 93.0. Spinels in the U-RHP show a variation of 0.2 to 0.6 in Cr#, but have lower Mg# than those in the L-RHP. On Fo in olivine and Cr# in spinel, there is a good correlation which has been proposed as olivine-spinel mantle array, on rocks of the L-RHP, while mineral compositions of the U-RHP shift from the array to lower Fo side. Based on textures, modal compositions and chemical compositions, the L-RHP corresponds to residual upper mantle beneath a mid-ocean ridge, and the U-RHP represents line mantle-crust transition zone. Chondrite-normalised REE patterns of the U-RHP clinopyroxene show a wide compositional range compared with those in the L-RHP clinopyroxene. The REE patterns of cpx- and pl-dunites in the U-RHP are strongly depleted in LREE relative to those of clinopyroxenes in other ophiolitic dunites. Inferred melt compositions from the clinopyroxenes are not consistent with erupted MORB compositions, but rather similar to those of ultra-depleted primary melts included in olivine phenocryst hosted in MORB. The possible mechanism for producing the ultra-depleted melt has been considered as critical melting at the shallowest level. The clinopyroxenes in the U-RHP dunites probably be precipitated during such melting process at shallow level mantle. Clinopyroxene REE patterns in the L-RHP harzburgites are strongly depleted in LREE〜MREE. The LREE concentration is rather lower than clinopyroxenes in normal oceanic peridotites. The strongly LREE-MREE depleted patterns of the clinopyroxenes in the L-RHP harzburgite could be explained by polybaric multiple melting processes through garnet-to spinel-stability fields.

The target of our research is to reconstruct the Early Paleozoic arc-trench system along the eastern margin of Gondwanaland. However, the chronological results on Attunga eclogite and host gabbro in the serpentinite melange yield a range from 660Ma to 460Ma zircon U-Pb SHRIMP gaes with 660Ma, thus the time span for rearch has been expanded to Neoproterozoic. Tectonics of Neoproterozoic along the later Gondwana eastern margin include those of breakup process of the Rodinia supercontinient . We obtain the following results
1) We propose a model of the Phillipne type for Early Paleozoic Gondwana margin.
2) In Latest Neoproterozoic, a subduction zone was produced. Simultneously, a rifting and opening of an ocean in the Kanmantoo Fold Belt occurred in the Eastern Gondwana part.
3) Serpentinite melange includes various kinds or igneous and metamorphic rocks. Their ages range from Neoproterozoic to Early Mesozoic.
4) During the Rodinia breakup, petrochemical evidence of mantle plume activity is obatained.
After the breakup, arc systems were formed firstly in SW Siberia and then Australia.

The results obtained from this research project are summarized as follows.
Petrological features and mode of occurrences of greenstones especially exposed in the Sorachi-Yezo belt were reexamined. Geochemical characteristics in respect to minor elemetns, rare earth elements, isotopic compositions of the greenstone, which are previously regarded to have N-MORB signatures, show that they are rather resemble to those of oceanic plateau basalts. In particular, Nb contents are slightly higher than N-MORB whereas HFS elements such as Y and Zr are depleted than N-MORB.Furthermore, intrusive relations of the greenstones against chert were found from several localities, indicating that the igneous activity initiated after the deposition of pelagic sediments. Therefore, these intrusive rocks may correspond to the initial stage of magmatism such as hot-spot type or oceanic plateau type magmatism, Geochemical and age data for the greenstones in the Mikabu belt in Southwest Japan have been carried out also.
In situ greenstones with MORB features which were prpbably generated by the subduction of ocean ridge, are extensively described in the shimanto belt and Hidaka belt from Okinawa Island to Hokkaido along thorough Japanese Island. Age determination, mode of occurrence, petrographical and petrological features were studied for them. Systematic younging toward north of radiolarilan fossil ages in the sediments associating with the insitu greenstones bcomes to clear. Besides, interaction between basaltic rocks and intruded sediments was clarified in respect to chemical exchange between them. Some LIL elements such as K and Rb are significantly removed from the sediments whereas Si is added into the sediments near the boundary. Thus, such chmical characteristics of the silicifie sediments can be used as an indicator showing basaltic intrusions into unsolidifed sediments.

Regional volcanic activities of high magnesian andesite during the late stage of Japan Sea opening were widely extended in the circum Seto Inland Sea area. In the northwest of Shikoku, calcalkaline volcanism which was related to the magmatism of Ishizuchi cauldron spread thick dacitic pyroclastic flow westward followed by calcalkaline Kuromoritoge andesite. The dacitic pyroclastic flow called Takano pyroclastic rock comprises lower pumice and fragment rich layr and upper fine ash rich sediments.
Various rhyo-dacitic intrusion such as pottasium rich Taisanji-type acidic volcanic rocks, per-aluminous Myojinyama-type acidic volcanic rocks and K-feldspar bearing Misakatoge rhyolite are also exposed in the area. Rhyo-dacitic pyroclastic volcanism was also antecedent to high magnesian magmatism in Goshikidai.
Chondrite normarized REE patterns of rhyo-dacitic to rhyolite rocks of the area exhibit LREE enrichment and steep inclination to HREE side and the most of the pattern exhibit negative Eu anomaly. Specific patterns which reflect magma source are also present. The potassium rich Taisanji-type rocks are enriched in REE and indicate relative mild inclination, whereas Misakatoge rhyolites are relatively poor in HREE and show steep inclination. Not distinctive negative Eu anomaly in the Kuromoritoge andesite suggests a least fractionation of magma. Variation of Inital Sr isotope ratios of these rocks are accordant with REE characteristics.

Geochemistry of Paleo-Mesozoic greenstones give petrological and geological constraints on geotectonic settings of Japanese Islands. This project deals with the greenstones collected from basement greenstones of Akiyoshi, Taishaku and Atetsu of the Inner belt, Shikoku Karst, Nakatsu Myojin of the Outer belt of southwest Japan. Ages of the greenstones are younger than overlain limestones which are biostratigraphically estimated from upper Carboniferous to Permian by including fusulinid.
Abundance of whole REE in massive basalt lava from Taishaku limestone plateau is exceedingly higher in alkaline metabasalt and enriched in light REE than that of tholeiite. In alkaline basalts Ce rangews from 70 to 120 ppm and La content is from 34 to 57 ppm, whereas in tholeiite, abundances of these elements are low from 28 to 38 and 12 to 15ppm respectively. Heavy REE contents are nearly the same to both rock types. Yb concentration is 1 to 2 ppm and does not depend on rock type. Basalt lava from Shikoku Karst characterized by Ti and Al rich purple colored augite phenocryst have lower concentration of REE than Taishaku metabasalts.
Chondrite normarized REE patterns of the Taishaku greenstone exhibit LREE enriched steep inclined pattern. The LREE enriched inclined pattern is characteristic of recent intra-plate ocean island or seamount basalts. Alkaline ocean island basalts which bear total REE more than 250 ppm and chondrite normarized value of La more than 200 as revealed from Taishaku greenstones suggest partial melting in the large ionic lithophile elements enriched mantle.
