This paper addresses writer Itsuki Hiroyuki’s 1966 debut novel Farewell to Moscow Misfits through the lens of middlebrow novels, jazz novels, and repatriates. This novel draws from Itsuki’s personal experience being repatriated from colonial Korea after the war and visiting the Soviet Union in the mid-1960s. Farewell was unique for its time in representing jazz, music, and youth “stilyagi” counterculture in the Soviet Union. This counterculture movement was roughly contemporaneous with the student movement of the 1960s in Japan. This period also saw the popularization of the “middlebrow novel”—an ambiguous term that was used to describe literature outside of the established pure/popular dichotomy. These amorphous “middlebrow” works allow us to read some of the cultural dynamics of the 1960s. Itsuki published many of his early works in so-called middlebrow magazines, not “pure” literary journals. Itsuki himself claimed that his works were neither pure literature nor popular literature; they were simply “entertainment”. He placed his works in relation to jazz, the circus, and enka. His unique views on cultural production and media emerged from his repatriation experiences and his encounter with Russian culture. This paper examines not only genre conventions in literature but also Itsuki’s objections to the pure/popular literary structure, as well as his place in cultural representations of the 1960s.

  • REPRESENTATIONS OF POPULAR CULTURE IN TANIZAKI JUN'ICHIRO'S IN PRAISE OF SHADOWS

    ( 21 )   99 - 113   1998.10

     More details

    Language:Japanese

The years immediately following 1933 are customarily referred to as a period of "literary revival," in the first edition of the literary magazine Bungaku-kai, Kawabata Yasunari asserted that "now there are indeed signs of a revival in literature." Almost certainly, Kawabata was referring to "pure" literature (jun-bungaku) rather than the rival genre of "popular" literature (taishu-bungaku). However, the single reason for the wide popularization of taishu literature was the rapid development of mass communications in the wake of the Great Kanto Earthquake, which had precipitated on overwhelming rise in the number of publications aimed at the mass market.Tanizaki, who had made a significant contribution to the "literary revival", blamed the rise of popular literature for the failure of his own works to attract attention. "Ever since this started," he complained, "I have been completely ignored by the critics" Although keen enough to ask themselves how best to guide the flood of popular literature, surprisingly few writers and critics of the period gave any thought to the significance of the phenomenon itself. In this paper, I would like to consider "In Praise of Shadows" (In'ei Raisan), in which Tanizaki, previously an ardent admirer of the West, depicted the beauty of Japanese life. This work may be interpreted as a statement of dissent against what Tanizaki regarded as the excessively hygienic cultural structure which lay behind the boom in popular culture.I propose to examine Tanizaki's work in the light of contemporary publications, which provide valuable clues to the cultural customs of the day.At the outset of the revival, the literary divide lay between "pure" and "popular" fiction. But in "In Praise of Shadows" Tanizaki sets the boundary between literature and culture. Rather than crossing this divide, Tanizaki shows how it may be defined from a writer's point of view. The object of this paper to clarify, by means of a comparison with publications, the place of "In Praise of Shadows" within Tanizaki's representation of popular culture.

  • Nakagami Kenji's Experiences in Korea and Their Influence on His Later Novels::The Geographical Expansion of "roji" to Asia

<p> Nakagami Kenji is said to be a novelist who often utilized the alley ("roji") in his novels. His concept of "roji" was initially associated with the Hisabetsu Buraku (an area where descendants of the lowest social class in the feudal system live together) of his home town, the Kumano District of Kishu (the name of a feudal domain, currently known as Wakayama Prefecture). His novels after "The End of the Earth, Time of Supremacy (<i>Chi-no-Hate</i><i>, Shijo-no-Toki</i>)" which is a story about the break-up of a "roji",have been regarded as literary works about "Diaspora",which is a theme peculiar to Asia. While not wholly neglecting the later novels with Asian themes, critical studies of Nakagami's works have nevertheless failed to discuss fully the importance of these later works.</p><p> Since the latter half of the 1970s, Nakagami Kenji began to go abroad frequently. The fact that his experiences of different cultures, mainly Korean, exerted a great influence on his understanding of history and on his novels has not been discussed much. As Nakagami Kenji geographically expanded to Asia the concept of "roji", which was previously limited to his hometown of Kumano in Kisyu, various important problems concerning the spacial representation of alien cultures arose. This is all the more so, because the representation of Asia in contemporary literature cannot be seen as separated from the history of Japan's imperialistic rule of her colonies and the Great East Asian and Pacific War.</p><p> In this paper, Nakagami Kenji's experiences in Korea and his construction of space in his later novels will be discussed in relation to his view of Asia and his understanding of its history.</p>

In Korea, during the Japanese colonial period, mainly Japanese people living in Korea enjoyed making Haiku. At that time, Haiku made by those Japanese residents in Korea were called ‘Chosen Haiku’. The purpose of this research was to analyze the formation of the literary world of Chosen Haiku, and empirically locate the development of Chosen Haiku. The formation of the literary world of Chosen Haiku began in earnest in the 1910s, from 1920s to 1930s, the literary world of Chosen Haiku started to question what Chosen Haiku is. Among them, Korean haiku poets that make haiku in Japanese, with No-Sik Park focusing on them, have also appeared. This research examines the development of such Chosen haiku, including after World War II.

This research is about literature (mostly novel, poem, and memoir) of repatriates from colonial countries like Korea or Manchuria. The article will verify literary practice of repatriates from colonial countries by cross-examining literary works of same generation through media report and cultural representation.
This research focuses mainly on repatriates from Korea. Characteristics of literary practice of those repatriates were contemplated by comparing their literary works with Japanese compositions during Japanese colonial period. The result shows that social images of repatriates after 1945 were portrayed very tragically, but literary practices of repatriates were definitely being assessed with a variety of views.

This thesis tries to look into literary expressions about the Korean War erupted in 1950. The Korean War brought postwar reconstruction to Japan and at the same time the War dominated the situation of the cold war in East Asia. However literary expressions concerning the War were depicted in more complicated aspects." Solitude in the Plaza" by Yoshie Hotta might be a good example for stating this. And during that period in Hiroshima, Fukuoka and Ehime prefectures, local newspapers carried lots of poems on the theme of the Korean War and this made people create criticism against military bases development in Japan also evoke experience and memories in the former colony.
