本研究の主な目的は、（１）LCの話合い活動は中学生の英語使用にどのような影響しているか、英語使用の実態と課題を把握し、LC指導方法の改善を図ること、（２）話合い活動における英語使用の複数年調査から、LC活動における目標となる英語使用のベンチマークを各学年で設定すること、（３）英語圏のリテラシー教育の取組を日本の英語教育に応用し、技能統合的で対話的な言語活動が中心になる教授法を開発することである。新型コロナウイルスの感染状況により、研究協力校ではペア活動やグループ活動が制限される事態もあり、計画したとおりには進まなかった部分もあるが、中学校の1年生から3年生でLCの話合い活動を実施することができた。
特に、目的（１）について、中学3年生1グループの4回にわたる活動中の発話数などを分析し、中学3年生中旬における生徒４人での15分間の対話では、平均すると約913語の発話数、約107文の英語が使用されることが分かった。また、談話分析の結果として、生徒は教科書題材の英文から、自分の知識や経験、社会の出来事と関連付けて自分の考えを英語で表現していることが観察できているので、LCは主体的・対話的で深い学びを実現できる言語活動であることを英語授業研究学会誌に発表した。目的（２）については、学年末に中学2年生の話合いデータをとったばかりであり、その分析と報告を来年度に行い、中学2年生での英語使用ベンチマークを報告する予定である。中学1年生については、学年末にLCを1回行うことができたが、ベンチマークを設定するデータとしては少ないため、来年度の課題としたい。目的（３）について、話し合いを評価するためのツールを開発し、協力校で使用を開始して指導法の改善に努めた。また、学習者による質問づくりを取り入れた言語活動の提案と実践例について論文化し、大学教育実践ジャーナルに報告した。 -

In this research project, we carried out several case studies of Japanese secondary school teachers who utilized classroom English-language proficiency benchmarks for their lesson improvement and professional development. The new course of study asks teachers to incorporate proactive, interactive and authentic learning into English classes. Literature circles (LC) refer to student-led collaborative group discussions about readings and have great potential to provide a key teaching strategy to help make classes more active and communicative. The use of LC in Japanese university EFL classrooms had positive effects in enhancing students’ perception that they could improve their English skills. We suggested a procedure for introducing LC and also observed English classes using LC at the junior high school.
We demonstrated the value and power of LC especially with regard to the development of students’ communication abilities and as a way to provide a better classroom learning community. Also, we pointed out the need to explore carefully the challenges of how we can improve the quality of the students' conversations through case studies. -

Although science education has expanded its research based on child-centered learning perspectives, it has been deviating significantly from the progress of natural science which creates innovation and rapid changes in scientific research. The purpose of this research was primarily intended to: (1) rethink science learning as second language learning, (2) foster individuals who can intentionally use scientific languages in meaningful ways with regard to natural events, phenomena, and daily life beginning in childhood. As a result, several useful science teaching approaches from the second language learning researches were proposed, and new practical early childhood science learning models which combine scientific learning, language learning, and arts learning were developed and implemented; the study’s pilot examples were published.

In this research project, we developed an English-language proficiency benchmark for use in the EFL classroom. The target of the benchmark was Japanese secondary school teachers who aim to promote their students’ use of English in the language classroom. Assessment was conducted through the use of both quantitative and qualitative measures. Furthermore, we suggested ways of utilizing this benchmark for teachers’ professional development or teacher-training purposes.

This research is about the use of motivation episodes in teacher education. The researcher first collected and analyzed episode data of motivating/demotivating experiences from Japanese EFL learners and has developed theoretical models of motivating and demotivating factors. These episode data and the models were utilized to develop a program of L2 learning motivation in a teacher education course. In this program, the participants (i) reflect upon selected motivating/ demotivating experiences, (ii) share and discuss their reflections in a group, (iii) identify underlying factors, and (iv) deepen their understanding by integrating their reflection with theoretical concepts (e.g., attainment, attribution and self-determination). This case study provides important implications for pre- and in-service English teacher education, in terms of the usefulness of motivation episodes, and more generally in terms of effective ways to promote reflection on language learning experiences.

本研究は、ワーキング・メモリ(WM)が第2言語(英語)での読解プロセス、特に文章構成に関する予測(text structure prediction)にどのように関わっているかを調べたものである。この研究を通して、「リーディング転移」の問題、っまり第1言語で習得されたリーディング・スキルが第2言語(英語)リーディングヘ転移する際に、どのような制約が働いているのか、という問題の解明を意図し、英語リーディング指導のより強固な理論的基盤を構築することを目指している。
平成13年度は、前年度の詳細な文献研究に基づき、「第2言語リーディングにおける文章構成予測は第2言語ワーキング・メモリ(L2WM)容量の制約を受け、L2WM容量は第2言語処理効率(文字認識、語彙意味検索、統語解析、命題内容抽出などがどれくらい効率的に行えるか)により決定される」という仮説を検証するための実験を行なった。実験結果として次のことが観察された。(1)文章構成予測は、L2WMとの間に有意な関係を有している。対照的に、第1言語(日本語)ワーキング・メモリとの間にはそうした関係は存在しない。
(2)文章構成予測は、第2言語語彙意味判断テスト及び第2言語命題認定テストと有意な関係を持っている。他の、数字認識、文字認識、文法性判断などのテストとの間にはそうした関係は見られない。(3)L2WM容量が第2言語処理効率によって説明される比率は、(有意なものの)20%程度に過ぎず、L2WM容量が第2言語処理効率のみによって決定されるとは言い難い。
これらの結果は、「リーディング転移」の問題に関しては、第1言語リーディングで習得された知識・スキルの第2言語リーディングヘの転移において、第2言語ワーキング・メモリが制約として働いていることを示している。ワーキング・メモリ容量の決定要因については、情報処理効率以外の要因も関与していることを意味しており、この点を解明するためのさらなる研究が望まれる。 -
