In the Middle Ages, manors of Toji Temple in Kyoto were located in Niimi City, Okayama Prefecture and Yugeshima, Kamishima Town, Ehime Prefecture, and each of them contributed iron and salt to Toji Temple. However, no production sites were identified in any of the areas and there was no material evidence at all.
In this study, we surveyed and explored the Takase area in Niimi City and the Kamiyuage area in Kamijima Town. Both of which appear in the "Toji Hyakugo Document" as production areas. As a result, eight iron production stes were discovered in the Takase area and three salt production sites in the Kamiyuge area. This study reveals for the first time the traces of iron and salt production depicted in the national treasure "Toji Hyakugo Document". -

We have done the precision Iron Manufacturing Experiments during these 2 years at the Tatara iron making place, Okayama. In 2016, the experiment was carried out with supposing the Iron manufacturing technique of the Kofun period. On the other hand, the experiment of the 2nd year (2017) assumed the Ancient techniques derived from central Eurasia, especially in Korean peninsula.
After the completion of the experiments, we have successfully got the suitable samples for making a comparison of Iron Antiquities with detailed analyses of trace element compositions and multi-isotope. -

In this project, we elucidated sequences of pottery and jade articles based on their typological classification and established the chronology of the Neolithic period. Study on pottery showed that consumed food changed from rice porridge in the Hemudu Culture to steamed rice in the Liangzhu Culture, referring to ethnoarcheology and phospholipid analyses. Study on stone tools considered as tillage tools or harvest tools showed their function from the analyses of use traces and experimental archaeology. Study on jade articles showed that diffusion of Liangzhu Jade articles over a wide region triggered the prosperity of local cultures along the Yellow River. Analyses on lacquerware showed the ancient technique of lacquer coating and tree species used for the bodies.
Finally, study of archeological sites revealed the structure of the Liangzhu Site Complex and the nearby hydraulic system and deepened our understanding of urbanism and emergent rice civilization in that site complex. -

Cyprinid fish remains are excavated in large quantities from the western part of Japanese Archipelago to the basin of Yangtze. In this project, to clarify the relationship of rice cultivation and freshwater fishery during the shift to agricultural society, we examined a detailed analysis of fish remains and fishing gear. People who forced the conversion of food resources in the post-glacial period, found fish that came to lay eggs in the water ecotone, and began to use the resources of the water front, including fish and wild rice. And a set of fishery and gat hering of rice was established and then carp forming and rice cultivation developed. Technique for controlling the water associated with carp farming were diverted to paddy rice cultivation. Net fishing technology was developed in the set of fishery and rice cultivation in the Jiangsu plain and the Yangtze River basin spread to Henan and Shandong independently of the rice cultivation.

Based on archaeological investigation and interdisciplinary research on the central cities of Han and Six Dynasties, and cities of Lingnan area, the study unveils a real picture of cultural transmission and assimilation around East Asian Cultural Sphere. From three excavations conducted around LUY LAU of Jiaozhi Province, a registered historic site in Vietnam, We can see the structure of administrative centers in Red River Delta area. Over 10,000 pieces of relics were found, including metal, bricks, tiles, ceramics, wooden lacquer wares, silk, gilded copper Buddha statues with halo and Indian glass marbles etc. Local bricks and tiles production sites and workshops were also identified. Furthermore, we conducted researches on the relics and circulation of information over time within the area. It gives us a dynamic view of the movement of people and items in the way that literature cannot provide. It shows how Chinese culture and local customs were integrated and exchanged peacefully.

The aim of this archaeological study is to clarify routes of the transmission of iron smelting technique from the Near and Middle East to the eastwards and epochal change in the transmission. It became clear that iron in the Bronze Age represented by Hittite was transmitted to Central Asia via the Caucasus area in around B.C. 12th century. This is called the 1st wave of technological spread of iron. The 2nd wave indicates the eastwards tranmission from the northern coastal area of the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea, where famous Scythian flourished. The oldest technique of iron smelting in the East Asia was established on the first wave and 2nd wave didn't reach there.
It could be assumed now that spread of ironmaking technology in the Northern Eurasia was caused by lifestyle of the nomadic people who purchases iron mine. -

This project researches for Agriculture degree in Songze Neolithic culture of Changjiang rower area. Especially, we researched for the Stone plough origins of this period, through archeology and agriculture studies, we can recognize that the stone-plough is a real daily utility, and that humans started cultivating with a plough. And, through we research with plant-opal and GIS analysis, rice cultivation in this period produced more and went through consolidation of rice cultivation, with humans actively going to the marshes.

People who forced the conversion of food resources in the post-glacial period, found fish that came to lay eggs in the water ecotone, and began to use the resources of the water front, including fish and wild rice. And a set of fishery and gathering of rice was established and then carp forming and rice cultivation developed. Technique for controlling the water associated with carp farming were diverted to paddy rice cultivation. Net fishing technology was developed in the set of fishery and rice cultivation in the Jiangsu plain and the Yangtze River basin spread to Henan and Shandong independently of the rice cultivation.

Domestication of rice and the following formation process of agricultural society in China are classic archaeological topics but recently lively discussed to produce new insights with newly discovered data. We aimed at shedding light on the discussion by substantial collaborative research of archaeobotany, artifact studies and genetics. As the results, we successfully established new outlooks on wild food exploitation by early rice farmers, production/consumption systems on plant food, and dispersal of domesticated rice. The results were presented at several international conferences and published as English and Japanese articles. Furthermore, we held two international symposiums(one is by collaboration) and provided good opportunities for international information and opinion exchanges among leading scholars of early rice domestication. The symposium achievements are also published in English for further global information flow.

We examined the collections of the Chinese-Folk crafts in several Japanese museums, that were collected by the Japanese in the first half of the twentieth century. Many of the museums prepare the database for the public use today. Based on the collaborate research on the collections, each member conducted a case study of a particular topic of the objects.
