The accident risk on residential roads is higher than that of highways. Especially, the intersections on the residential roads are more dangerous because of the large number of accidents. Therefore, in order to identify the factors affecting the number of accidents per unit traffic volume (hereafter, "traffic accident risk") at the intersections, this study makes a factor analysis for the intersections in Matsuyama metropolitan area. Since there are a lot of intersections with blind corners, in addition to road structure etc. the visibility of the intersection is considered as a factor. Specifically, by combining probe data and traffic accident data, a multiple regression analysis is carried out, using the number of traffic accidents at the intersections in each area as the objective variable, and various factors including intersection visibility as explanatory variables. As a result, it is shown that the accident risk of the 4-way intersections increases where narrowed roads intersected and good and bad visible corners were mixed.

This study aims to demonstrate that driver's awareness during driving at night can be improved by attentional momentum effect. Driver's ability to be aware of pedestrians is often degraded due to the inhibition of return (hereafter, "IOR"). The IOR is the tendency that exogenous attention is suppressed toward the direction to which the driver previously referred. Previous studies have suggested that attentional momentum effect (hereafter, "AME") can relieve the effect of IOR. For example, IOR phenomenon appears when driver's exogenous attention is localized on roadside stores with high-illumination intensity. Focusing on the night-time driving, this study investigates the impact through a detection task based on dual-task setting. As a result, it was observed that the target detection was delayed under IOR condition, and the delay in target detection was improved under AME condition. This result supports that attentional momentum effect led to improve the driver's ability to be aware of objects during night time driving.

Accident risk information system aims to reduce traffic accidents by navigating drivers to the routes with lower accident risk. This study quantitatively evaluates the effect of the accident risk information provision by utilizing a dynamic traffic simulation environment – SOUND. The simulation bed is constructed to model the wide-area road network of Matsuyama, Japan. Accident risk estimation models are embedded in the simulation to calculate the timedependent route cost considering the accident risk in addition to conventional cost terms such as travel time. The simulation estimates the traffic conditions when drivers acquire the accident risk information in their route choice. The effect of the information provision system is evaluated by comparing the expected number of accidents with and without the system. The results revealed that the drivers with accident risk information prefer to use routes with lower accident risk, and the total number of accidents could reduce by up to 4%.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the attentional engagement to the traditional Japanese-style street facades by memory driven attentional capture. When walking along the traditional Japanese-style streets, anyone has an experience that their eyes glued to the traditional Japanese-style street facades. Previous studies have suggested that the attentional engagement was facilitated for similar element that visual working memory held. From these previous studies, it was hypothesized that the visual working memory of traditional Japanese-style streets might cause the attentional engagement to traditional Japanese-style street facades and this hypothesis was examined by a visual search task. The results show that the attentional engagement to the Japanese street facade was caused by memory driven attentional capture.

This study aims to demonstrate that driver's detection of a fallen object on an expressway can be improved by attentional disengagement. Driver's detection of a target often delays due to vigilance decrement, which is deterioration in the ability to keep attention to a target over a long period of time. Previous studies have suggested that instantaneous attentional disengagement from a target relieves vigilance decrement. It is considered that driver's attention tends to be located on a particular point in front for a long time which could cause vigilance decrement resulting in the delay in detection of a fallen object on an expressway. This study conducts a selective adaptation task to show that attentional disengagement relieves vigilance decrement during driving on an expressway. The response time of the disengaged condition was observed to be shorter than the engaged condition. This result suggested that attentional disengagement led to improve the driver's detection of a fallen object during driving on an expressway.

This study aims to develop traffic accident risk models for residential streets by utilising probe data. Residential streets are minor access roads in residential area for the residents to reach major arterial roads. The residential streets are not designed for heavy traffic, and thus are characterised by narrow road width and the absence of traffic lights. Nevertheless, they are often bypassed by through-traffic, due to which traffic accident risk is considered to be very high. However, the residential streets are rarely equipped with traffic sensors; traffic accident risk has not been evaluated in such minor roads, which hinders designing effective traffic safety measures. This study utilises probe vehicle information retrieved from ETC2.0 onboard equipments in order to estimate the traffic volume in the residential streets. Then, the traffic accident risks are estimated for different accident types, followed by the development of traffic accident risk estimation model based on linear regression analysis. A case study conducted in Matsuyama in Ehime prefecture revieled that the accident risk in residential areas near major arterial roads tend to be higher. The residential streets in office areas and in the areas with higher population of working ages are also identified as having higher accident risks. The findings would be useful inputs in planning the counter strategies and in prioritising the areas to be improved.

This study investigates the relationship between driving experience and generalization of driver's stopping behavior. Previous research has suggested that an acquired behavior is triggered by positive reinforcement, and the same behavior is replicated by the same trigger in any situations once it is generalized. Driving behavior is a type of acquired behaviors, and therefore it is possible that a procedure in driving is generalized by accumulating driving experience. This study aims to relate the generalization of driver's stopping behavior to the driver's driving experience by comparing the stopping behavior in real space and virtual space presented by a driving simulator. The results showed that drivers with longer driving experience performed stopping behavior based on the same positive reinforcement regardless of the situations: real space or virtual space, which suggests that their stopping behavior is generalized. On the other hand, drivers with shorter driving experience did not exhibit the generalization in their behavior.

This study aims to develop an average travel speed estimation model for signalised arterials based on the relationship between flow (Q) and speed (V). Such relationship, or the QV relationship, describes the travel speed at given flow levels, which plays crucial role in designing traffic management schemes to evaluate the traffic performance after devising the policies. On the other hand, in the state of the practice, the QV relationship of signalised arterials only relates the daily traffic volume and daily average travel speed, which is unable to capture the dynamic changes in traffic, and therefore, hinders the proper evaluation of traffic performance after the policies. This study developed the methodology to estimate the QV relationship of signalised arterials using traffic data aggregated in smaller time intervals (e.g., 15 minutes). The proposed QV relationship relates the space-mean flow and speed along a corridor by utilising multiple detectors. The travel speed estimation model was developed based on a multiple linear regression model, which defined the average travel speed using the space-mean flow, road geometry and time of day. The model exhibited sound accuracy with R2 of 0.77, and revealed the impact of road geometry and temporal difference on travel speed.

Traffic signals play a significant role in the urban transportation system. They control the movement of traffic on urban streets by determining the appropriate signal timing settings. Due to the stochastic nature of the traffic flow, deciding on the best signal timing settings is a computationally complex problem, with the result that traditional analytical methods have been found to be inadequate in dealing with real world scenarios. This issue has already been tackled using computational intelligence algorithms such as the genetic algorithm (GA). However, despite good results, GA may experience slow convergence, especially when dealing with constrained optimisation problems. To address this issue, we propose an adaptive memetic algorithm (MA) for optimising signal timings in real world urban road networks using traffic volumes derived from induction loop detectors. The proposed MA combines the strengths of GA with the exploitation power of a local search algorithm, in an adaptive manner, so as to accelerate the search process and generate high quality solutions. In this work, we propose two important techniques for improving the performance of a traditional MA. First, we use a systematic neighbourhood based simple descent algorithm as a local search to effectively exploit the search space around GA solutions. Second, to achieve a proper balance between the exploration of GA and the local search algorithm, we propose an indicator scheme to control the local search application based on the diversity and the quality of the search process. The proposed MA was tested in two different case studies for the cities of Brisbane, Australia, and Plock, Poland, using the well-known microscopic traffic simulator, AIMSUN. Results demonstrate that our MA is better than GA and traditional fixed-time traffic signal settings. Crown Copyright (C) 2017 Published by Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Traffic monitoring using Bluetooth MAC addresses has been intensively studied for a decade. Nevertheless, estimation of Origin-Destination volume is still challenging, because the detection probability is unstable and sensitive to the installation positions and environments. With the aim to reveal the factors affecting the detection probability of MAC addresses, this study conducted a series of driving tests to collect detection samples from moving Bluetooth device under various scenarios. The data was then fed in a Logistic Regression Model to estimate the contribution of the factors, such as the installation positions of the scanner and the driving speed of the experiment car, to the detection probability. The results agreed on the significance of distance and angle between the scanner and the car, as well as the car speed, as reported in preceding studies. This study further identified the contribution of driving direction and timeout duration of the scanner. The proposed model successfully estimated the detection probability with a reasonable accuracy.

The macroscopic fundamental diagram (MFD) relates space-mean density and flow. Because the MFD represents areawide network traffic performance, perimeter control strategies and networkwide traffic state estimation using the MFD concept have been studied. Most previous works used data from fixed sensors, such as inductive loops, to estimate the MFD, which can cause biased estimation in urban networks because of queue spillovers at intersections. To overcome this limitation, recent literature reported on the use of trajectory data obtained from probe vehicles. However, these studies were conducted with simulated data sets; few works have discussed the limitations of real data sets and their impact on variable estimation. This study compares two methods for estimating traffic state variables of signalized arterial sections: a method based on cumulative vehicle counts (CUPRITE) and one based on vehicle trajectory from taxi GPS logs. The comparisons reveal some characteristics of taxi trajectory data available in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. The current trajectory data have limitations in quantity (i.e., the penetration rate), because of which the traffic state variables tend to be underestimated. Nevertheless, the trajectory-based method successfully captures the features of traffic states, which suggests that the trajectories from taxis can be a good estimator for networkwide traffic states.

Loop detectors are the oldest and widely used traffic data source. On urban arterials, they are mainly installed for signal control. Recently state-of-the art Bluetooth MAC Scanners (BMS) has significantly captured the interest of stakeholders for exploiting it for area-wide traffic monitoring. Loop detectors provide flow - a fundamental traffic parameter; whereas BMS provides individual vehicle travel time between BMS stations. Hence, these two data sources complement each other, and if integrated should increase the accuracy and reliability of the traffic state estimation.
This paper proposed a model that integrates loops and BMS data for seamless travel time and density estimation for urban signalised network. The proposed model is validated using both real and simulated data and the results indicate that the accuracy of the proposed model is over 90%. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

This research aims to develop a reliable density estimation method for signalised arterials based on cumulative counts from upstream and downstream detectors. Although traffic density is a key variable for analysing network performance, its estimation is still challenging due to counting errors associated with urban arterials with mid-link sinks and sources. In order to overcome the issue, CUmulative plots and Probe Integration for Travel timE estimation (CUPRITE) is expanded for density estimation. CUPRITE reduces or cancels the counting inconsistencies when vehicles' conservation is not satisfied within a section by utilising probe vehicles' samples. The method is tested in a controlled environment, and the authors demonstrate the effectiveness of CUPRITE for density estimation in a signalised section.

The macroscopic fundamental diagram (MFD) relates space mean density and flow. The existence with dynamic features was confirmed in a congested urban network in downtown Yokohama, Japan, with a real data set. Because the MFD represents areawide network traffic performance, studies have reported on perimeter control strategies and areawide traffic state estimated with the MFD concept. However, few reports of real-world examples from signalized arterial networks are available. Data are fused from multiple sources (Bluetooth devices, loop detectors, and signal phase timing). A framework is presented for the development of the MFD for Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. Existence of the MFD in the Brisbane arterial network is confirmed. MFDs (from the entire network and several subregions) are evaluated to determine the spatial partitioning to represent network performance. The findings confirm the usefulness of appropriate network partitioning for traffic monitoring and incident detection. Future research directions are addressed.

Traffic accidents often cause lane closure, and diminish stability of travel time as well as the level of road services. On the other hand, research on the implementation of ITS services aiming at the reduction of traffic accidents has made considerable progress lately. However there has been little discussion on the benefits obtained by traffic accident reduction from the view point of travel time reliability. Therefore, in this research, relationships between traffic accidents and travel time reliability are examined, and the benefit of traffic accident reduction is calculated based on the scheduling model under travel time uncertainties. The results show the significance of traffic accident reduction for the improvement of travel time reliability. © 2011 Springer Science+Business Media, LLC.

     More details

    Event date: 2013.1

This research aims to develop a reliable density estimation method for signalised arterials based on cumulative counts from upstream and downstream detectors. Although traffic density is a key variable for analyzing network performance, its estimation is still challenging due to counting errors associated with urban arterials with mid-link sinks and sources. In order to overcome the issue, CUmulative plots and Probe Integration for Travel timE estimation (CUPRITE) is employed for density estimation. CUPRITE reduces or cancels the counting inconsistencies when vehicles' conservation is not satisfied within a section by utilizing probe vehicles' samples. The method is tested in a controlled environment, and the authors demonstrate the effectiveness of CUPRITE for density estimation in a signalised section.

The Macroscopic Fundamental Diagram (MFD) relates space-mean density and flow, and the existence with dynamic features was confirmed in congested urban network with real data set from loop detectors and taxi probes. Since the MFD represents the area-wide network traffic performances, it gives foundations for perimeter control strategies and an area traffic state estimation enabling area-based network control. However, limited works have been reported on real world example from signalised arterial network. This paper fuses data from multiple sources (Bluetooth, Loops and Signals) and develops a framework for the development of the MFD for Brisbane. Existence of the MFD in Brisbane network is confirmed. Different MFDs (from whole network and several sub regions) are evaluated to discover the spatial partitioning in network performance representation.
