The Kanji B class at Ehime University is a course designed for low-intermediate students and above. The course is conducted in small groups of students with a Japanese language volunteer and is overseen by the main instructor. This study reports the reasons behind why the students chose their &quot;My Best Sentence&quot; from a selection of sentences written during the kanji class. The results of interviews showed that both assessment by the Japanese volunteers and sentence content, which incorporates the individual personality of each student and the content the other students would find interesting, were used to select their sentence.

To support literacy learning for immigrant wives illiterate in Japanese, we interviewed long-term residents to investigate their learning readiness and needs. A tendency to easily learn basic kanji related to everyday life was observed, but it became clear that even if they could write, they were not able to recognize kanji components. The women were aware of the present need for writing skills, but were not yet aware of what they might need in the future. Using their level of readiness, it is necessary to provide support for literacy learning to meet the need for a greater command of kanji.

When teaching Japanese kanji characters to Chinese speakers, most teach reading or use of words, rarely focusing on character form. Many report the necessity of highlighting the difference between Chinese and Japanese characters, but provide no concrete instructional suggestions. The ability of Chinese speaking students, who had at least completed the elementary course, to write characters which differ in Japanese and Chinese was investigated to create material for instruction. The results revealed the problems of native language interference, and that memory of the form was affected by knowledge of vocabulary, indicating characters should be taught together with graded language instruction.

A seminar was held at Ehime University with native and non-native Japanese language teachers and students studying to be teachers of Japanese language from three partner universities. Groups, each consisting of members from all four countries, worked together to make lesson plans and do practice teaching. Differences in &#039;beliefs&#039; of the non-native students caused friction, but they managed to reach a compromise for the practice teaching presentation. Using the observations recorded of this process in the reflection reports of the Japanese students, this paper will consider the role of &#039;beliefs&#039; in language teaching.

At Ehime University we are promoting exchange with our partner institutions abroad through two-week, Japanese language and culture study programs. The goal is to promote exchange with Japanese people by incorporating Japanese volunteers in and outside the classroom for language practice and cultural experience and by home stay programs. This report will present feedback from the participating international and Japanese students to show the results so far and consider the wide application of this type of study program.

Many students of Japanese language, who are not Kanji literate, do not get enough instruction in the writing of Kanji, resulting in the formation of bad habits in the shape and form of their written characters. At Ehime University a manual prepared by language instructors for Japanese volunteers with no experience in language teaching to help these students improve their character writing is being tested. In this study, we will introduce the use of this manual and discuss the issues related to such specific instruction.

At many universities, the level and number of Japanese language classes vary with the campus. Ehime University offers Japanese classes on three campuses. On the main campus, Japanese language volunteers are actively used, but it is difficult to find enough participants for the School of Medicine classes. To solve this, a class for Japanese language volunteers was offered in the same community as the School of Medicine. As a result, although contact with the community and the number of volunteers increased, it became clear that the School of Medicine curriculum and the content of the volunteer class needed revision.

At Ehime University we are using Japanese volunteers on a one-to-one basis to support the teaching of kanji to students with no kanji background. This system has been well-received by both the students and the volunteers. In addition, a class was held in tandem for the volunteers to provide an opportunity to examine and improve skills for support in teaching kanji. In this report, I will introduce the kanji class, the class for the volunteers and the various possibilities for using volunteers to support the teaching of kanji.

The Career Development Program for Foreign Students from Asia encourages language instructors to adopt &quot;Project Based Learning (PBL)&quot; in class so that students can cultivate the skills necessary for entry into the Japanese corporate world. To prepare the groundwork for employing PBL smoothly, Ehime University has students share the roles in &quot;visitor-sessions&quot;. This study will show what the students achieved by using &quot;visitor-sessions&quot; in Japanese business language education. It will also identify problems and suggest solutions.

At Ehime University a full-time teaching staff is in charge of the management and coordination of Japanese Business education as part of the Shikoku Consortium of the Career Development Program for Foreign Students from Asia offered by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry and the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. In this report, the merits and demerits of using a full-time teaching staff and the adjustment made accordingly will be discussed. The following problems and our response to them will be described, 1) the inconvenience of holding classes on weekdays, 2) the foreign students&#039; attitude towards the classes and 3) the necessity of integrating Japanese business language education with Japanese business education.

In order to provide a better leaning environment for Japanese language students, it is necessary to expose students to people outside the classroom to experience a social and cultural environment away from the university. At Ehime University we are using home stays as a means to achieve this. At present, there is a problem that it appears that the international students are not gaining as much information about Japanese culture as expected through this experience, and using home stays effectively as a means to use the social and cultural environment in language learning requires more study.

Employing the framework developed by Hamada et al. (2006), this study examines the Japanese language learning environment for students enrolled (or formally enrolled) in the Intensive Japanese Language Course (henceforth, intensive students) and for international undergraduate students (henceforth, undergraduate students) at Ehime University. The results indicate that, for both groups, contact with compatriots plays an important role in their personal life. However, differences can be seen in their attitudes towards the importance of this contact with respect to learning Japanese. Many of the intensive students at the novice to intermediate-low level felt that contact with compatriots contributed to improving their Japanese, while the undergraduate students tended not to see a connection between this contact and Japanese language learning.

st priority of international students is often how to adjust themselves to life in Japan. The presenters introduce Ehime University&#039;s Japan Survival Course. The course&#039;s main objectives are: (1) to provide students with survival level Japanese language skills and necessary life skills, and (2) to systematically integrate the acquisition of these skills into the class. This course unifies a general support system in place to help students go about their daily lives more easily. The presenters outline the course and show how to accomplish these objectives. They also delineate ways to improve the course in the future.
