本研究は、国際共通語として英語が機能する中で、そのような英語の現状を学習者がどのように捉え、彼らの英語および第二外国語の学習動機づけにどのような影響を与えているのか、さらに、これらを踏まえた上で、英語や第二外国語を教える教員はどのようにその指導法を改善できるのかを明らかにすることを目的としている。2021度は、計画していた調査を概ね実施することができた。具体的には、半年の期間をおいた２回の質問紙およびインタビュー調査である。
第１回目の質問紙調査では、調査対象者の国際共通語としての英語に対する態度の傾向と、その態度と英語・英語以外の外国語の学習動機づけとの関係性を明らかにした。対象者は概ね英語については共通語として前向きにとらえている様子が明らかになった一方、海外の先行研究で報告されているような、英語に対する前向きな態度が英語以外の言語学習の動機づけに悪影響を与える様子は確認されなかった。
第２回目の質問紙調査では、１年間の第二外国語学習の後、概ね読む力が伸びている一方、話す力については対象者自身が「このような場面であれば〇〇語で話せる」という実感があまりないことが明らかになった。
インタビュー調査においては、大学１回生である調査対象者が、それぞれ独自・個別の理由で第二外国語を履修し、第１回目のインタビュー時には熱心に学習する様子がみられた一方、１年間の学習後、第２回目のインタビュー時には理解不足から学習意欲が低下する様子もみられた。質問紙調査では詳細がわからなかった、英語・第二外国語の学習や動機づけの様子の詳細を明らかにするとともに、質問紙調査で大きな傾向としてみられた、英語の英語以外の言語学習動機づけへの悪影響がない理由を明らかにすることができた。
これらの結果については、多言語・多文化関連の国際学会で既に発表を済ませたところであり、今後は論文の出版につなげたい。
