This study investigates how the rice farming simulation video game Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin affects interest in real-world agriculture and the inclination to start farming amidst Japan’s declining farming population. We surveyed 428 Japanese residents, including not only game players but also those who watch the game live or are merely aware of its existence. We also interviewed an individual who started rice farming after playing the game. The findings indicate that the game successfully stimulates greater interest in agriculture and somewhat motivates players to consider farming, more than just viewers or those who are aware of it. Moreover, individuals with real-life connections to agriculture, such as farming experience or professional connections, were optimistic about the transition from game to reality. The study suggests that rice farming simulation games can foster expectations of developing an interest in agriculture and potentially embarking on farming careers, demonstrating the game’s significant impact beyond entertainment.

The purposes of this research are to describe the structure of a social network of people related to the Noto Satoyama Satoumi (landscapes and seascapes) Meister (master) Training Program and to investigate the effect of the social network on their values and behaviors. This program, provided by Kanazawa University and local governments, aims to develop the human skills of people in Noto Peninsula. This study uses the results of a questionnaire survey replied to by meisters. The interesting results of this study are threefold. First, a small number of people play an important role as a hub in the social network. They have a high degree of centrality, which means that they are linked with many meisters and related people. Second, not only meisters but also other staff members of the program are included in the social network. Some of them occupy important positions in the network. Third, compared to the meisters with a nil degree of centrality, the meisters with a higher degree of centrality tend to change their own values and behaviors through interactions with other members in the social network. In particular, their sense of values related to a rural lifestyle is likely to change. We conclude that the impacts of the social network related to the program on meisters are significant and summarized by the following three concepts: provision of knowledge and techniques; expansion of the range of people’s interests; and creation of cooperative opportunities. The social network related to the program plays a critical role in fostering meisters’ activities and shaping the future of Noto peninsula.

This study explores the regional revitalization strategies in the Yusukawa district of Seiyo City, Ehime Prefecture, Japan, with a focus on the specialty tomato processing business and the Tomato Ownership Program. In the context of a national trend towards branding local specialties and utilizing non-standard agricultural products for economic development, Yusukawa has embarked on an innovative approach. This involves the processing of non-standard tomatoes and the implementation of the Tomato Ownership Program. While these initiatives represent a proactive response to the challenges faced by rural areas, comprehensive analysis of their effectiveness and impact is limited. This paper provides an in-depth examination of these initiatives, highlighting the successes and challenges encountered in the Yusukawa district. It specifically addresses the processing of non-standard tomatoes and the dynamics of the Tomato Ownership Program, suggesting improvements for the program and potential new relationships between producers and consumers.

A social science approach is needed in addition to a natural science approach when assessing the impact of climate change on a region and examining adaptation measures. A social science approach is needed in addition to a natural science approach for four reasons: (1) an overall elucidation of the impact including socioeconomic aspects, (2) an impact assessment from the perspective of the vulnerable, (3) an examination of structural adaptation measures, (4) to complement and strengthen the participation and learning of residents and businesses.

To show the effectiveness of a social science approach, this paper summarizes research findings using the social science approach, and reports on two studies. One is action research on adaptation measures for Ichida persimmon in Takamori Town, Nagano Prefecture. The other is a study on the impact of climate change on the fishing industry in the Hinase district of Bizen City, Okayama Prefecture.

These two studies include interviews and questionnaire surveys of climate change-affected producers to clarify the climate change impact structure that reflects the special circumstances of the region. In addition, the studies suggest the possibility of regional adaptation measures to be taken to improve the management structure of producers.

Since 2017, the Japanese government has been phasing out the use of non-native bumblebees as greenhouse tomato pollinators due to their ecological risks. We used an online questionnaire to investigate whether pollination methods affect consumers’ willingness to pay (WTP) for tomatoes. We found that consumers valued the use of non-native bumblebees more than hormonal treatment and native more than non-native bees. Moreover, we found that informing consumers of the ecological risks increased WTP for native bumblebees and hormonal treatment. These results suggest that pollination method labeling may help protect ecosystems from the threat of non-native species.

Since 2001, Shiga prefecture has promoted environmentally friendly agricultural products through the "Kankyo Kodawari" certification. This certification can be divided conceptually into two parts: reducing the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides, and preventing water degradation due to soil erosion from paddy fields. The former has both private and public benefits, while the latter has public benefits. We investigate the evaluation of environmentally friendly rice by residents through a choice experiment. We collected data through a mail survey with random sampling from the voters' list. The results show that environmentally friendly rice is valued about 1,000 yen/5 kg higher than conventional rice; however, that value does not stem from preventing soil erosion alone. Rather, this premium is attributable to reducing the use of fertilizers and pesticides.

This study aims to clarify the factors influencing the voluntary participation of local citizens in the control of an invasive alien species, namely Ludwigia grandiflora ssp. grandiflora. Data were collected via questionnaires distributed to the members of a nonprofit organization located close to Lake Biwa, Japan, in July 2013. Data analysis revealed that voluntary participation in the control of the invasive species was influenced not by the respondent's abstract knowledge of biodiversity, but rather by his or her specific knowledge of the species. The voluntary participation may increase, if the respondent aims to exterminate the species. Moreover, the respondent who was not habituated to solving imminent environment issues did not participate in the activity. In addition, the distance between the respondents' residents to the location of the activity inversely affected their participation.

The aim of this paper is to clarify the determinants of attitudes regarding the control of non-native species and the conservation of native species based on the results of questionnaire surveys administered to the members of a nonprofit organization in Shiga, Japan. This paper indicates that the respondent's perceived numbers of non-native and native species that need to be controlled or conserved, respectively, increase with their advancing age. Additionally, the number of non-native species perceived as needing to be controlled is influenced by beliefs in attainability—whether efforts will be rewarded with the extermination of non-native species—and knowledge of biodiversity. In each taxonomic analysis, positive attitudes regarding the control of non-native species prevail among those who are fluent in biodiversity. Furthermore, attitudes toward the control of non-native fish or waterweed are positively influenced by early experiences with fishing or shellfish gathering.

Whereas Bombus terrestris, a European bumblebee species, is necessary as a pollinator for greenhouse tomato production in Japan, the Japanese government regulates its use and it is listed as an invasive alien species under Japan's Invasive Alien Species Act. Pursuant to this law, to use the species, producers have to not only cover the apertures in their greenhouses with net, but also make efforts to prevent these bees from escaping. However, a moral hazard problem exists in that producers' behavior is not observable by the regulator, as in the case of non-point source pollution. In Hokkaido, participatory monitoring in the field yields information on the number of such bees found and captured. Hence, this study conducts a questionnaire survey for tomato producers to consider whether such monitoring would deter them from moral hazard. The result shows that the negative information may lead to the psychological punishment for the entire group of producers having collective responsibility.Key Words: moral hazard, Bombus terrestris, monitoring, non-point source pollution, collective responsibility, psychological punishment

This paper uses a contingent valuation method to investigate the economic conditions for the development of biodiversity-friendly paddy rice agriculture in terms of farmer willingness to adopt such agriculture and consumer willingness to purchase such products. We focus on the rice grown in such a manner to preserve the habitats of the indigenous fish species of Lake Biwa. We gathered the data used in our analysis from questionnaire surveys of six rural communities in Shiga Prefecture from 2010 to 2011 and obtained the following results: (i) a price premium for rice grown through biodiversity-friendly agriculture encourages farmers to adopt such practices; (ii) consumers who are familiar with biodiversity-friendly paddy rice agriculture are likely to purchase such rice. Hence, the information dissemination of such agriculture to consumers will stimulate demand; and (iii) consumers who frequently participate in community events are likely to purchase rice grown through biodiversity-friendly paddy rice agriculture. Therefore, in this context, the accumulation of social capital in any rural community that is engaged in biodiversity-friendly paddy rice agriculture contributes to the development of such agriculture.

The aim of this paper is to clarify the determinants of consumer willingness to buy biodiversity-friendly agricultural products. To this end, this study considers a Japanese case: fish-friendly rice that targets the preservation of habitat for the indigenous fish of Lake Biwa in Shiga Prefecture. We cast a spotlight on consumer characteristics identified from market segmentation based on consumer awareness and behavior and, in addition, ex ante consumer knowledge about the rice. The willingness to buy is shown to be stronger for those who are more highly concerned with agriculture, countryside and produce, those who highly evaluate the effect on the environment and ecosystem conservation provided by the fish-friendly production process, and those who have ex ante knowledge about this particular rice. As a result, in terms of policy implications, it is important to encourage consumers to purchase such products not only by informing them of environment and ecosystem conservation benefits from the fish-friendly production process but also by advertising messages that attract consumers who are more highly concerned with agriculture, the countryside, and produce.

Biodiversity-friendly farming is an innovative practice that is adopted by not only individual farmers but also rural communities as a whole. The objectives of this paper are to outline the diffusion process of the biodiversity-friendly farming adopted by rural communities, which is accompanied by collective decision-making, and to reveal which attributes of the rural community influence the adoption level of the farm ing. To this end, a case in a Japanese rural region was studied. The study concluded that the adoption level of biodiversity-friendly farming in rural communities is promoted by higher ratio of middle-aged population, higher degree of social capital accumulation through community meetings, a greater number of neighboring rural communities adopting the farming, and the sale of rice as a branded commodity.

In greenhouse tomato production, by employing non-native bumblebees as a pollinator, tomato growers benefit from labor saving in pollination work and improvement of tomato quality. However, if the non-native species escapes from their greenhouses, it may have a harmful influence on the ecosystem. Therefore, according to the Invasive Alien Species Act, tomato growers are required to take measures to prevent their escape when using this species. Since monitoring by the Ministry of the Environment alone is not sufficient to thoroughly implement this escape prevention measure, the feasibility of mutual monitoring among those growers was examined in this study. As a result of the analysis, it became clear that growers who are strongly interested in the impact of this species on the ecosystem tend to think that such mutual monitoring is feasible.

This study aims to clarify who is responsible for the costs of the prevention and control of invasive alien species, as specified in Japan’s Invasive Alien Species Act. Using specific examples of invasive alien species, this study covered the agricultural utilization of Bombus terrestris and the control of Ludwigia grandiflora ssp. grandiflora. Regarding the former, which is used as a pollinator, it was revealed that tomato producers have incentive to bear prevention costs. As for the latter, the factors governing control activities by volunteers were examined and it was found that financial support by the public administration is effective in increasing the sustainability of control activities.

The purpose of this study is to conduct empirical analyses of the diffusion of biodiversity-friendly farming. The study concluded that the adoption of biodiversity-friendly rice farming in rural communities is promoted by the fol-lowing factors: a higher degree of social capital accumulation through community meetings, a greater number of neighboring rural communities adopting the farming, and the sale of rice as a branded commodity. The study also concluded that providing information on the ecological risk, that is, the threats posed by non-native species, is effective for giving tomato producers, who use bumblebees as pollinators for green-house tomato, the incentive to substitute native species for non-native species.
