Japanese language reading ability and learning achievement of school age hearing-impaired children were examined using Comprehensive Assessment of Reading Domains (CARD) and Norm Referenced Test(NRT), a standard academic ability test.The subjects were 186 school age hearing-impaired children in a special support school (hearing impaired).
The results were as follows；
1) We obtained continuous basic data on Japanese reading ability and learning achievement of school age hearing-impaired children. 2) Japanese reading ability of school age hearing-impaired children were not lower than that of primary school children. 3) We tried to introduce “Jishobiki" learning method into a vocabulary learning program. -

We conducted four tasks for an infant mainly;accuracy of reading , visual information processes (WAVES), and syntactic task. The result of covariance structure analysis whose independent variable was score of pattern recognition task, plain figure-construction task, and syntactic task, and dependent variable was an accuracy of reading hiragana task showed scores of syntactic task and figure-construction task affected the number of correct answer of reading hiragana task directly, and score of pattern recognition task affected score of plane figure-construction task, which suggested pattern recognition task affected the number of correct answer of reading hiragana task indirectly（GFI＝.999, AGFI＝.992, RMSEA＝.000, χ2=.186, n.s.）.
Those results supported that acquisition of the reading hiragana skills in Japanese needs not only phonological process but also visual processes.
Especially visual processes may take a certain role in alphabetic stage of reading development (Frith, 1985). -

Japanese language reading ability and learning achievement of school age deaf children were examined using Comprehensive Assessment of Reading Domains (CARD) and Norm Referenced Test (NRT), a standard academic ability test. The subjects were 139 school age deaf children in a special support school (hearing impaired).
The results were as follows；
1) Japanese reading ability of deaf children were not lower than that of primary school children. 2) The Japanese reading comprehension model of deaf children were shown to be a loose linear model. 3) The results of speech recognition task did not affect reading comprehension and academic ability. 4) It was suggested that Japanese reading strategies of school age deaf children use vocabulary-dependent reading strategies. -

I investigated the reality status of children with hearing loss detected during school medical checkups in 970 schools for Special Needs Education in Japan. I received responses to my questionnaire from the nurse-teachers at 664 schools. The number of children with hearing loss who are in schools for Special Needs Education other than the school for the Deaf was 1755. Only about 80% of the nurse-teachers had reported carrying out screening audiometry in school medical checkups.
Then, I tried finger friction test to 24 severely retarded children (48 ears). As for the result of 48 ears, 41 ears showed a response to finger friction test. A comparative study on the results with finger friction test and automated-auditory brainstem response (A-ABR) was under taken on 50 severely retarded children (55 ears). As for the result of 55 ears, 41 ears were consistent.
These results were suggested that finger friction test can be used for screening audiometry of schools for Special Needs Education.
