In this paper, we investigate a blind watermarking algorithm based on a highpass filter for three-dimensional (3-D) meshes. For improving watermark detection in correlation-based watermarking, our scheme employs the highpass filter which emphasizes an impulse signal embedded as a signature into a host mesh. In the proposed method, we align the host mesh by the principal component analysis and convert from orthogonal coordinates to polar coordinates. After this preprocessing, we map the 3-D data onto a 2-D space via block segmentation and average operation, and rearrange for the 2-D data to an 1-D sequence. On the 1-D space, we apply a complex smear transform and a highpass filter. From the resulting signal, we derive the optimum complex-valued impulse signal in terms of the Euclidean norm. To generate a watermark with desirable properties, similar to a pseudonoise signal, we perform a complex desmear transform, which is the inverse system to the complex smear transform, on the complex-valued impulse signal. After reordering into the 2-D signal and 3-D mapping from the 2-D space, the watermark is embedded into the host mesh and the resulting mesh is converted to orthogonal coordinates. At the decoder, we implement an inverse process with the highpass filter for stego meshes and detect a position of the maximum value as a signature. For a 3-D Bunny model, detection rates are shown to evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm.

This paper describes a blind watermarking scheme through cyclic signal processing. Due to various rapid networks, there is a growing demand of copyright protection for multimedia data. As efficient watermarking of images, there exist two major approaches: a quantization-based method and a correlation-based method. In this paper, we proposes a correlation-based watermarking techhique of three-dimensional (3-D) polygonal models using the fast Fourier transforms (FFTs). For generating a watermark with desirable properties, similar to a pseudonoise signal, an impulse signal on a two-dimensional (2-D) space is spread through the FFT. the multiplication of a complex sinusoid signal, and the inverse FFT. This watermark, i.e., spread impulse signal, in a transform domain is converted to a spatial domain by an inverse wavelet transform, and embedded into 3-D data aligned by the principle component analysis (PCA). In the detection procedure, after realigning the watermarked mesh model through the PCA, we map the 3-D data on the 2-D space via block segmentation and averaging operation. The 2-D data are processed by the inverse system, i.e., the FFT, the division of the complex sinusoid signal, and the inverse FFT. From the resulting 2-D signal, we detect the position of the maximum value as a signature. For 3-D bunny models, detection rates and information capacity are shown to evaluate the performance of the proposed method.

This paper describes a correlation-based watermarking technique with the fast Fourier transforms (FFTs) for three-dimensional (3-D) mesh models. For generating a watermark with desirable properties, similar to a pseudonoise (PN) signal, an impulse signal on a two-dimensional (2-D) space is spread through the FFT, multiplications of a complex sinusoid signal, and the inverse FFT. This system easily incorporate a frequency selectivity property, because zero-valued components in the multiplication block prevent the energy of the impulse signal at appropriate frequencies. As a result, the proposed approach requires no additional transform, such as the discrete cosine transform and wavelet transform. Since the amount of information that can be stored in the watermark depends on the size of a spread space, the elimination of the subband transform increases a payload of the watermark in a previous paper. The watermark, i.e., spread impulse signal, is embedded into 3-D data aligned by the principle component analysis (PCA).

This paper proposes an digital watermark method using extended smear-desmearing transform and high-pass filter. In this method, the signature information is diffused throughout the series by the complex smear-desmearing transform, which makes it difficult to identify the signature information by third parties. In addition, extended smear-desmearing transform expand the series. Therefore, signature information that can be embedded increases. Then, by using high-pass filter, has become signature can be detected for the compressed image. Finally, the computational experiments, to evaluate the image quality, the amount of signature information, the resistance to compression, we show the effectiveness of the method.

This paper proposes a digital watermark method with maximum detection amplitude value of complex signature impulse. Since, the strength of the real and imaginary part of the complex signature impulse in the proposed method are determined with reference to the value of the series before embedding the signature information so that the largest amplitude at that position. Thus, this leads to improved resistance to compression. Computer simulations, we shows Detection rate at the time of signature information embedded using this method and signature detection rate of JPEG compression when subjected to varying compression, and clarify the validity of the method.

This paper describes a design method of cosine-modulated filter banks (CMFB's) for in efficient coding of images. Whereas the CMFB has advantages of low design and implementation cost, subband filters of the CMFB do not have linear phase property. This prevents from employing a symmetric extension in transformation process, and leads to a degradation of the image compression performance. However, a recently proposed smooth extension alleviates the problem with CMFB's. As a result, well-designed CMFB's can be expected to be good candidates for a transform block in image compression applications. In this paper, we present a novel design approach of regular CMFB's. After introducing a regularity constraint on lattice parameters of a prototype filter in paraunitary (PU) CMFB's, we also derive a regularity condition for perfect reconstruction (PR) CMFB's. Finally, we design regular 8-channel PUCMFB and PRCMFB by an unconstrained optimization of residual lattice parameters, and several simulation results for test images are compared with various transforms for evaluating the proposed image coder based on the CMFB's with one degree of regularity. In addition, we show a computational complexity of the designed CMFB's.

We propose a three-dimensional smear transfrom-based video watermarking method using interframe correlation. This method realizes the improvement of the signature rate of detection depending on a coefficient of correlation between the frame by using processing between the frame, processing in the frame properly. It improves quality of watermark images by embedding signatures to areas where dynamic range is reduced by wavelet transform. In the computer experiment, the proposed method improves signature rate of detection for MPEG2 compression.

The purpose of this paper is to show an another design approach of the M-band dual-tree complex wavelet transform (DTCWT). Conventionally, M-channel cosine-sine modulated filter bank has been proposed as an extension of cosine modulated filter bank. It can be easily designed by the modulation of one prototype filter. In this paper, we show that it can be regarded as an alternative DTCWT with respect to its relationship to the analyticity. In addition, we also present its shift-invariance, rich directional selectivity which are effective for the image processing. Therefore it can provide the simple design of M-band DTCWT. In this paper, these properties are verified by theoretical analysis and demonstrations.

It improves quality of watermark images by embedding signatures to areas where dynamic range is reduced by wavelet transform. This method has a high signature rate of detection due to synchronous addition when detect signatures. In the computer experiment, the proposed method increases amount of embedded information without losing the quality of watermark images.

This paper describes a transform coding technique based on M-channel perfect reconstruction filter banks with a nonlinear phase. In contrast with linear-phase filter banks, the nonlinearity provides an extra degree of freedom that can be used to design a more efficient transform. We present new lattice structures of paraunitary and perfect reconstruction (biorthogonal) filter banks, which can be implemented with a lower computational complexity and/or represented by a few free parameters, through the decomposition of the lattice blocks and the displacement across the delay block. We further discuss a smooth extension method for nonlinear-phase filter banks to obtain a nonexpansive transform. The promise of our proposed approaches is demonstrated through several design examples, extended signals and compression results.

Adaptive filers use a variety of adaptive algorithms to adjust coefficients of filter. The least mean square (LMS) algorithm categorized into gradient method is widely used in adaptive system due to low conplexities. However, there is a problem that colored input signal decreases the performance convergence of the LMS algorithm. In this paper, we propose a whitening method by the use of interleave and the smearing transform. The input signal in our approach is processed via the interleaver and smearing transform before the adaptive filtering, where the interleaving scheme is systematically designed through the m-sequence. Simulation results in a system identification context show the validity of the proposed approach.

In this paper, a novel design method of regular cosine-modulated filter banks (CMFB's) have been presented for image coding. After introducing a regularity constraint on lattice parameters of a prototype filter in paraunitary (PU) CMFB's, we derive a regularity condition for perfect reconstruction (PR) CMFB's. Finally, we design regular 8-channel 32-length PUCMFB and PRCMFB by a unconstrained optimization of residual lattice parameters, and several simulation results for test images are shown for evaluating the proposed image coder based on the CMFB's with one degree of regularity.

This paper describes a design method of two-channel orthogonal cyclic filter banks with a linear phase for image coding. In the cyclic filter bank, all arguments are interpreted modulo some integer due to the periodicity of signals. This provides more degrees of freedom in design problems. In this paper, we present a systematic method to design two-channel linear phase orthogonal cyclic filter banks with real-valued coefficients. With the aim of employing half-sample symmetric cyclic filters, we derive a condition of the magnitude response for a cyclic filter bank to satisfy the orthogonality. The orthogonal cyclic filter bank with half-sample symmetric filters, which have a nearly ideal magnitude response at discrete values of the frequency, can be designed via the proposed scheme. As one design example, we show such a linear phase orthogonal cyclic filter bank with the period L = 32. Finally, several simulations that compare the performance of our designed cyclic filter bank, the conventional cyclic filter bank and the noncyclic Daubechics 9/7-tap filter bank in image compression are illustrated to evaluate the performance of the proposed approach for images with highly detailed content.

This paper proposes a signal extension method to realize image coding by M-channel paraunitary filter banks and a lattice configuration of the latter satisfying regularity. In the. conversion code for finitely long signals such as images, nonextensional convolution is important for efficient coding without increasing the number of coded pixels. To this end, nonextensional convolution is realized in a general M-channel filter bank. Also, a signal extension method is proposed using singular value decomposition so that the extended signals are smooth. Next, in the M-channel paraunitary filter banks, a design method is proposed that is based on the lattice configuration satisfying the first-order regularity so that the DC leakage is prevented. Finally, the proposed method is applied to coding of various stationary images and the effectiveness of the method is demonstrated. (c) 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

This paper describes fast registration approaches of range images based on their multiresolution representations. In the Iterative Closest Point algorithm, which is a popular technique to register sets of 3D points, the computational complexity depends largely on the number of points representing range image. Therefore, we accelerate a range image registration by applying shape-adaptive discrete wavelet transform to range images and efficiently reducing the number of data points. In addition, we present a fast and accurate registration method, which finds the closest point to a given point hierarchically in consideration of the wavelet decomposition. Finally, we apply these techniques to the registration of actual range images and show the validity of the proposed approaches.

In this paper, a signal extension method is proposed for realization of nonextension convolution in a two-channel orthogonal FIR filter bank. Methods of performing nonextension convolution include the symmetric extension method for a linear phase filter bank and the periodic extension method applicable to an arbitrary filter bank. However, the periodic extension method is not appropriate for image compression because it becomes discontinuous at the signal edge. In this paper, for application to an orthogonal filter bank, the input signal of the decomposed filter bank is extended in such a way that the input signal in the synthesized filter bank has symmetry similar to that in the symmetric extension method. In this way, nonextension convolution is realized. In this case,. it is shown that there are degrees of freedom in the extension signals determined by the input signal and the coefficients of the decomposed filter bank. The extended signal is calculated by singularity decomposition in such a way that the extended signal becomes smooth. Finally, the proposed method is applied to the coding of static images and the effectiveness of the method is demonstrated. (C) 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

In transform-based image coding, the periodic extension has the disadvantage that it might introduce high frequency components due to the artificial discontinuities at the signal boundaries. On the other hand, the symmetric extension can't be applied to the two-channel orthogonal filter bank because linear phase is not possible. This paper describes a smooth extension method, which provides the symmetric decimated outputs of the analysis filters at the boundary, for the two-channel orthogonal filter bank to obtain nonexpansive subband signals. Then, extended signal has the flexibility under the nonexpansive condition. Therefore we can calculate the smooth extended signal by singular- value decomposition. Finally, several image coding and extended signal examples are shown to confirm the validity of the proposed approach.

In the transform-based image coding, the symmetric extension is important to obtain subband signals effectively without increasing the total number of signal. However in the case of the symmetric extension, subband filters have to be (anti-)symmetric. This means that the linear phase property is strict constraint on filters' impulse response for the symmetric extension. For the other method of the signal extension, the periodic extension is implemented. While it can be applied to any filters, it introduces artificial discontinuities at the signal boundaries.
In this paper, we present a smooth extension for M-channel filterbanks to implement nonexpansive decomposition. First, we derive a condition for solving the coefficient expansion problem. Second, we calculate a smooth extended signal under the condition by singular value decomposition. Finally, we design 8 channel 16 tap paraunitary filterbank using lattice structure, and several image coding and extended signal examples are shown to confirm the validity of the proposed approach.

Wavelet packets represent an elegant generalization of the wavelet transform, capable of providing arbitrary frequency resolution to meet a signal's spectral behaviors. Recent research advances have shown that wavelet-based image compression techniques offer several advantages over traditional techniques in terms of progressive transmission capability and compression efficiency. The embedded compression techniques - tree-structured coding techniques, such as embedded zerotree wavelet (EZW) and set partitioning in hierarchical trees (SPIHT), and quadtree-structured coding techniques, such as wavelet quadtree (WQT), multigrid embedded (MGE) and EZW based on intraband partitioning (EZW-IP), - demonstrate the competitive performance of wavelet based compression schemes.
This paper describes the wavelet packet algorithm which makes it suited to subsequent quadtree-based embedded image coders, such as EZW-IP. In our technique, the hierarchical sums of maximum magnitude of each quadtree node role as the decomposition criterion. The simulation results for various images show that the proposed algorithm gives a better coding efficiency than the octave-band decomposition.

This study focuses on image coding and digital watermarking via cyclic signal processing. Main contributions of this work are three-fold : 1) an image compression technique based on a cosine-modulated filter bank, 2) a blind watermarking technique of three dimensional meshes, and 3) a quadtree-based algorithm for image coding. I presented the aforementioned approaches and demonstrated their validity.
