The Gandhian activists in the Uttarakhand region of India have tried to revive the Gandhian organization after its stagnation period after the 1990s, and there have been some signs of reactivation in the 2010s. Schools and dormitories run by Gandhian activists have been deeply rooted in the community due to generational changes such as former students becoming leaders or sending their children to the same school or dormitory. The Gandhian activists’ initiatives for the conservation and utilization of various indigenous species of traditional millets and beans have attracted attention as a model for sustainable agriculture.

Through 3-years of field work, the researchers in our project have discovered many examples of ‘post-development’ which have not been previously recognised. Ikegame has found, for example, a case in which a guru enabled irrigation project in a drought prone area. Tanabe has recognised ‘the politics of subjectivation’ in a tribal area where NGOs encouraged development and education and reconnected tribal populations into the mainstream. Ishizaka has researched the growing influence of ‘natural farming’, that has originated in Japan, as an alternative farming method in India. Takemura has traced a history of new ‘national tradition’ promoted by Tamil migrants in Singapore.

This research project aimed to investigate the changes of contemporary Indian society by focusing on the elevation of people from the lower strata and the rise and presence of local leaders among them. In particular, we focused on: 1) the belief in the “Sants,” religious figures who belonged to or had relationships within the lower strata communities, 2) the economic elevation of the people from the lower strata who started their own businesses, 3) Public Interest Litigation (PIL) activities by those in the elite class, such as lawyers and social activists, about the rights and challenges of the people in the lower strata, and 4) the ideology and thoughts of national and local leaders that have influenced the people and the movements.
The changes of the political, economic, and religious situations of those in the lower strata and the changing circumstances in society are interconnected, and this tendency could lead to a fundamental transformation of society as a whole. -

This study attempts to establish a historical source of Indian democracy by examining the influence of John Dewey in the development of the thought of B. R. Ambedkar. After his study at Colombia University, Ambedkar repeatedly acknowledged his intellectual debts to Dewey's ideas on democracy, education and society. On the other hand, Ambedkar developed his own vision of Indian history and society, by which to set the agenda for Indian democracy. He applied Dewey's concept of associated living, to argue for the historical specificity of the caste system and condemn the anti-social behavior, especially against the Dalits. He asserted that such a social relationship was not inherent in India.
Although the development of associational life remained weak till long after his death, it is clear today that the increasingly active participation of backward castes and Dalits in the spheres of education and politics has become one of the main characteristics of Indian democracy. -

This research project aimed at developing a new International Relations theory (IRT) by adopting the accumulated knowledge of regional studies. We organized an international symposium every year. However, construction of new IRT has not been completed yet after the period of research. This was mainly because of the difficulty we encounter in the theorization process, and we presume a continuous effort is essential in order to accomplish the initial purpose. What seems imperative in this context is some philosophical concepts including time, space, language, and so forth, and it became evident a further research on these concepts are prerequisite for linking regional studies and IRT. Concrete research outcome is an edited volume forthcoming from Routledge.

This project had been working on clarifying how people in South Asian countries such as India and Nepal have been democratically participating in politics. It had especially paid attention to relationships between laws and concepts of rights such as human rights and citizenship, and showed how these relationships have been influencing the constructions and organizations of the legal orders in such countries. Through these focuses, this project successfully shows the dynamics in contemporary South Asian countries and how people there live under the South Asian legal orders.

This research project aims to design the methodology for evaluating those aspects, which contribute to ensuring the sustainable humanosphere, in environmental movements. We picked up the Chipko (forest protection) movement and the Anti-Tehri dam Movement as case studies. The outcomes of this research project will be published as a monograph. As for the Chipko movement, we first focused on the transformation of forest management policy in the Uttarakhand, and then, analyzed how the movement contributed to the transformation. As a result, we revealed that, for example, the expulsion of the non-local logging companies from the region was one of the main achievement of the movement.

Nearly 20 Japanese researchers on Indian politics and society jointly but separately analyzed the Indian development of devolution of power and state autonomy. Some results of research were presented at the Western Congress of 2015 Japan Association of Asian Studies and later published in 62-4 of its academic journal, Asian Studies, in which Indian politics is argued not only as a national politics but also as the comparative politics between its composite states. Thus, its devolution of power to the state level, a development politically achieved by the people, made it possible to attain loose but stable national integration, which can be understood as a contribution of studies on Indian politics to the political science in general.
This result had a great impact on Indian researchers through the international seminar held at Institute for Social and Economic Change, Bangalore, and thus paved the way for the further studies through international joint research in the future. -

We argue that there is a South Asian path of development and democratization.
Four perspectives are suggested in order to understand contemporary India. It is not a normative evaluation but an attempt to understand present India from within regional history and in globally comparative terms.

This study attempted to establish a historical context in which modern Indian political thought and political and social movements took place under the leadership of Gandhi and Ambedkar. The hypothesis that emerged from those scholars who joined this study, ranging from Gandhian scholars to researchers of the Dalit Movements, is that both men sought a society, which would be equal in substance, while accommodating the diversity of language, ethnicity and especially religion. While Gandhi achieved the elimination of international discrimination through independence to a large extent, Ambedkar tried to eliminate domestic discrimination through the abolition of the caste system. He attempted to show the way to an equal society, which would go beyond the Hinduism which underpinned the caste system, through his own conversion to Buddhism.

This research project aims to clarify the major characteristics of Indian social movements. Each of the eleven members of this project team analyzed a case study from the postcolonialist perspective and focused on the relationship between democratic institutions and social movements in India. The case studies reveal that the development of Indian social movements was intertwined with the dynamics of alignment and division of social groups, such as castes, and that many movements in the postcolonial era originated in the colonial era.
