This article examines generational continuity and kinship patterns in Willingham (England) between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries and in Kainishiojiri (Japan) in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. In Willingham few, families continued to survive in a given locality for more than a couple of generations it? the male line. Yet at the same time local testators left bequests to a wide range of kin in their wills, indicating that, despite the mobility of the population, kinship ties remained important and were acknowledged. For Kami-shiojiri, the almost continuous series of Shumon Aratame-cho (religious faith registers) reveals a gradual change towards smaller and simpler household structures (Ie). In addition, occasional abrupt increases in the numbers of households and in the numbers of messuages (dwelling units) imply that the community as a whole and/or the local overlord did sometimes intervene to reconstruct sections of the village economy and the use of household labour. Households in Kami-shiojiri were larger and more complex than those in England and the population was much more stable, with the mobility irate about hall that reported for England. The extent of variation in inheritance patterns within both populations is also discussed, showing that some families persisted for several generations in Willingham and that in Kami-shiojiri more than a third of cases of change of headship of the household, involved a suecessor who was not the eldest son of the previous head.

• Bunke(Stemmed Family)and Kin Relationships in Kami-shiojiri, Ueda, Nagano:: from the group of 'cousins' to individuals’ cousins

Journal of Rural Studies(1994) 11 ( 1 ) 1 - 12 2004

Language:Japanese Publisher:JAPANESE ASSOCIATION FOR RURAL STUDIES

This article aims to clarify the reality of bunke (stemming and stemmed family branch) in an early modern Japanese village, using the database of various documents including the Shumon Aratame-cho(Religious Faith Registers) and family trees from Kami-shiojiri, Ueda, Nagano.
Compared to the results of other studies, Kami-shiojiri Shumon Aratame-cho indicates that the bunkes by the second and third sons account for less than one tenth of the total of 94 cases and ‘cousins’ account for more than two fifths. The current article has found that, regarding the ‘cousins’ on the Shumon Aratame-cho who became bunke, only one third of the total are real cousins. The others are 5 and more degrees apart, i.e. the fathers or even grandfathers were cousins. Therefore, referring to the family trees, the bunkes had been set up in the previous generation and there are often generation gaps between the Shumon Aratame-cho and family trees for the timing of the bunkes. This suggests that they had been substantially stemmed for they were independent enough. The family trees as informal documents recorded such a reality. However, the bunkes were not established enough to be independent as an administrative unit and the Shumon Aratame-cho, as more formal documents, do not show them. Nevertheless, over some generations, they became economically independent enough to be considered administratively independent of the village society and stemmed on the Shumon Aratame-cho, too. Since bunkes were informal, they came in different circumstances and the contemporaries made some notes on them. To understand bunkes requires cross-referencing with the Shumon Aratame-cho, family trees and other such documents, for the reality can be discerned between these various documents.

• The Cross-reference of the Families in the Family Trees and in the Religious Faith Registers:: Kinship Relationships, Pedigrees and Generation Continuity in Kami-shiojiri

TAKAHASHI Motoyasu

Journal of Rural Studies(1994) 10 ( 1 ) 1 - 15 2003

More details

Language:Japanese Publisher:JAPANESE ASSOCIATION FOR RURAL STUDIES

This article uses the original database mainly based on the relatively less used documents of family trees as well as the well-used documents of Shumon Aaratame-cho(Religious Faith Registers), in order to understand the realities of the kin-family relationships and generation continuity in Kami-shiojiri, Ueda(Nagano Prefecture). Although there have been studies based on the Shumon Aratame-cho database, there seem to be few databases which include the family tree data. This is partly due to the lower credence of family trees as historical evidence. However, Kami-shiojiri provides a family tree complex drawn by a contemporary village members who know the village family history and used village administrative documents. Since there has not been any research based on not only Shumon Aratame-cho but also family trees, such research would provide a new framework for the analysis, and new data on the family and kin relationships in early modern village society.
From the viewpoint of family, while the Shumon Aratame-cho records the more formal ‘family’, details, the family trees recorded more informal ‘family’ details. It appears that there is a qualitative difference when it comes to understanding and comparing the reality of Ie in the two documents. Regarding the family data in the Shumon Aratame-cho, more or less 60% of the unit members are also identified in the family trees. The former does not necessarily show the family or household as a unit. One unit denotes a patron of the temple or shrine in the village and the head of the household as the representative. Therefore, the unit head is not always the head of the household or family. Regarding the inheritance and Bunke (stemming branches) in the database appeared to change in the period depending on the individual circumstances of the families and kin networks. Furthermore, the cross-reference of Gonin-gumi ( ‘Frankpledge’ ) and family trees shows that the members are in accordance, as tendency. It suggests that the logic of residence affects the daily life and as a result family lines.

A purpose of this research is to elucidate the structure and its function of the rural communality in the formative period of the market economy. To do this, we created the three-layer structure model of communality from a preceding case study of 19th Century rural village in Japan (ex-Kami-Shiojiri, Ueda City, Nagano Prefecture). Using this three-layer structure model, we carried some out on-site interviews, official documented data survey, exhaustive survey (250 samples), and gathered rich quantitative and qualitative information of Desa Sekumpl, Bali, Indonesia. The result of the analysis are as follows. First, we clarify some typical properties of rural communality in Bali. Second, we found those rapid reorganization under the recent market economy expansion (particularly commercial crop production and tourism). Third, we also found the external expansion of the rural communal system from old villages. Finally, we clarified both similarity and differences between Japan and Bali.

This research project finds that it is possible for European society to understand 'Ie' as Japanese original historical existence, by way of historical comparisons focusing on family budget. Throughout the project, the research team has found many unknown and untouched documents. The data from the newly found documents in Kami-shiojiri, Ueda, Nagano provide evidence of the formation of the family budget as well as the beginning of family branches of family unions in the mid-eighteenth century. The growth of the silkworm egg industry in the village and the area enabled this formation. By the development of the market economy, the European family and household show chronological changes in consumption with the regional or national variations, while the Japanese cases clearly express the formation of the family budget.

This study had problems which reveal the regional uniqueness and consider the homogeneity of land use in villages in the late Edo period. In this time period, especially we could investigate into the land use of the shiojiri village in Shinshu Ueda Han domain and of the nakagoya village in Echigo province.
As a result, we found the different land use, depending on the natural environment, governance structure, economic activities, and the rate of development in market economy. Additionally, Land ownership and land use had been handling of early modern society. We have made it appear that the land ownership and land use in different area had a similarity in that regard.

This is a historical practical study of labour migration networks within the within regions, in order to clarify the reality of labour organizations and labour markets in the transition to the market economy, in the early modern societies of Japan and England. This study deals with servants in husbandry as subject matter in the relatively wider area of the region, beyond the limits of the village parish. As a result, we have confirmed early modern Japanese and English rural regions are particularly suitable fields to understand servants working in husbandry set in their own historical contexts including the genealogical. The realities of labour organizations and labour markets in early modern Japanese and English villages have been more clarified and provide some clues to trace back the process of the formation of modern society by industrialization.

In spite of its universality, the value of genealogical information, in particular family trees, has been underestimated as historical evidence. This project aims to reconstitute the family trees complex on a 3D coordinate axis. This has been done by putting the family trees and genealogical information within the boundaries of the village or regional communities and then added data from socio-economic history. In order to understand genealogical information adequately, it is placed in its social context rather than simply dealing with a single family line. This research project makes the international comparison of genealogical patterns', in particular for the villagers in the early modern and modern period about whom there is insufficient information.

This project was the historiographical study that compared the village structure of England and northwest Germany in 16-18 centuries with the village structure of Japan in 17-19 centuries. The criteria model of comparing was the monographic work of Kami-Shiojiri village in Japan. This study resulted as follows; firstly, it is the serious problem that the shortage of historical materials restricted our fact-finding work and interfered to access the detailed actual situation of rural communities in England in northwest Germany. Secondly, the historical social systems and organizations, such as "village" or "mark community" had been considered as communities for a long time, were not actually the communal system I themselves. It is necessary to confirm these conceptions by the re-examination of historical materials such as "family." There are many important subjects to be resolved such as "relative network" and "servant system" in early modern England and "irrigation association" in northwest Germany.

This study empirically focuses on the characteristic of land ownership in Japanese early modern village through an examination of the land redistribution practices in Niigata prefecture. On the basis of case study about Kamishiojiri village, we proceeded with the documentary search of villages in the Kanbara plain, which had the land redistribution practices, for example Nakagohya village. And we begin to sink in that the land redistribution practices which had been regarded as community land ownership were involved with the local natural environment and the structure of villages.

This research project has been engaged in the 'parallel and contrast' study of two rural societies, one in England and one in Japan, in the period of the formation of the market economy, in other words the early modern period. The study is based on two village societies namely Willingham, Cambs., U.K. and Kami-shiojiri, Ueda, Nagano, Japan. It comprehensively analyses, as well as contrasts and parallels, the changes in the ordinary daily productive activities and the development of the responses to extra-ordinary natural disasters such as famines and bad harvests. Work in each research field has shown that social and economic organisations revealed their communality at the everyday level and there are very similar features which unite all the different activities carried out in times of natural disaster. The famines and other disasters were severely affected the villagers and these results also reveal the responses of the landlords and governments to such overwhelming circumstances.

This project is a 'parallel and contrast' study of the use of the natural environment and resources in early modern villages, in particular focusing on the utilisation of the fields and commons in English and Japanese rural societies in the period of the growth of the market economy. Recently economic historians have been paying more attention to the environment, against the background of the general increase in global interest in environmental issues. However, we have few empirical studies in on how the lands were actually used including the transformation of land (rice paddy), the clearance of the mountains for cultivation or the use of land in the mountains. Such development of the cultivated land is closely connected with the market economy, and it would be possible to make a comparison with English villages including Willingham, Cambs. where we have already established a comprehensive historical database, from the environmental view. This micro-study has therefore aimed to focus on land usage in Kami-shiojiri, Ueda, Nagano. Having gained as many documents, maps, aerial photographs going back as far as possible, we have completed a database on land use and the social and economic history of the land as well as the commons as part of the landscape factors. In the eighteenth century, one third of the village's cultivated land was changed from rice paddies to mulberry fields. This seems to have been attributable to the development of the silk industries centerd on the silk worm eggs industry encouraged by the national market expansion of this period.
As a result of the research project, the group has uncovered several collections of documents including the collection of documents, approximately 10,000 units of documents belonging to Mr.Ryuuichi Sato at Kami-shiojiri. The Satos have been considered the leading member of the village. Also we have found the almost unknown data set of the Kamishiojiri housings which had been compiled by Professor Kazuo Yamazaki's group at Kogakuin University.
Currently, the group is preparing the publication of the 3 volumes of the monograph of Kami-shiojiri in English and Japanese. In addition to the monographs, we are comparing the English villages, in particular Willingham, from the various perspectives provided by the current research.

This study is the historical comparative research of the Japanese, England and Indonesian [Bali] society in the emerging process of the market economy. Every country has the historical process from communal society to market economy one. In those process there were many rural and town people thrown in the dynamic change of the market economizing. We have lots of questions what kind of reactions they did for the purpose of defending their unstable livelihood and what kind of differences they formed in order to make new economic condition. We answered these question with the view of the communality and the historical contrast. We select the 3 areas [the Ueda of Japan, the Cambridge of England and the Bali of Indonesia] as the research fields. The research targets were the various community organizations and network organizations.
Our conclusions are as follows ; 1 the socio-historical character of rural community in the early modern Japan changed over from the pre-modem community to modem neighborhood association. a)The rural community had the four-layered structure of communality [i.e. the layer of administration, kinship family group, economical association and daily life association]. b)The entity of the communality was various social relationship instead of the rural administrative organization. The social relationship included many type of le-cooperation and networks such like as Kinship family group and played the important role like as the case of land or estate transaction. 2 The community character of Bali and Cambridge was different from Ueda, Japan. From the criteria of Japan, the community of the 17th Centuries' England was almost had lost. But we found out the fact that the communality of commons actually worked within the household and village. The communality in the Bali which market economizing process is proceeding shows the mixture of the traditional and the new one.

This project is a historical approach to the parallel and contrast study of Japanese and English villages. Our intention is to contrast the changes of Japanese and English village societies in a historical context, using various approaches according to the documents available. Two villages have been chosen, Willingham, Cambs.in England and Kami-shiojiri, Nagano Prefecture (currently belonging to Ueda-city) in Japan. This parallel and contrast study focuses on how people adapted the skills and techniques to their daily life and developed their economy.
The research group uses the original database mainly based on the relatively less used documents of family trees as well as the well-used documents of Shumon On-aratame-cho (Religious Faith Registers), in order to understand the realities of the kin-family relationships and generation continuity in Kami-shiojiri in comparison with Willingham whose data base has also been completed. Furthermore, the group succeeded in reconstructing the social and economic history based on the geographical data. Through the fieldwork and document research, the assessment of such reconstruction results have proceeded. The subjects of the analysis cover multiple aspects including the structure of village and kin relationships of both Japanese and English rural societies, the relationship between market economy and villages, the functions and activities of social and economic organisations and even the administrative organisations of Gonin-gumi (counterpart of English frankpledge) and voluntary associations of kou and mujin (village religious guilds and private financial networks) which have not formerly been systematically researched.
As a historical parallel and contrast study, this project reveals an original view of the market economy society shedding light on the features of landscape and village society, demography and kin relationships, organisations of the agriculture and silkworm egg industry, land and finance, irrigation and mountain use, religious organisations and various aspects of daily life. The details will be found in the book published in both Japanese and English.

The aim of this research was the analysis of village community changing process which was influenced by Sandane (silkworm eggs) produce and trade. The village we investigated was Kamishiojiri-Mura in Ueda (now, Ueda City in Nagano Prefecture) which was famous for its silkworm farming and trading in the late Tokugawa Era. In spite of some document-trouble, this research succeeded to make clear the structure changing process of this village community which was consisted of peasants' association (Ie-Mura Syakai). These research results are summarized as follows ; 1) The peasants (Hyakusho) in this village embarked themselves in silkworm egg trading in the latter half of 18th century. Their trading range was the whole of east Japan area and its core field was Kanto region. Until the end of 18th century the number of Sandane trader grew into 15% of the village population. 2) Sandane traders made various groups in their merchandising. In early years such groups were Honke-Bunke kinship groups (Dozokudan). As the time has passed traders made their own group which was called Shinmei-Ko like merchant guild in order to keep their market order. 3) In 1830s Kamishiojiri-Mura became the Sandane trading center and became the main Sandane production village at this area. 4) From the demographic viewpoint Kamishiojiri-Mura in the Tokugawa Era was a stagnated village because the population increased only 5% within one hundred years. The number of families, however, increased double in the same period. This explosive increase of families caused by the opulent peasants made their wealth through their Sandane produce and trading. These new opulent peasants changed the order in this village in the 1860's. 5) From the 18th to 19th century the Ie-Mura association in this village changed itself to the new social relationship adapted to market economy. This research revealed the essential framework of this change as a result.
