This study elucidates how factors, such as lifestyle attributes, feelings after discovering their pregnancy, and family relationships of women at the time they were issued a Maternal and Child Health Handbook, affect postpartum depression. A total of 621 women responded to a questionnaire at the time of Maternal and Child Health Handbook issuance. The study used a retrospective longitudinal design to analyze the responses of 410 women who were matched after completing a subsequent postpartum questionnaire. We found that the items "presence of work," "presence of friends willing to provide advice," and "feelings of stress in life when the Maternal and Child Health Handbook was issued" were either significantly correlated with the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) score, or that a correlation could be predicted even though this was not significant. The images of fathers as interfering and of mothers as caring were also associated with postpartum depression. It is said to be important to take measures from early pregnancy to prevent postpartum depression from the viewpoint of preventing abuse, and it may be helpful to ask about women's living environments and support frameworks in early pregnancy, perinatal stress, and the environment in which they were brought up, particularly their images of fatherhood and motherhood, and thereby guide them to support. Our study suggests that emphasizing these items during screening and providing support may help prevent postpartum depression and abuse in the future.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of a health education intervention conducting using a feedback leaflet including personal data in the initial survey on health related quality of life (QOL), depression, menopausal symptoms, and role burden<br>Methods: A total of 113 middle-aged female workers were randomly assigned to an intervention (n=57) and control group (n=56). An educational intervention was conducted using feedback leaflet pertaining to the individual data obtained from the initial survey. The following conditions were detected from the survey health related QOL (medical outcomes study-short form-36(SF-36)), depression (Center for Epidemiologic Study Depression Scale (CES-D)), menopausal symptoms (Kupperman Index), and role burden related to housekeeping or work (visual analogue scales (VAS)) measured at baseline, after three months.<br>Results: The educational intervention did not improve all mental and physical aspects of the health related QOL (SF-36) and other outcomes in 108 females. However, among those who belonged to the depression group, the intervention group (n=10) showed an improvement as compared to the control group (n=10) on the role physical scale in eight subdomain SF-36 scores (P=0.03).<br>Conclusion: The health education intervention using a feedback leaflet can be effective among those who are in a state of depression.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of educational efforts on the depressive state by using a leaflet and feeding back the findings in the initial survey. Methods: A questionnaire survey was conducted in August, 2006 in full-time female workers (aged 40-65) employed in 5 companies in Tokyo. We made a leaflet that showed the score of each personal stress coping characteristics and the depressed state, related factors of depression obtained from the whole survey, matters that require attention of the everyday life for an applicant based on these results and carried out a education intervention with a leaflet in March, 2007. Then, a follow-up survey was conducted in November, 2007. The questionnaire was composed of items including baseline characteristics, menopausal symptoms, a stress coping scale (BSCP) and a depression scale (CES-D) were also unitized. Results: The subjects of the survey were 252. An education effort was carried out in 129. the followup survey were collected from 84. An educational effort showed an improvement in the group with a depressed state (P<0.004). Moreover, the no-depression group showed a decrease in the feeling of the burden of housekeeping (P<0.001). The group who was in the depressed state in both surveys showed significantly high scores of "a cold feeling of the waist, hands and feet" and "breathlessness and palpitations" compared with the other groups (an improved group and no-depression group) (P<0.01). Moreover, the feelling of the burden of housekeeping or work was also significantly high (P<0.01). Conclusion: An education method that investigates depression in middle-aged female workers and feeds back the results using a leaflet about the depression may be effective in people in a depressed state, and may have good influences on reducing adverse feelings of housekeeping burdens in those who are not depressed.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to examine the trend of health education to general menopause women in the literature for the past ten years.<BR>Methods: Databases including the ERIC database, the PubMed database, a Japanese database GeNii, CiNii, and &ldquo;Igaku-chuo-zasshi&rdquo; were searched for articles in the approximately past ten years from 1997 to 2007 using keywords of &ldquo;menopause&rdquo; and &ldquo;education&rdquo;. Then, the studies in patientsand testees and the studies of therapeutic purposes were excluded and the intervention studies ongeneral women in menopause were analyzed.<BR>Results: There were 19 overseas articles. There main issues were dietary counseling such as low fat diet for obesity and osteoporosis, information about bone density and muscular strength and exercises that paid an attention to menopausal symptoms. In addition, there was a study on the information about health promotion after menopause. There were 8 Japanese articles. There was an intervention study of exercise with spa treatment or nutrition education. As an effective health support for behavior modification and menopausal affirmative recognition, a coping strategy for menopausal symptoms, an offer of complex information and educational supports based on self-care has been presented. Health education taking account of times, methods such as computers or documents and places may raise satisfaction to determine healthy action by oneself, which suggested to increase one's knowledge.<BR>Conclusion: The future education for general menopausal women have to be based on a programs aiming at self-capability and include exercise, nutrition and complex information taking account of times, methods and places.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between occupation and menopausal symptoms in middle-aged women. Then, we tried to detect a group of subjects especially requiring health education, and reviewed problems involving the education. Methods: The subject were women from 40 to 65 years old. We invited public participation from mothers of women's college students and appropriate persons living in the suburbs of the metropolitan area. Consent to participate in this study was obtained from 220 women, to whom a self-answering questionnaires were distributed. The contents were characteristics, lifestyles, health information acquisition methods, health consultation partners, future healthy insecurity, and menopausal symptoms. Menopausal symptoms were assessed using an easy table of reference (SMI). We also searched scores of the SMI in a Japanese medical database "Igaku-chuo-zasshi" for comparison. Results: The SMI score was similar to those of general women in the previous reports. A significant difference was observed in the SMI score among the five different occupational groups (p=0.049). Among them, by each symptom distinction, the score in the self-employed people group was significantly high in comparison with the other groups, especially in the mental condition such as "she is easy to get angry and 1 am irritated", "we worry over and over again or it becoming melancholic", and "frequent occurrence of headache, dizziness and nausea". Conclusions: A significant difference was observed in the SMI score among the five different occupational groups. Health support for middle-aged women is important especially to those in self-employment.

<b>Background</b><br>&nbsp;In recent years, inbound tourists to Japan are increasing. Although they rarely suffer diseases or injuries during travels, they may feel anxiety for medical services in foreign countries. This study was aimed to consider how inbound tourists visiting Japan feel about Japanese medical cares.<br><b>Methods</b><br>&nbsp;Inbound tourists who came to the Tokyo Sightseeing Information Center were investigated. The questionnaire composed of 12 items relating to Japanese medical cares and levels was made in three languages; English, Chinese and Korean.<br><b>Results</b><br>&nbsp;A total of 163 tourists including 98 English speakers, 39 Korean speakers and 26 Chinese speakers were enrolled in the study. (1) Native English speakers had a high anxiety about the communication with Japanese medical staffs (p<0.001). (2) Chinese and Korean speakers subjective estimated the Japanese medical level low (p <0.001). (3) Chinese and Korean speakers had a high anxiety for medical costs while traveling (p<0.001). (4) In a case of emergency, English speakers mostly &ldquo;look for a drugstore and a hospital&rdquo;, while Chinese and Korean speakers mostly &ldquo;contact a travel agency and a tour conductor&rdquo;.<br><b>Conclusion</b><br>&nbsp;Considering foreign tourists' needs vary with their nationality and culture, Medical staffs should support them to have desired medical care in Japan.

The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of chocolate ingestion before the practice of computer operation on fatigue after the practice. Investigation was conducted in the information processing practice carried out for 3 hours using a personal computer. The subjects were 45 student nurses, who were divided randomly into a chocolate group, a brown sugar confectionery group and a control group. All the subjects replied to a survey form that asked subjective symptoms of the present fatigue before a practice. Then, the subjects took chocolate or brown sugar confectionery, and the control group practiced without taking anything. After the end of practice, all subjects replied to another form of the same contents as the first one. The feeling of fatigue before a practice was low in the chocolate group (p<0.05). Comparing fatigue before and after the computer practice, the chocolate group were carried on concentration (p<0.05). Furthermore, when the sweet had not been taken in less than 8 hours of the practice, the irritations and psychological fatigue were inhibited in chocolate group (p<0.05). From these results, the chocolate ingestion before work may have some effects on the maintenance of concentration and mental stability.
