One of the conspicuous features of &ldquo;village development&rdquo; (<i>pembangunan masyarakat desa</i>) under the New Order is the mushrooming of various types of groups and organizations at the village level. These groups were formed as intermediaries to promote villagers' &ldquo;participation&rdquo; in the government development programs. <br>&emsp;Rural Java is one of the most advanced areas in &ldquo;village development&rdquo; in Indonesia. In K village in central Java, where I conducted a year of fieldwork in 1994/95, more than 140 groups were identified inside the village of about 900 households, and more than 80 percent of the groups were those introduced by the government during the New Order. Especially since the late 1980s, the number of groups has rapidly increased. At the time of my fieldwork, the village was highly organized, showing a very different complexion from the Javanese village of the 1950s, which Clifford Geertz characterized as &ldquo;formless, &rdquo; &ldquo;vague, &rdquo; &ldquo;loose, &rdquo; and unable &ldquo;to cooperate or to organize anything effectively.&rdquo; <br>&emsp;Based on the field data obtained in K village in 1994/95, this paper attempts to describe dynamic relations between the government and village community as reflected in the activities of the government-initiated village-based organizations, and to reveal the characteristics of the New Order's &ldquo;village development&rdquo; seen at the village level. <br>&emsp;First, I identify all the groups that existed in K village in 1994/95 and examine the degree of villagers' participation by taking one of the hamlets as a case. To put the situation in 1994/95 into perspective, the history of group activities in the village is reconstructed through oral histories. The following four points are discussed as remarkable features of group activities : 1) villagers' mobilization for political events, such as events for Golkar, the ruling party under the New Order, 2) unending elaboration and complication of organizational administrative technique, 3) patterned and routinized group meetings, and 4) development of rotating saving and credit activities (<i>arisan</i> etc.). Under strong pressure for continued realization of &ldquo;development&rdquo; under the New Order, the village has, I argue, fallen into a state that can be expressed as &ldquo;organizational involution, &rdquo; which is characterized by &ldquo;increasing tenacity of basic pattern; internal elaboration and ornateness; technical hairsplitting, and unending virtuosity.&rdquo; For comparison, the rapid changes that have been taking place in the village since the fall of President Suharto are also described based on my field observation in 1998 and 1999.

This research focuses on swidden cultivation as a livelihood that organically connects food, forests, and local regions. Making the best use of the ecological resources that sleep in the local hilly and mountainous areas, we aim to revitalize agriculture, satoyama-forest, and the local regions by practicing swidden cultivation.
Researchers in several fields such as agriculture, ecology, anthropology, and area studies collaborated and practiced swidden cultivation to restore the traditional techniques and knowledges inherited from swidden cultivation. In addition, we accumulated data on changes in soil fertility after burning, growth of weeds, and fallow vegetation recovery, and conducted scientific verification of traditional knowledge.Utilizing these research results, we presented a regional activation model that creates a virtuous cycle of people, goods, money, and information by slashing and burning of abandoned forests and enhancing regional branding of swidden turnips.

In Southeast Asia, mercury pollution has been occurring due to poverty-driven artisanal and small-scale gold mining, and health risks of the residents have been increasing recently. In this study, environmental and health impact assessments of mercury pollution in Gorontalo province, Indonesia, were conducted. The results of our project were informed to the residents and local governments, and the revitalization of traditional industries were discussed by integrating the "scientific knowledge" of the researchers and the "local knowledge" of the residents. Through the project researches, future scenarios have been co-created to reduce the risk of mercury pollution by sustainable improvement of the poverty problem, and the methodology for creating a sustainable community has been established.

The study aims to evaluate local knowledge on subsistence agriculture from viewpoint of food security and to examine future vision of the knowledge, in 3 study areas which are Sarawak of Malaysia, Northern Thailand, and Central Java of Indonesia.
From the field researches, it is clarified that depopulation and aging have progressed in the study areas as a result of migration from rural to urban areas, under influence of economy globalization. As a result, change of agriculture technique and degradation of village function, such as collaborative work, were observed. Rapid change and disappearance of local knowledge make local food security uncertain. Sustainability of rural villages is examined, referring cases of immigration from urban to rural areas in Japan.

This research aims to establish sustainable crop production system in mountainous areas and rejuvenate abandoned satoyama forests by traditional swidden cultivation, which is environmentally sustainable agriculture in intermediate and mountainous areas of Japan. This study revealed that traditional skills and knowledge inherited from Japanese swidden cultivation have been developed not to maximize crop yield but to minimize the risk from various environmental fluctuation. Results of this study showed that better quality of turnips can be produced by swidden cultivation and burning stimulates the germination of turnips. Vegetation survey in fallow forest suggested that degraded satoyama forest can be rejuvenated by slash-and-burn. From these results, four types of forest-agriculture rotation models were established for the restoration of degraded satoyama forests.

Loss and degradation of tropical rain forests have progressed. A key of the conservation is management of Tropical Satoyama which has been managed by indigenous people living in and around the tropical rain forests. This research aims at relationship between stakeholders of the Tropical Satoyama, in order to examine well governance of the Satoyama. Three main research sites were established in Indonesia and Malaysia. As results of this research, concerning the governance of Tropical Satoyama, importance of linking between inside communities of the Satoyama is pointed out. A key issue in the linking is focusing to" knowledge" of the communities of the inside and outside
