Captive model tests were carried out to capture the hydrodynamic force characteristics on maneuvering for a twin propeller and twin rudder ferry with L/B=6.25, B/d=3.75 and C_b=0.53. Based on the test results, the hydrodynamic force derivatives and coefficients were determined according to the MMG model procedure including an equivalent single rudder model newly proposed. In the equivalent single rudder model, two rudders for port and starboard are treated as a single rudder arranged in centerline of the hull within restriction of the same rudder angle for port and starboard. The equivalent single rudder model can avoid complexity of the existing rudder force model for the twin rudder ship. The hydrodynamic force coefficients with respect to hull, propeller and rudder for the ferry are provided together with hull hydrodynamic force characteristics due to bow thruster operation. These data is useful for maneuvering simulation of a similar ferry.

Dynamic-scale model tests of a ship anchor chain were conducted to investigate the oscillation of the anchor chain in a chain locker during anchoring. In the tests, the pay-out velocity of the chain was kept constant for a range of speeds 1.0m/s to 2.5m/s. The lateral oscillation and the tension of the ascending chain were measured. The statistical analysis of test data was carried out. Then, resonance phenomena of the chain caused by increasing the pay-out velocity are discussed theoretically. In addition, the effect of the chain pipe length and the upper room height of the chain locker are also described for the purpose of reducing the oscillation. As the results, it is found that the pay-out velocity of the anchor chain, the breadth of the chain locker, the chain pipe length and the upper room height of the chain locker affect lateral oscillation of a chain in a chain locker.

Tank tests were carried out using a ship model to capture the low speed maneuvering characteristics with respect to clabbing, pivoting turn and clamshell backing of a ship with VecTwin rudder system. Captive model test was conducted to capture the hydrodynamic force characteristics when the ship speed is zero. Based on the test results, we determined two rudder angle combinations to realize the low speed maneuvering. In free running model tests, we confirmed the clabbing and pivoting turn by combination of starboard rudder angle 105°, port rudder angle -65° and bow thruster operation. The clamshell backing was also confirmed by ±105° for both port and starboard rudder angles. Thus, we found that the ship with VecTwin rudder system has good maneuverability in low speed.

Using a ship model with azimuthing propellers (PODs) which are arranged in parallel at stern part, captive model tests were carried out to investigate the effect of POD strut profile area and the effect of stern fins on the hydrodynamic force characteristics related to ship maneuvering. The subject ship was unstable for course keeping. With increasing the strut area, ship control forces due to POD steering increase and the course stability of the ship was improved. Thus, the strut area is important for the performances of both ship control force and course stability.Stern fins were also useful for improving the course stability. However, effective control forces were reduced about 15% by attaching the stern fins. This is due to decrease of additional lateral force component acting on the hull induced by POD steering. Improvement of the course stability of the subject ship was insufficient by enlarging the strut profile area and attaching the stern fins. Further investigations are needed.

Captive model tests were carried out to capture the hydrodynamic force characteristics of a ship with the azimuthing propellers (hereafter we call the ship Podded ship) which are arranged in parallel at stern part. The measured hydrodynamic force characteristics were compared with those of usual ship model with twin propeller and twin rudder. The Podded ship has better performance with respect to ship control force in case of large azimuthing angle. However, the course stability becomes worse. Comparing push and tractor types of azimuthing propeller, tractor type is superior to performance for both ship control force and course stability. Based on the measured results, a simulation model was developed for hydrodynamic forces related to azimuthing propellers. Using the model, maneuvering simulations were carried out for the Podded ship and usual ship with twin rudder. As a result, it was shown that the Podded ship does not keep to IMO criteria of 10/10 zig-zag maneuvers, even though the usual ship is no problem. It is necessary to pay attention to ensure the course stability in the new development of Podded ships.

To acquire the wind energy of the oceans, a sailing wind farm has been proposed. The wind farm considered is composed of a semisubmersible floating structure, 11 windmills, four sails, six thrusters, and storage for hydrogen. To maximize the acquired energy, an effective algorithm to search for optimum routes was developed. The algorithm is based on the fact that beam winds yield a maximum of acquired energy. This feature reduces the computation time, and, consequently, efficient route optimization becomes possible in a reasonable time. After setting an operational area for the wind farm, navigation simulations for a 1-year period were carried out. A numerical weather forecast was used as well as the responses of the floating structure, such as the speed of the structure, the output power of the windmills, and the time of course changes. In the simulation, the wind farm evades rough seas to avoid structural damage, and an optimum route is searched for. The capacity factor of the system was used to evaluate the efficiency of the optimized routes. From the simulations, the maximum capacity factor achieved was 42.6%. The dependency of the capacity factor on the initial position of the wind farm was also examined. It was shown that offshore from Sanriku in northeastern Japan is an area suited to the operation of the wind farm. The effect of the initial position on consecutive periods of operation is discussed.

Using one year measured wind data and wave hind-cast data, we investigate the statistical property of the wind and waves in the EEZ of Japan and its surrounding area in which we assume VLMOS navigates. It is confirmed that the stochastic distribution of the wind speed and the significant wave height is approximated by the Weibulle distribution. In addition, we perform a navigation simulation of VLMOS in which we used 144h wave forecast data to increase the generated power and not to meet the high sea. Using the simulation results, the stochastic distribution of wave height experienced by VLMOS is discussed. It is found that deformation of the stochastic distribution obtained from the sailing simulation has a relation with its capacity factor and it is quite reasonable. The result of the fatigue assessment shows that VLMOS seems to have enough fatigue strength for twenty year operation even if its capacity factor exceeds 40%. ©2007 MTS.

The structural identification and guest compositions of the mixed CO2 and N-2 hydrates at low temperature conditions were investigated by both theoretical predictions and experimental measurements. From the model calculations, at very low temperatures, the highly CO2-concentrated hydrates over 95 mol % CO2 on the basis of water-free concentration could coexist with the gas mixtures of low CO2 concentrations in equilibrium. X-ray diffraction measurements of the hydrates formed with the gas mixture of 3.16 mol % CO2 and balanced N-2 indicate that the formed hydrates at all conditions considered in this study were identified as structure I, whereas the model predicts a structural transition to structure II around 220 K. However, it was also found that the formed hydrate samples contain a considerable amount of hexagonal ice resulting from incomplete conversion of ice to the hydrates. The compositional analysis suggests that a favorable encaging of CO2 in the mixed hydrate can be obtained by the hydrate formation at low temperatures and relative amount of CO2 molecules in the mixed hydrates increases with a decrease of temperature.

The present paper proposes a Sailing Wind Farm as main energy resource with small load on an environment. It sails around EEZ of Japan seeking appropriate breezing and avoiding meeting heavy storm like Typhoon. This is a concept of main energy resource of Japan to minimize environmental load when fuel cell and hydrogen will be available for daily life. A prototype design shows feasibility of safe sailing even in case of Typhoon and structural strength in storm. If Sailing Wind Farms, 3900 units of the prototype replace coal power plants, then we can obtain 18% of total electric power generation of Japan and reduce 10% of exhausting CO2 of the 2002 level.

The growth and collapse of a bubble under a floating body are studied using the boundary element method. The toroidal bubble dynamics and the translation of floating bodies are taken into consideration. It is shown that when the mass of a floating body is sufficiently heavy, the bubble behavior is similar to that near rigid boundaries: the bubble translates toward the floating body, and the liquid jet threads the bubble surface in the final stage of the collapse. On the other hand, when the mass is moderate, the bubble collapses at the initial position without translation. The heavier the mass of a floating body becomes, the larger the bubble translation toward the body becomes, and thus the higher pressure is induced at the bottom of the body due to the impact of liquid jet. The results also show that the analysis with Kelvin impulse is effective in evaluating the bubble translation under floating bodies.

The result of the previous validation study has shown a significant error especially for the prediction of course stability of an unstable ship. To improve the accuracy of the prediction, it will be required to estimate high accuracy hydrodynamic interaction among ship hull, propeller and rudder as well as hydrodynamic forces acting on a bare hull taking account of the detailed ship form such as stern profile and frame line.<br>This paper describes a study on the application of CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) to ship's manoeuvrability prediction at design stage. A numerical method has been applied to compute flows around a ship with a rudder in several oblique motions. Calculated interaction forces between ship hull and rudder are compared with measured ones. From this study, it is found that this hydrodynamic approach would be useful for prediction of ship manoeuvring motion

When a drilling riser is operated, tension is applied to maintain configuration of the riser and protect it from collapse. In the emergency condition, for example drift off or drive off of drilling vessel, the riser is disconnected at top of the BOP which is placed on the sea floor. When disconnected, the riser starts to lift and recoil, and if the tension is not properly reduced the riser hits the vessel and destroy both the vessel and riser. If the tension is reduced too fast, riser can not reach the vessel and riser drops on to the sea floor and destroyed. An anti-recoil system is necessary to protect the riser and vessel from destruction and make the catching successful.<BR>In this research response prediction system of disconnected riser is developed considering coupled response of riser and dynamic response of internal and external fluid. Vessel heave motion prediction system is also developed. An algorithm is developed to search catching timing from the both predictions of riser motion and vessel heave motion. To achieve successful catching, the catching timing must satisfy catching condition of no relative displacement, velocity and acceleration. Once the catching timing is found, riser disconnection timing is determined from the predicted riser motion. Feedback control is employed at the final stage of catching to adjust and absorb modeling errors and prediction errors and secure successful catching. Effectiveness of the developed algorithm is verified by simulation calculation.

From the viewpoint of marine safety, it is of importance to grasp ship manoeuvring performance, such as berthing in a harbour, drifting behaviour of a disabled ship. For the prediction of ship manoeuvrability with high accuracy, it will be required to estimate the hydrodynamic forces acting on a ship accurately not only in relatively high speed motions with small drift angle but also in low speed motions with large drift angle. So, numerical calculations have been already given to the longitudinal distribution of the cross flow forces over the length of ship at larger drift angles. This theoretical method is on basis of vortex shedding model developed by the authors. The numerical results for a container ship hull in drifting motion agree well with measured results of oblique towing model test. In this paper, the simulation calculations based on the mathematical model are compared with the results of free running model test for typical manoeuvres with tugboats. The hydordynamic forces acting on ship, which are needed for the numerical simulation of manoeuvring motion, are obtained by means of theoretical method. Form these studies, it is found that this approach will be useful for parctical prediction of manoeuvrablily for ship in low speed motions at early design stage. However, there still remain some problems to be solved, such as the effect of yawing motion on hydrofynamic forces acting on ship in large drifting motion, to perdict the manoeuvring performance more accurately.

IMO's interim standard for ship manoeuvrability has accelerated the accurate prediction of ship's maneuverability. To evaluate the applicability of present prediction tool of ship's manoeuvrability at the early design stage, Kijima's prediction model, that is now widely used as a design tool, is adopted for a validation and sensitivity study. It is applied to three ships whose inherent manoeuvrability are different and to SR221 series model whose principal particulars are the same except stern name line. The result of the validation study shows a significant error especially for the prediction of course stability of an unstable ship such as full hull form. From the sensitivity study, it implies that the estimation error of linear hydrodynamic derivatives strongly affects the accuracy of simulation results, and this tendency becomes more apparent for the unstable ship. On the basis of these findings, the authors attempt to improve the prediction tool by making use of the recent research results. Then it is found that the revised method can predict the manoeuvrability more accurately even for an unstable ship.

From the view point of marine safety, it is of importance to evaluate the ship manoeuvring motions, such as the berthing in a harbour, the drifting behaviour of a disabled ship. For the prediction of ship manoeuvrability with high accuracy by numerical simulation, it is required to estimate the accurate hydrodynamic forces acting on ship not only in relatively high speed motions with small drift angle but also in low speed motions with large drift angle. At larger drift angles the flow around the ship's hull will be complicated due to vortex shedding and separation, but it is considered that the manoeuvring characteristics of a ship will be significantly influenced by hydrodynamic forces, initiated by the cross flow underneath a ship from the inflow to the leeside, and cross flow effects become dominant as the ship's drift velocity becomes relatively larger compared to the ahead speed.<br>In this paper, special attention is given to the cross flow around each cross section of a ship during oblique motions with large drift angle, from lateral shifting motion to ahead motion. A distribution of bound vortices and free vortices is used to represent 2-dimensional separated flow around ship's section. The separation points are defined from velocity distributions for non-separated flow. The representation of the latest free vortex shed from a separation point at any incidence is discussed. Numerical results for a container ship hull in drifting motions are presented. By comparing with the measured results of oblique towing model tests at increasing forward speed, the calculated lateral forces and yaw moments acting on a ship agree well with experimental ones. Therefore, this approach will be useful for more accurate prediction of ship's manoeuvrability at low speed.

The manoeuvring characteristics of a ship at very large drift angles will be significantly influenced by non-linear hydrodynamic forces, initiated by the cross flow underneath a ship from the inflow to the leeside. It is considered that the magnitude of cross flow drag is very sensitive to the forms of the local cross-sections of a ship, such as thickness of sections and smoothness of the edge.<BR>This paper dealt with the cross sectional aspect ratio and radius of round edge effects on cross flow drag acting on rectangular cross-sections, which are theoretically investigated by using of vortex model developed by the authors. From the results of numerical calculations, cross flow drag acting on rectangular cross-sections decrease abruptly as increasing corner radius, especially for the sections with a breadth to height ratio becoming larger. Thus, the cross sectional aspect ratio and radius of round edge effects will be important factors for cross flow drag acting on rectangular cross-sections, and therefore these effects should be also considered in evaluating the local cross flow drag of a ship moving at very large drift angles.

It is important to estimate the ship manoeuvring motion at slow speed. However, the manoeuvring characteristics of ship and the hydrodynamic forces acting on ship at slow speed complicate so much, because sway velocity becomes often larger than the forward speed due to the external disturbances such as wind and current. The development of prediction method for ship manoeuvrability at slow speed condition will be expected.<BR>In this paper, as the first step, the cross flow past rectangular cylinder in early stage from the rest condition are studied by vortex shedding model combined panel method, to analyze the characteristics of flow around ship moving transversely, taking into account the Kutta condition.<BR>Furthermore, the flows around some types of rectangular cylinders are calculated to check the validity of this method.<BR>From these studies, the cross flow past rectangular cylinder in the early stage from the rest condition will be affected by aspect ratio of cross section of the cylinder.

In the first report, the effects of water depth, soil conditions of sea bed and length of tow line on the course stability of a cable ship were discussed. By the numerical calculations, it was found that a cable ship was stable as soil of sea bed becoming hard, as increasing length of tow line and as increasing depth of water. In this report, the effects of external disturbances such as wind and current on the course stability of a cable ship are discussed. This cable ship is controlled by rudder to keep her course during laying and burying of the submarine cable by means of a plough, and furthermore is controlled as the function of heading angle, angular velocity of a cable ship and towing angle, which means a horizontal angle between tow line of a plough burying machine and the designed submarine cable route. As the results of numerical calculations, we get the following conclusions. (1) The towing angle is one of the effective parameter to keep her on the designed submarine cable route. (2) It will be very useful to pick this parameter up towards the practical design for automatic track-keeping control system of a cable ship. (3) As the soil conditions of sea bed becoming hard, it will be becoming difficult to control a cable ship by rudder, because the course stability of a ship will be affected by the external disturbances such as wind and current as decreasing ship speed.

A cable ship is required to have the ability to manoeuver for precise track-keeping and position-keeping for laying the underwater cable. Especially, a cable ship has to work with the utmost care for laying an optical fiber cable be in great demand recentry. One of the most important parameter in these manoeuvre is the course stability of a cable ship including the relationship between ship and cable system. This paper discusses on the effects of water depth, length of cable and condition of sea bottom on the course stability of a cable ship by the numerical calculations as the first report. As the results of calculations, we get the following conclusions. (1) There are the stable and unstable zones on course stability of a cable ship as function of water depth and length of cable. (2) In general, a cable ship becomes stable as increasing depth of water if the ratio of length of cable and water depth is constant. (3) As the soil of sea bottom becoming hard, a cable ship will be stable. (4) On the effect of length of cable, the ship is becoming stable as increasing cable length, but in the region of much more longer cable the ship becomes unstable. As the above conclusions, it will need to consider the effects of water depth, cable length and nature of soil of sea bottom for control of a cable ship.

On bow thruster performance, only the effect of forward speed has been mostly investigated in the past. However, the effect of shallow water will be considered as the very important factor for the performance, because the bow thruster is generally used in shallow water such as harbour, bay or canal. This paper dealt with shallow water and forward speed effects on bow thruster performance, which are investigated by theoretical method developed by one of the authors and also by the experiment used a model ship of 3.0m length. From the results of numerical calculations and the experiment, both lateral force and yawing moment acting on ship induced by the bow thruster decrease abruptly as increasing forward speed in shallow water. For example, the lateral force at forward speed 1.4kt in full scale ship and water depth/draft ratio H/d=1.2 (H: depth, d: draft) will be 30% decreasing than that in H/d=6.0 which is able to consider to be deep water. Furthermore, in the turning motion of ship used only bow thruster at it's forward speed in this shallow water condition (H/d=1.2) the angular velocity decreases about 50% than that in deep water by simulation study. Thus, the shallow water effect is significant factor for bow thruster performance, and therefore this effect should be also considered at the design stage.

Oil tankers carrying high viscous oil are usually equipped with the cargo-oil heating system. For design of oil heating system, three dimensional numerical analysis of unsteady flow and heat transfer was conducted to grasp the influence of heat loss from cargo-oil tank on natural heat convection in rectangular cargo-oil tank during heating up as fundamental study. From the numerical analysis, typical flow pattern and distribution of oil temperature in oil tank when heated were obtained. Additionally, the relations between the minimum oil temperatures in tank and the overall heat transfer coefficient for walls were discussed.

This paper describes residual hydrate dissociation in a storage tank by heat conduction simulation. The suitable hydrate storage tank is necessary in the project which is supply the fuel gas by marine transport of natural gas hydrate. The amount of hydrate in the tank will change on demand. Two dimensional heat equation was solved using an implicit finite difference method namely the Crank-Nicolson scheme and Gauss-Seidel iteration technique. Temperature and hydrate volume fraction in a tank are calculated. The results of simulation indicated that the volume fraction of hydrate dissociation increases gradually with the heat-receiving surface.

A non-linear time-domain simulation method was developed for predicting maneuvering motions of ships in adverse weather conditions, and validated through the comparison with tank model test results. Obtaining an equilibrium of the ship in adverse weather conditions and linearizing the motion equations of the ship at the equilibrium, a new theoretical method was developed for judgement of course-keeping ability of ships. By means of the developed two calculation tools, the time-domain maneuvering simulation method and the theoretical method for course-keeping ability, the maneuvering motions and oscillations in waves were predicted for various kinds of ships with changing the external disturbance condition and the engine output. Based on the prediction results, the external disturbance conditions where the safe navigation is possible, and the effect of the engine output were presented in detail.

A new computer code was developed for the prediction of the motions of tow and towed ships and the towing cable tension in oblique regular waves, by extending the code developed in last year. To obtain the validation data for the code, tank tests were conducted at Seakeeping and Maneuvering Basin, Nagasaki R & D center, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries. By systematic change of the wave-maker's parameters, in the measurements, effects of wave period, wave direction and so on were captured. By means of the code newly developed, calculations were made of the motions of tow and towed ships and the towing cable tension in oblique waves, and the results were compared with the tank test results. As a result, it was confirmed that the calculation results roughly agreed with the tank test results. The present method is useful for practical prediction purposes of towing problems in waves.

It will be very important ot estimate the hydrodynamic force acting on a ship for predicting ship manoeuvring characteristics by using mathematical model. This hydrodynamic force depends on especially the ship's form then it needs to estimate the hydrodynamic force acting on ship considering sufficiently with ship's form such as the frame line with high accuracy.
On the hydrodynamic force, we estimated by using the slender body theory, and examined the flow pattern and generation point of free vortex. According to the investigated results, we can estimate the hydrodynamic force acting on a ship by considering with the generation point of free vortex. This generation point of the vortex should be decided as function of the hull form.
Furthermore, this research investigated the cross sectional aspect of round edge effects on cross flow drag acting on rectangular cross section, which are theoretically investigated using of vortex model. From the results of numerical calculations, cross flow drag acting on rectangular cross section decrease abruptly as increasing corner radius, especially for the sections with a breadth to height ratio becoming larger.

A cable ship is required to have the ability to maneuver for precise track-keeping for laying the submarine cable. Especially, she has to work with the utmost care for laying an optical fiber cable be in great demand recently: This research deals with an automatic track-keeping control system of a cable ship during laying and burying of the submarine cable by means of a plow burying machine under external disturbances such as wind and current, developed by the optimal regulator theory. In order to find the effective and practical parameters for track-keeping control, the course stability analysis is examined. Furthermore the maneuvering characteristics of a cable ship are discussed by simulation study on the view point of track-keeping control.
The major concluding remarks can be summarized as follows.
(1)It will be very useful to pick not only the heading angle but also the towing angle up towards the practical design for an automatic track-keeping control system of a cable ship.
(2)A cable ship will be stable as the soil of sea bed becoming hard, and also will become stable as increasing depth of water, that is, as increasing length of tow line of a plow.
(3)But under external disturbances such as wind and current, as soil of sea bed becoming hard, it will be becoming difficult to control a cable ship, because the course stability of a cable ship will be affected by the disturbances as decreasing ship speed.
(4)The algorithm of an optimal regulator theory will be effective for track-keeping of a cable ship.
These approach will be useful for the design of automatic track-keeping control system of a cable ship.
