A variety of past experiences influence our thoughts and behaviors, and this premise also applies to adult second language (L2) and foreign language (FL) learning above and beyond child first language acquisition, since toddlers can internalize their mother tongue largely unconsciously with the language faculty of mental organizations while adults consciously study linguistic features such as vocabulary, pronunciation, and grammar and much think of non-linguistic matters as their goals and motives, worries and anxiety, beliefs about how one should study, and strategies for learning the target language effectively. My work in English teaching methodology focuses on affective and cognitive factors in language learning. Examples of those foctors are motivation, goal orientations, beliefs, anxiety, and strategy. The roles and interactions of those factors are discussed in my lab.

    Previous L2 reading research has centered on comprehension process, strategy use, and reading proficiency (i.e., cognitive aspects of L2 reading), not including learner motivation and learner beliefs in the EFL context. In addition, the majority of L2 reading research has lacked the perspective of development in multiple individual difference factors, leaving ample room for research. For these reasons, the objective of this study was to explore the development of individual difference profiles in L2 reading (i.e., salient features consisting of strategy use, motivation, general learner beliefs, and proficiency) in the process of strategy intervention. Questionnaires for strategy use, motivation, and general learner beliefs and proficiency tests were administered to Japanese EFL university students, and a series of intergroup and intragroup comparisons were made for the purpose of this study. The results indicate the possibility that L2 readers' individual difference profiles influence the subsequent development and interaction of individual difference factors to varying degrees, providing resourceful implications in L2 reading classrooms.     The present study proposes a tripartite model of L2 reading strategy use, reading motivations, and general learner beliefs by examining the relationships among them in an L2 context. Reading strategy instruction was performed for 360 first-year university students enrolled in a reading-based course, in expectation of affecting their motivations and beliefs in the process. A tripartite model consisting of the three constructs was examined by structural equation modeling (SEM). The results showed strong multiple correlations between these three variables. Furthermore, ample evidence was provided to validate this model: (1) the interdependence across the constructs demonstrated from the developmental perspective, (2) the model's multiple correlations confirmed at the level of individual correlations, and (3) the interrelationship between the constructs corroborated by the cross predictability in multiple regressions. The tripartite model suggests that the interdependence is a promising resource for comprehension development in the L2 reading context, and that main idea strategy plays a vital role in the process of learning to read.     This paper reports on how students' four skills of learning English as a Foreign Language (i.e., reading, writing, listening, and speaking) are integrated by examining the objective indexes (e.g., TOEIC/TOEIC SW scores) of them, and conducting open-ended questionnaires and follow-up interviews with them. The participants were students of Ehime University, who belong to a minor course called "English Professional Training Program", and the results showed that the participants consciously try to maintain a balance among the four different skills in proficiency (e.g., using preferred strategies and having more favorable attitudes toward learning English).

    This paper is a practical report on the introduction of e-learning via ALC NetAcademy2 to several courses of English in the framework of Ehime University's in-house GP (good practice) program. After the pilot study, a questionnaire was administered and analyzed. The results indicate that the inclusion of e-learning contributed to the enhancement of (1) English proficiency, particularly listening and vocabulary, and (2) the autonomous learning of English by increasing learning hours.

    The purpose of this study was to investigate language learners' beliefs in both EFL (English as a foreign language) learning situation and JSL (Japanese as a second language) learning situation in terms of gender differences. The participants were 316 Japanese students who study EFL at a Japanese university and 109 Chinese Ryugakusei (international students) who study JSL at an intensive language school in Japan. For measuring instrument, BALLI (Horwitz, 1987) was used to investigate their beliefs about language learning. As a result, seven out of twenty-nine items showed statistical significance between male and female among EFL learners while eight out of twenty-nine items showed statistical significance between males and females among JSL learners.

    The purpose of the current study was to examine and develop a curriculum and practice in which a variety of students, mainly students with developmental disabilities, can participate in foreign language education classes in elementary schools. Through class activity analysis and a survey of classroom teachers and specialized teachers, the researchers analyzed the stumbling points that students experience when learning a foreign language. As a result of the analysis, in addition to the four skills of "listening," "reading," "speaking," and "writing," relatively "complex factors" related to stumbling and special educational considerations related to the mother tongue. From the stumbling blocks common to many students to the stumbling blocks that are highly individualized, we have organized them step by step. Curriculum development proposed a guidance strategy for these stumbling points.

    To evaluate not only how well the students understood the target activities but also their performance in class, we created an assessment rubric on the subject “Foreign Language Activities.” It consists of four items on speaking and communication activities, and each item has three different descriptors according to three levels: foundation, developing, and advanced. Descriptors are a kind of scoring guide used to evaluate the quality of students' constructed performance. Students can prepare and participate in the activities by using this rubric because it clearly provides them with a visual, cognitive map and learning tool for them to understand what they are required to do in the class. We can use this rubric not only as a scoring guide for teachers but also as a learning guide for students.

    This study reports on three classes of foreign language activities conducted in special needs education in Japan by describing how students enjoy the activities in English as a foreign language and suggests the following: First, even though students have developmental disorders, teachers can facilitate students learning by installing ICT devices which enable them to make attractive materials for students, and by introducing SST in class, they also help students concentrate on the content. Second, a lack of research studies might not only lead to insufficient support for teachers, but also cause some misgivings about the legitimacy of conducting foreign languages activities in special needs education in Japan.

    In this study, we investigated the relationships among strategy use, motivation, and general learner beliefs in L2 reading by implementing teaching practices including a strategy intervention. The results indicated that there are significant relationships among strategy use, motivation, and general learner beliefs in L2 reading, and that strategy intervention can have a positive influence on motivation and beliefs as well as on reading proficiency. It was also shown that the development and interaction of these individual difference factors differ among L2 readers according to their individual difference profiles.

    Through the interviews and the self-report questionnaire to the participants and their teachers, it was found that affective factors of students in elementary schools toward English activities can be determined by the relationships with their friends in class, the contents, and their personality traits.

    研究最終年度となった平成19年度は,研究初年度及び次年度に収集したデータに統計分析を施し(一部は既に分析済み),さらにその結果を公表する目的で,海外及び国内にて研究発表を行った。さらに,最終年度後半には,これまでの3ヵ年の研究成果の総括する目的で,研究成果報告書を作成した。
    本研究課題の中心テーマであった学習観とその周辺要因を含めた潜在変数モデルは一定の水準で収集したデータと適合し,学習動機要因と学習方略要因の間に学習観を介在させることにより,目的変数である学習方略要因の予測の精度が上がることが示された。このことは,学習観に対する教育的介入という操作によって,学習方略を変容させることができることを示唆している。
    過去経験(本研究で扱った変数は「小学校英語教育経験」と「大学入学以前の海外滞在経験」の2つ)が,どの程度その後の学習観や学習行動に影響を及ぼしているのかという観点でカテゴリカル回帰分析を行った。結果,本研究の調査参加者に関する限り,大学入学以前の海外滞在経験のみが学習観と学習方略に有意な影響を及ぼしていることがわかった。
    本研究結果に関する限り,小学校において英語教育を受けたとしても,そのこと自体では,数年後,どのように大学で英語を学ぶかという行動の予測はできないことを考えると,海外留学など実際に英語を日常生活で使用しなければならないという切迫感や必要性というこれまでも議論されてきた根本的な英語教育の問題が,学習者の英語学習行動を理解し,かつ効果的に教育を行う上で重要な課題であることが改めて確認されたといえる。
