This research focused on recent studies of assemblies in order to reexamine the structure of the society of Anglo-Saxon England from the viewpoint of the human network. As a result, it is confirmed not only that the bond between the royal assembly in the late state and local assemblies was important but also that interpersonal bonds among individuals played a vital role. At the same time, it is argued that the previous 'top-down' explanation is insufficient to describe the relationship between local communities and the royal authority and that it requires explanation in terms of 'consensual rulership' that was realized through persuasion, negotiation and so on. On the basis of the literature review above, this study pointed out the possibility that the multi-dimensional social structure in which not only the royal authority, the elite and kinship but also the lordship and local societies were intertwined can be grasped by reproducing personal relationships that obtained in assemblies.

This project research presented as the main aim the examination of current research trends in Diplomatics, Study of Documents, in Medieval Europe. On this occasion, attentions were paid particularly to an extension of the research problematic and a comparative viewpoint. Several meetings and colloquium were regularly held, and the results of the project were published every year in the form of the annual report.

As a result of reexamining charters with achievements of archeological investigation taken into consideration, I clarified the formation of the economic network linking the city of Worcester and surrounding rural villages, which was accompanied by the urban development from the 10th century onward. At the same time, it has turned out, through examinations of chirographs that began to emerge in the 9th century, that human ties mediated by friendship, regional bonds etc. played important social roles. On the basis of these studies, I proposed that the Anglo-Saxon society should be considered in terms of the notion "local network" that involves dynamic human relations and exchanges of goods. This view stands in sharp contrast to but complements the prevailing view of the early medieval period where it is characterized only as the formative period of the feudalism and the manorial system.

This project research presented as the main aim the analysis of the research trend of the historical materials arguments, which are proposed in recent years about the Western Europe medieval history, traditionally a privileged area of studies on the historical materials. On this occasion, I paid attention particularly to deepening the examination of the problems by a comparative viewpoint through the interchange with the researchers who specialize in the different territories, Japanese modern history, Oriental history, and so on.
Main results of the project are as the following:
1. I developed many research activities in cooperation with the various academic societies and organizations, and careful considerations were given to discuss the problems with many guest speakers, researchers of others areas. I contributed in this way to deepening arguments about the subject with paying attention in the interdisciplinary point of view.
2. I organized many seminars, which examined principally a research trend of this subject. A part of that result was presented as research trend thesis and a bibliography in the 2007/2008 Annual Reports of the research project.
3. The results were presented by the cases in the academic journal and the academic meeting, society report and so on. And, I published every year the Annuals Reports, which run result records of meetings and seminars held in that year Each Annual Report will be presented to the public on WEB soon.

本研究は,アングロ・サクソン期農村社会の展開を,ウスター司教座所領を対象として長期的視点から追究するものである。科研費交付最終年度の本年は,今後の研究進展を目指して,以下二点から検討を進めた。
1.都市=農村関係の解明
歴代司教の所領政策に関する検討を,今年度は都市=農村関係の視点から行った(本年度当初の目標達成に不可欠と判断したため)。まず,司教座都市ウスターに関する近年の発掘成果を,イギリスに赴いて収集した。これら考古学的知見を,研究代表者が文字史料の検討から得てきた見解と突き合わせた結果,10世紀以降司教によってウスターが整備されていったこと(防壁拡大,空間再配置,市場地創設・改良),これに伴って住民が増加したこと(教区教会の複数創設),こうした都市的成長を背景に,司教座は,多様な奉仕を見返りにして,都市=農村リンク型の所領譲与を行ったことが明らかとなった。ここからは,当該期の司教座による所領経営政策転換(直接経営縮小と積極的運営)に,地域での活発な流通が関わっていた可能性を指摘できると同時に,この時期の頻繁な譲与で形成された「自給自足的」な小所領が荘園制成立を導いたという従来の説に,再検討を要請することができる(6月に学会発表の予定)。
2.史料論に関する研究動向の整理
史料分析に新たな視角を導入するため,近年盛んな史料論的立場からの研究に注目した。「史料学」で真正と判断された史料情報を重視してきた従来の歴史学に対し,近年では,偽文書を含めた多様な史料を,当時の歴史的文脈に位置づけて理解する試みが盛んである。この動向は,検討対象となる史料の幅を広げると共に,従来とは異なる次元での史料の読解を可能にする。伝来史料の限られた中世初期に関しては,この「史料論」研究の持つ可能性はとりわけ大きい。そこで本年度は日本学界の動向を整理し,その成果と課題を指摘した。昨秋に九州大学で報告したこの内容は,「日本学界におけるイギリス中世史料論研究の動向」として,『愛媛大学教育学部紀要』に発表予定である。
