The principal objective of this study is to reconsider the syntactic and semantic properties of the notions of "possession" and "location", which has been assumed to be overlapped with each other, and to clearly show that these two notions consist a continuous phenomenon. By focusing upon the grammatical issues such as Experiencer subjects, eventive nouns, valence-increasing alternations and subject-predicate relationship of possession sentences in Japanese, English, German and Swahili and other Bantu languages, we have clarified the various conditions on possession constructions in these languages.
Based upon our cross-linguistic approach, we have shed light upon the continuity of the notions of "possession" and "location" and shown that the syntactic-pragmatic properties “possession” constructions in human languages are adequately predicted and explained by assuming the function HAVE which specifies the relationship between individual and event, i.e., possession of events.

The principal aim of this study is to explore and reconsider the syntactic and semantic issues of the notions of "possession" and "location", which has been regarded as closely connected to each other. Specifically, by focusing upon grammatical phenomena such as internal structures of noun phrases, valence-increasing alternations, and realization of topic in sentences in Japanese, English and German, we have critically and carefully reconsidered the previous studies regarding the notions of "possession" and "location" overlapped with each other. Instead, based upon our cross-linguistic approach, we have clarified that these two notions are ontologically different, and that the close relationship between these two notions are adequately predicted and explained through the syntactic-pragmatic analysis of predicates by assuming the function HAVE which specifies the relationship between individual and event.

Japanese, English and German have morphological and syntactic properties "partially" in common; while Japanese and German have SOV-type word order, where accusative and dative cases are marked distinctively, English has SVO-type word order, and does not have such a distinction in case marking. On the other hand, subjects must be realized overtly in English and German, while subjects need not be realized overtly in Japanese. Through the comparative studies of these three languages, we have suggested that a range of grammatical phenomena, which have been mainly regarded as language-specific properties so far, can be analyzed and formalized uniformly under the notion of "Valence Expansion". Also we have clarified that the semantic notion of "Possession of Event" typically triggers valence expansion in these languages, where the ways of argument realization are determined chiefly in accordance with the agreement morphology and aspectual properties in the lexical representation of verbs.

This project has closely observed a range of grammatical phenomena, which have been analyzed as idiosyncratic ones due to their seemingly irregular way of case-marking, and tried to find out and formalize the underlying rules which seem to govern their peculiar case-marking system. Based upon our descriptive works on causative/passive have in English, a group of Japanese verbs taking Patient subjects," free dative" phenomena in German, we have proposed the novel semantic function POSS, which formalizes the relationship between Individual and Event on the lexical semantic representation of verbs. Also, we have shown that our analysis based upon the function POSS gives further insights into case-marking of individuals which are involved in the event, and non-thematic individuals which are regarded as existing outside of the event, and indirectly affected by the event in various ways.
