    <p>This paper studies a local intellectual of the late Qing Dynasty China, who actively participated in the School Song Movement. The School Song Movement, which existed between the late years of Qing Dynasty and the early years of the Republic of China, sought to teach children school songs and hold music seminars in order to popularize music education. Since most people who participated in the movement had been overseas students in Japan, prior research on the movement primarily focused on their thoughts about education and the composition of songs. However, prior research did not sufficiently address the role that local intellectuals without overseas experience who also participated in the movement. This study focuses upon Jiang Weiqiao, an intellectual with no overseas learning experience, who held a music seminar in Chang Zhou. Based upon the analyses of his activities during the movement and a re-examination of the whole movement, this paper proves the following. First, most intellectuals who participated in the School Song Movement were not music professionals. Second, seminars given by both those who studied in Japan and local intellectuals primarily focused on the popularization of music education, rather than professional music training. Third, in regions where music education had not existed, local intellectuals' promotion of nationalism through music education played an important role in making the idea of music education much more popular.</p>

    Ministry of Education changed the subject Classical Chinese to Vernacular Chinese in January of 1920. It represents the impermanent surpass of Classical Chinese over Vernacular Chinese. However, since 1924, anti-Vernacular Chinese force commenced an advocation for Classical Chinese Education. How and why did this reversal happen? This essay focuses on the Vernacular Chinese education consciousness of Classical Chinese related educators at that time, and investigates inherent causes of this retro trend by analyzing the ideological basis of establishing the subject Vernacular Chinese. Academic resources include articles republished in The Education Magazine and The Chung Hua Educational Review during 1912 to 1919, when Vernacular Chinese subject had not yet been established. This is to analyze the reception of Vernacular Chinese Education in educational circles, in particular, the Classical Chinese teachers through finding the opinions reflected in these two magazines. The essay concludes that the educators have already had an understanding about the importance of Vernacular Chinese teaching in the Classical Chinese subject and they had accumulated teaching experience which benefitted from Japanese Education. On the contrary, the proposition of changing the subject Classical Chinese to Vernacular Chinese, there was divide between the teachers. Therefore, they did not show much high consciousness in Vernacular Chinese Education. This explains that the idea that the establishment of Vernacular Chinese as a subject was not solid. This among other reasons, explains why the retro trend afterwards rose up.

    <p>There are several theories that explain that the Chinese idea of the national language education system originated Japan. The Kuimao Educational System was made the official language education system in China in 1904. However, the official language education system did not any real progress after several years of effort. This thesis investigates and offers a possible explanation for this lack of progress, with three aspects; the scholars involved in the Qieyin movement, the educators, and the educational policymakers. The idea of a national language education system in China prior to the introduction of the Kuimao Educational System, but few people had any deep understanding about its concept. This resulted in several disagreements among the scholars, educators and the policymakers. Thus, the construction of a new national language did not receive any support. This is the main reason why the national language education system did not have demonstrate progress before the development of the Republic of China.</p>
